âHey Iâm Stephen,â the boy with light brown hair offered his hand to me.
I placed my hand in his firm grip and felt the warmth of his skin under my own. Instantly the thought of Landonâs hand on my skin made my stomach do back flips. Was he here?
Realizing that Stephen might think Iâm a little weird since I hadnât really replied, I gave him a warm smile. âNice to meet you Iâm Mia.â
He released my hand and I brought my arms down to my side suddenly feeling a little self-conscience. Even though some girls wore bikini tops I was the only one in full swimming wear. My soaked clothes were sitting in the paddle boat drying off.
Gavin led me up to shore with Stephan trailing behind us. A few party people looked our way but everyone else seemed to be having too much fun to even notice. As we approached a group of kids sitting around in a circle I searched for Landonâs familiar face.
Where would he be if he were even here and what would he be doing? No doubt he would be around other girls; that was Landonâs natural habitat. He was just that kind of guy. My stomach turned with jealousy at the thought of some teenage slut hanging on his shoulder. Was that what he thought about me?
âEarth to Mia.â
Gavinâs voice brought me back to reality and I turned to face him and group of about seven people. There were three girls and four guys all holding red solo cups. And by the look of some of them they had definitely drank too much.
âEveryone, this is Mia,â Gavin said once he got my attention. âSheâs a camp counselor for the summer.â
Everyoneâs eyes bulged when he mentioned I was a counselor. Great going Gavin. âIâm not a nark I swear. Just came to have fun.â
The words slipped from my mouth before I even thought about what I was saying. Did I come just to have fun or did I come in hopes of seeing Landon? He had to be around here somewhere.
One of the boys nodded for me to sit next to him and I lowered myself to the ground. âDamn Gavin getting the older ladies I see,â he said with a chuckle.
âOh weâre just friends, itâs not like that,â I said in a rush, causing a red tint to appear on Gavinâs cheeks.
Instantly regretting my word choice, I tried my best to recover. âSo grab him while you can ladies, heâs a catch.â
I added a little wink at the end and some of the other girls actually looked interested.
âSo should we start the game, I wonât bother introducing everyone youâll never remember anyoneâs name,â Gavin said a little more cheerful than I thought he would be after my last comment.
Game? âSo, we each get three cups filled with beer. Then, the game is just truth or dare. You can choose to chicken out of a dare, but if you chicken then you have to drink the whole cup. Basically you only have three chickens and once you use them all youâre in it game for good, no chickens.â
One of the guys fist pumped in the air and let out a little hoot. Everyone seemed a little rowdy, and the guy next to me leaned over and smiled. âIâm Derek, you can remember my name.â
The sound of his voice and even his face reminded me of Cole and I instantly shrank away. How come something always brought that jerk into my mind?
Derek called out that he was going first and turned to me. âMia truth or dare?â
Raising an eyebrow, I immediately picked dare. Truth or dare was never fun unless you picked dare. At my response, he smiled and looked over his shoulder at the lake. âI dare you so go skinny dipping for three minutes.â
I should have known. âYeah that bridge was crossed at the beginning of camp and Iâm not going back,â I said before taking one of my drinks and chugging down the nasty beer.
I almost gagged on the last sip but I held it in and let the sour liquid run down my throat. Derek looked a little sad that I chickened out, but he still had the faintest hint of a smile.
The game went on, and I naturally zoned out thinking of Landon. My eyes shifted towards the bonfire where a few couples stood with their lips locked in a passionate but very disgusting kiss. If Landon were here I would just feel better. Even though he sometimes made me want to rip out my hair I always felt better with him around. Itâs like one of those weird things that you canât explain. Like when someone tells you to think about what water tastes like, or to make up a new color. You canât grasp it and it confuses the hell out of you.
Why did I let him do this to me? Didnât I tell myself at the beginning of summer not to happen? After Cole, guys just didnât seem important but now all I can think about is Landon. What if I started summer out differently? What if I hadnât of been with Owen, would things between me and Landon still be the same? Suddenly a pang of guilt rushed through my body and I looked over to Gavin. He deserved to know about Owen, but how would he take it?
âMia truth or dare.â
At the sound of my name I focused in on a boy sitting across me with jet black hair and one of those nasty bull nose piercing. He would have been much more attractive without that thing in his face.
Shrugging my shoulders I said dare.
âI dare you toâ¦lick the bottom of Gavinâs feet.â
My nose instantly scrunched up at the thought of my face going anywhere near Gavinâs foot. Not that he had nasty feet or anything, I just couldnât stand feet. Feet are just disgusting. âIâll go with no,â I said irritated with his immature dare. At least make it something fun.
I reached down and noticed this was my last chicken left. Wow, this game was going by fast. I didnât even remember any of the other truth or dares I had been asked. The truth was I hadnât even been paying attention.
Shrugging my shoulders, I grabbed the cup and downed the beer. Only a few minutes later my buzz was no longer a buzz. Being lightweight isnât always the best thing. Looking up at the stars which seemed to be moving by now, I grabbed a handful of sand and let the grains slip between my fingers. A warm sensation suddenly appeared on my thigh and I glanced down.
Derekâs hand rested comfortably on my skin, his eyes were fixed on some else who was chugging down their last beer. The gesture didnât seem very inappropriate, but for some reason I looked around feeling a little guilty. Landon still hadnât showed up, but I was hoping he did.
His diary notes sat unread at the bottom of my dresser drawer. I was still deciding whether or not to read it. I mean, he obviously wanted me to read it, but I felt wrong from the first time I glanced at the journal pages. I for one would not want anyone to read my stuff, so why would he want me to invade his personal space?
Shaking the thoughts from my head, I focused back on the game. One of the girls next to Gavin noticed how he was looking at me. I noticed how he was looking at me like a sad little puppy the whole night. I was upset that he was sad, but I didnât like him like that and I couldnât lie to him. The girl had been flirting with him nonstop, but her efforts slowly died down when she realized he had eyes for me.
A smirk appeared on her face as it was her turn to do truth or dare. âDerek, I dare you to kiss Mia.â
My heart practically skipped a beat when she said the words, but Derek couldnât have looked happier. I peered over at Gavin whoâs face turned a pale white color. Then my eyes shifted to Derek who looked like an eager puppy waiting for a treat. Derek still had chickens left but he seemed not to notice the two cups in front of him.
He leaned in, his lips puckering up ready for contact. For some reason my eyes squeezed shut and I waited for the whole thing to be over but as soon as his lips met mine I knew something had gone completely wrong.
**
Landonâs POV:
The night stars twinkled in the sky as I set off towards the dark wooded path. I almost made it to the trail when someone coughed behind me. Spinning around, I faced a rather grumpy looking Owen. His presence instantly made my mood go grumpy too. Man I hated this guy.
âWhat do you want?â I asked rudely, looking around as if I had somewhere better to be.
And it was true; I did have somewhere better to be.
Owen stuffed his hands in his pockets and glared at me. âI want you to stay away from Mia. Anyway, youâre underage.â
My mouth practically fell open. Was this prick seriously telling me to stay away from Mia? Her face instantly popped into my mind and I had to stop myself from smiling. âWell really because I wasnât thinking the same thing, but for you to stay away from her.â
The cook took a step forward, but he was still few feet away from me. A long silence fell over us and I shifted uncomfortably on my feet, trying to calm my temper.
âLook kid, she needs an older man. Someone who can take care of her. And I donât think your little hands are capable of that.â
The sarcasm in his voice was clear but his attempt to make me mad worked. Maybe he was right; I mean Mia did ask me to leave after I gave her a birthday present just to talk to him. And let me add that the present was definitely something personal and close to my heart. Never in a million years would I think about giving that journal up to anyone, but then Mia came around and it felt right.
I always feel right with her, even if she drived me crazy at the same time. No, Mia didnât want Owen. She made that clear to him and thatâs why he was so frustrated. He deserved this after lying to her about his girlfriend.
âNothing you say will change anything between her and I. maybe you should have thought twice before kissing your girl in front of her. What did you tell her anyway? That she was just a very friendly person visiting?â
Owen snorted. âI told her the truth kid, and I know it was wrong but you donât deserve her.â
Laughing, I swung back around and headed down the trail. âWeâll see what she thinks. Oh, and by the way Iâm not a kid, and I most certainly donât have little hands. Mia knows, you should ask her.â
Okay, so the last comment was unnecessary and a lie but I could practically picture Owenâs face. I took a glance over my shoulder to confirm my feeling. Owenâs eyes were bulging and his face was pitch red. At least I got under his skin.
Sighing, I tracked up the trail for several more minutes jittery at the thought of seeing Mia tonight. It wouldnât be like any other time we were together. If she read the journal notesâwhich Iâm almost positive she didâthan tonight should be special.
I never really opened up to a girl before but with Mia it was different. She wasnât like all the other girls, the ones who fanned over me like I was some goddess. She was sarcastic, hilarious and downright sexy. Even if she did drive me crazy sometimes.
Finally, the sound of rowdy teenagers filled my ears and a grin spread across my face. I came through the clearing to see a huge bonfire spitting up flakes of burned wood and sparks. Red cups littered the ground and even a few couples were getting rowdy in the water. Some people were even playing chicken in the lake.
My eyes darted from person to person trying to find Mia. When my eyes finally found her beautiful auburn hair and golden completion it felt like a sword had been thrust through my chest repeatedly. There she was, in her sexy bikini looking gorgeous as ever. But thatâs not what caught my attention. It was the prick whoâs mouth was over hers.
She pushed away from him, and I swear she turned in my direction but I was already off towards the way I came.
**
Miaâs POV
Derekâs lips were hot and moist and tasted like beer. After about two long seconds, I pushed back and for some reason my eyes darted towards the trail as if something or someone was calling me to look. I saw Landon just in time before he darted back into the dark tree line. My heart sunk into the sand and I jumped up and failed to keep my balance. Crashing back down to the ground, I looked back up frantically to see if he had come back out.
He definitely saw that kiss.
Crap.
EEEEEKKK, I know predictable but AHHHH had to do it.!!!! Donât kill me please :D
