Adrien
It had been five long years since that night he had found Marinette sobbing on that rooftop. Five long years since they had graduated. Five long years since the night he had almost died, and hawkmoth had been taken into custody. Five long years, that had been the best years of his life. And now? Now he was in a full blown panic attack.
"Alya are you sure you can do this?"
He asked, running his hand through his hair for the millionth time that day.
"Jesus Adrien. All you asked me to do was video it. I can assure you, I'm plenty capable."
He nodded, pacing back and forth. They were standing on the Eiffel tower, waiting on Marinette.
"You won't start recording until we change back."
"I know Adrien. You've told me this six times. Take a deep breath. It's going to be fine."
She insisted, and he whimpered slightly. How was this so hard?
"Give him a break Alya. I was a nervous wreck when I asked you."
Nino piped up, patting Chat on the shoulder. They had admitted everything to Nino and Alya before they left for America, since Gabriel was rotting in a jail cell. They were supposed to be going on patrol tonight, and as usual, Marinette was late.
"I can't breathe."
"Yes you can. She's going to say yes."
Nino encouraged him, and Chat sighed, trying to get his heart to slow. He had everything in order. The ring, oh god, did he have the ring?
"I lost the ring."
He blurted, patting his suits in a blind panic.
"Adrien. Stop it. You gave me the ring."
Nino snapped, and Adrien sighed in relief. He had already asked her dad for permission, was it too late to back out? God, why was he so nervous? He talked about marrying her all the time. A chime on his baton sounded, an alarm that Marinette had transformed. His stomach flipped, and he thought for sure he was going to be sick. What if she said no?
"I can't do this!"
"Yes. You can. Take a deep breath. You love her, don't you?"
Adrien nodded, wiping the sweat off of his face. He was going to have a heart attack.
"Then nothing will stop you. Here, go get in position."
Nino handed him the ring box, and Adrien stumbled to the edge of the Eiffel tower, taking deep breaths. Glancing back at the two, he could barely see them in the darkness. He had to pull himself together. Alya was going to record this. He didn't want anyone to see him acting like a panicked idiot. He held the engagement ring box in his fist, glancing out over the night sky. He was a man. He needed to man up.
"Hey kitty."
Ladybug landed with a thud next to him, and for a second he thought he saw god. She was going to kill him.
"Sorry, didn't mean to make you jump. You ready?"
"M-mu-Mari!"
He snapped, glaring at nothing in particular. Why the hell was he suddenly stuttering?
"Uh... yeah?"
"Can we t-talk, without the mu-masks for a second?"
He hated himself. He couldn't even get this right. What kind of husband was he going to be?
"What if someone sees?"
"No one will see. Please?"
He almost fist-pumped the air, for getting through that measly sentence without stuttering. She frowned at him slightly, before sighing.
"Tiki, spots off. Is everything okay Adrien?"
She seemed worried, and he offered her a soft smile. She was wearing a white sweater and black leggings, not what she had been wearing when he left the house. Why had she changed? Had Alya tipped her off? What if she knew already?
"Chatton? Are you okay? You look a little pale."
He forced a chuckle, closing his eyes.
"Plagg, claws in."
He had worn a white button up, with black slacks. She eyed him up and down for a moment, before he slowly lowered to one knee, producing the ring box from behind his back.
If you stutter through this no one will ever let you forget it.
"Marinette Dupain Cheng, milady, my partner, my best friend. Will you marry me?"
He asked, opening the box. He had gone for a modest ring, because he knew that was what she liked. She glanced from him to the ring and then back again, before giggling.
Um, what?
He watched in embarrassed horror, and she grabbed at her stomach, bursting with laughter. Worst fears confirmed. She thought he was hilarious.
"Uh..."
He glanced into the darkness with a panicked expression, not seeing Alya or Nino. He wanted god to strike him with lightning. Just kill him, because this was too embarrassing. Marinette knelt in front of him, laughing softer as she wiped the tears from her eyes. He stared at her in shock, never in his life had he believed that she would die of laughter at his proposal. Who did that?
"It uh... it wasn't a joke Mari."
She sobered up pretty quickly, wiping away the remaining tears, though she still wore a grin.
"I know Adrien. It's just funny."
Ouch. Appreciate that, considering I've been stressing over this for weeks.
"How?"
"Your timing kitty. Your timing is impeccable."
She giggled, and he stared at her dumbfounded. What the hell was she talking about?
"I don't get it."
"I was late."
"To your own proposal, yeah, I mean it's a little funny, but not enough to be crying laughing."
He mumbled, earning another giggle from her. How was that funny to her?
"No honey. I was late, because I was taking a test. I'm pregnant."
He heard the words leave her lips, but everything else seemed to fade out. Had he heard her correctly? Pregnant?
"You're pregnant? With... with like a baby?"
He whispered the last part, and she threw her head back in laughter.
"Yes! A baby, a human baby."
He was gonna be a dad? His heart started pounding again, and she stood up, pulling him with her.
"You're serious? We're having a baby?"
She grinned, nodding. He almost dropped the box, and she quickly caught it before it tumbled over the edge.
"And to answer your other question, of course I'll marry you."
He grinned, laughter bubbling in his chest and spilling out as he wrapped his arms around her.
"I'm getting married! And I'm gonna be a dad!"
He shouted, picking her up and spinning her around. She laughed loudly, and he slowly stopped, pulling her back down for a kiss. This was perfect. A wife and a baby all on the same night. How could he have gotten this lucky? He pulled away, quickly taking the box and slipping the ring on her finger.
"I love you M'lady."
"I love you too, kitty."
The sound of muffled grunting pulled them away from their touching moment, and they both followed the noise. There in the darkness, sitting on the platform was Nino and Alya. Nino had his leg thrown over her lap, sitting behind her with his hand clamped tightly over her mouth.
"Hey guys. Got most of it, she kinda lost it at the whole baby thing so I had to improvise."
Nino admitted, finally releasing Alya. She shot up, squealing loudly as she hugged Marinette.
"I'm gonna be an aunt?!"
She shrieked, and Marinette laughed, hugging her back. Nino was up a few seconds after, hugging Adrien.
"Congratulations you two. I'm happy for you man."
Adrien could see tears in Nino's eyes, and he wanted to cry too. He had been blessed so much in one single moment more than he had his entire life. Everyone released each other, and stood in a circle, grinning at one another. He was glad he had asked Alya to record it.
"Well, now we dont have to figure out a way to tell your parents. We can just show them the video."
Adrien chuckled, looking over at Marinette. A chorus of laughter erupted from the group, and he pulled Marinette in closer, his hand instinctively touching her stomach. He didn't know what else to say, so he said it again. Something he would repeat for the rest of his life, something he would say over and over again.
"I love you so much."
"I love you too, my knight in shining leather."
Kinda short, but it was just a thought I wanted to throw out there.
