Chapter 7 At the hospital, Callum rushed in carrying Sophie, Mila trailing behind.
The doctor examined Sophieâs wounds with a smirk. âA few more minutes and these would ne healed on their own.â
Sophie playfully punched Callumâs arm. âI told you it wasnât serious. Now we look silly âYour husbandâs concern is natural,â the doctor remarked.
The word husbandâ made Callum pause. At the amusement park, he hadnât corrected similar assumptions because Mila enjoyed it. But he knew who his real wife was.
âDoctor, you misunderstand. Weâre just friends,â he stated firmly.
The doctorâs smile froze. Their intimate behavior suggested otherwiseâif they werenât married, this could only mean one thing.
âHow nice of you to carry your âfriendâ to the hospital,â the doctorâs tone turned cold. âDoes your wife know?â
âWhy would that matter?â Callum asked, genuinely puzzled.
The doctor, a devoted husband himself, felt disgusted. âYou think itâs appropriate to carry another woman while married?â
âWhatâs wrong with that?â Mila piped up.
âOf course youâd defend your mother, but-â
âSheâs not my mother,â Mila interrupted.
The doctor stared incredulously. âThen why are you defending her?â
âMy momâs just jealous and mean to Aunt Sophie. Iâm standing up for whatâs right!â Mila declared proudly.
The doctor looked between the three of them, piecing together the story. âIs your mother really Chapter jealous, or are you and your father just heartless? Supporting another woman like this... if I had a child who betrayed me this way, I couldnât sleep at night.â
Sophie looked hurt, ready to defend herself, but the doctor wasnât interested.
Callum felt defensive. Sure, heâd once had feelings for Sophie, but heâd never betrayed Aria just occasional dinners and movies, things theyâd done since childhood. Mila loved Sophie too. Heâd always maintained appropriate boundaries.
âThereâs nothing between us,â Callum insisted. âMy wife wouldnât mind. Youâre overstepping.â
The doctor laughed bitterly. âIf itâs nothing, then I hope youâll feel the same when your wife gets this close with another man.â
The thought hit Callum like a punch to the gut â Aria, spending time with another man, sharing meals and movies...
For the first time, he glimpsed how his actions might look through her eyes. Had he been wrong all along?
Suddenly, he desperately wanted to rush home, hold his wife, and promise never to betray her trust.
But he didnât understand that such sudden urges for confession often stemmed from guilt.
When Aria didnât answer his calls, panic set in. He grabbed Mila, ready to leave.
âYouâre leaving me?â Sophieâs voice quivered.
Callum hesitated, looking at the girl heâd once loved â still so vulnerable, still able to move him with her tears.
He decided to indulge just one last time. After this, heâd be the perfect husband.
Yes, just this once.
