âAdrien! At last, youâre back!â Nina gleams with happiness.
âHi, Nina. I got back yesterday,â I smile back.
âI really need your help,â she takes hold of my arm.
âWhatâs wrong?â I realize that sheâs more relieved that Iâm back than sheâs happy.
âItâs Kai,â her tone drops.
âDid something happen between you two?â the insecurity on her face worries me.
âWell, no...and yes. Ever since weâve been back from our visit to meet my parents heâs been acting really strange.â
âWhat do you mean?â Iâm shocked to hear this. Heâs always been so tied around her finger and anything different seems just too impossible to happen.
âHeâs been growing distant. Heâs so quiet, so distracted lately. Sometimes it feels like heâs trying to hide something from me.â
âWhat?âI canât believe what Iâm hearing.
âDo you think that...well, maybe,â sheâs tip-toeing, but I can tell what torturous thoughts are haunting her? âDo you think that thereâs someone else? Maybe heâs trying to figure out how to break up with me?â
âLet me talk to him,â I place my hands on her shoulders and stop this whirlpool around her head from getting stronger.
"Thank you," she holds on to hope.
Fucking Kai! How can you be such a jerk to someone like Nina!
We do take many classes together, but itâs hardly the time to confront him. Itâs not until the end of the day that am I allowed to catch up with him. So I set up my trap in one of the hallways where he likes to take the long way back to the dorms. This interrogation has his name written all over it.
âKai,â I stand in his way and look down at him. With my arms crossed, my index finger taps against the sleeve of my shirt.
âAdrien,â he raises an eyebrow, completely clueless.
âI donât have the time to beat around the bush. I have a thesis to edit, so Iâm going to get right to the point.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âWhy are you being a jerk to Nina?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou want to play stupid with me, now? I love you Kai, but Nina is my friend too. Donât think that all those years of our friendship are of any advantage to you.â
âHow am I being a jerk to Nina?â
This is getting nowhere.
âOkay, I don't want to do this, but like I said I have a thesis to get to tonight,â the many folders fall out of his hands as I take him into a chokehold.
âAdrien, quit fucking around!â He laughs, trying to break free.
âNot until you tell me why youâre avoiding Nina,â next, I give him a wet willy.
âAgh! Gross!â he shivers, trying to brush it off.
âNina says, youâve been really distant from her since you met her parents,â going into extremes Iâm about to lick his cheek.
âAlright! Alright! I was going to tell you later on, but I didnât realize that this decision will turn me into such a dick.â
I donât let up and wait for him to spill the beans.
âIâve been distant because Iâve been shopping for a ring for her.â
Wow, hold up a minute! What? There's only one reason I'm aware of why someone would secretly buy a ring for their love interest.
I let go, âYou mean?â
âYeah, ring. An engagement ring,â Kai rubs his neck, both from the physical discomfort and the embarrassment I caused.
âI wouldnât even let her come into my room anymore because I'm afraid that she might discover it. There arenât a lot of hiding options in the dorm rooms, you know.â
The biggest smile spreads across my face. I take a hold of him again, but this time to give the hardest pats on his back.
âCongratulations!â
âAdrien, she hasnât given me an answer. I havenât even asked her yet,â he laughs at my premature celebration.
âStill, this is great.â
âOther than that Iâm making Nina feel bad. I wonder if you can do me a favor to help me and her both?â
âWhatever you need. Do you want me to coordinate a swan dance for your proposal? Drop down with a parachute and perform the ceremony myself?â
âNo,â he laughs. âCan you safe keep the ring for me?â
âOf course,â how can I not?
âIt will take a lot of pressure off me,â out of his book bag, he pulls a little black box.
âIâll guard this with my life,â happily, I accept this honorable task.
