Chapter 29

TWENTY EIGHT

Speaking Isn't My Strong Point

Leia

My eyes widened at Ashley's statement before I began sprinting off down the hallways. I was headed to the medical room where Mrs White would hopefully be.

Gosh, she must had been so scared. Why would anyone want to attack Mrs White? She was the most sweetest lady in the school.

"Mrs White!" I called out once nearing the medical room. "Mrs White, are you here?"

Once stepping into the room, I instantly ran to her and wrapped her up in a hug. Tears began to build up into my eyes fast at the sight of her. She had a huge scratch on her forehead and a bluish greenish bruise on her chin.

"Oh child, don't fret. I'm ok," she chuckled joyfully. "It was just a bit of a fright that's all."

"I'm so glad you're ok," I mumbled into her hair, letting a few tears drop from my eyes. "Mrs White, I was so worried."

Pulling away, Mrs White frowned before saying, "Sweetie, don't worry about me. I'm just an old woman with three children and a husband."

"But Mrs White, you're like a mother figure in my life. I couldn't not worry about you," I sniffed, wiping my eyes and hugging her once again.

Stroking my hair back, she whispered faintly, "And proud to be."

I shedded a few more tears but they just got replaced with brand new ones. Mrs White had supported me for ages and I never got to thank her so I decided it was the right time to do it.

"Thank you," I beamed, looking up at her like a lost puppy.

"Always sweetie," she nodded, flicking my nose. "Always."

I was sitting outside in the fresh afternoon breeze with just a cardigan to keep me warm. My skirt flowed in the wind and luckily it had just enough fabric to cover my legs. My brown hair floated in the air as my weary eyes started filling with tears.

I needed to let it go but I couldn't. They were my family. No-one could forget a close friend or a family member.

Watching the long grass blow in the wind, I picked a daisy from the ground and stared at it through my tears. The tears gave a blurry effect to it.

Noticing a small red lady bird with little specks of black on the wings, I observed how it crawled up the stem of the flower. I smiled briefly before placing it down on the ground carefully. I didn't want to cause any emotional trauma to the lady bird's family if they got squished.

Popping my ear phones into my ears, I closed my eyes and mouthed to the lyrics. It was like the music was blocking out my worries, my past, my everything. Nothing made sense anymore. It was like being dragged, at night, into an unknown direction.

Throughout it, all I could think of was if my mum and dad were still proud of me. Did they back up every choice I made in life? It wasn't fair. I wanted my mummy back. I wanted my daddy back. I was empty without them.

I had got a phone call back about my interview and I had got the job. It was such a surprise but there was a problem. I needed permission from a parent or guardian to say if it was ok to do it. I was under eighteen so I needed a parent's permission.

I wouldn't be soon though so it wouldn't matter if I forged it, right? Shaking my head, I let the voluntary tears fall. My hands were trembling in anger.

I hoped Mason's father rotted in hell. For killing my parents and Mason's mum. He mostly needed to suffer and go through the trauma of losing someone or something. But he didn't have anything left to lose.

After a few minutes, my ear phones were yanked out of my ears. I jumped back a little and sent daggers towards the person who thought it was alright to take my music away.

"Mason! What on Earth do you think you're doing?" I yelled to him, focusing on my ear phones that lay in his hand.

"L-Leia!" Mason panted. "It's your m-mother. She's alive!"

I blinked at him a few times before shaking my head in disagreement and disgust.

"Mason, she can't be," I cried out. "She's dead. Probably been for a while now! Was this some kind of sick joke!?"

Turning away from him, I layed my head onto my knees in despair. My mum wasn't alive. She just wasn't.

"N-No Leia! Of course not," Mason shouted out. "I'm being serious."

Lifting my head up, I studied his face for any hint of lying or uncertainty. His face looked solemn and flushed. Mason's face must had been flushed because of the running he had done.

When he came here, he was panting like crazy. Whatever it was, it must had been urgent. With that thought, I believed him and nodded to show I did.

Mason's shoulders relaxed and he gave me a hand up from my seat.

"So you wanna know how she's alive, huh?" He asked me whilst we walked to wherever my mum was.

"Yes please."

"It was about three years ago, when I was fifteen and working to guard the cells, I saw a woman with brown hair slouching against the wall. I don't know why but she stood out to me. She appeared to me that she was there for no reason," Mason explained, staring at my eyes seriously.

"She was. Apparently my father took some money or something and my mum was some kind of price," I shivered in disgust.

Mason nodded bdofe continuing, "So I decided to talk to her so that I could see what she had done wrong. Catherine told me she was completely and utterly innocent and I believed her."

"One night, I heard she was going to be killed and I settled on getting her out before she was really killed," he added.

Tears started to fill up in my eyes and I wrapped my arms around him in gratitude, "Thank you."

Welcoming my hug, he squeezed me tightly. It was...warm and made me feel safe.

"It's ok," he whispered, rubbing my back as I began to let the tears fall.

I got to see my mummy again! I couldn't have been more happier. It was like my life was slowly coming together again.

"Let's go," I replied, clutching his hand and letting him lead the way.

We passed old cottages and trees. Lots of trees.

When we got to a certain spot with loads of leaves on the ground, Mason began sweeping the leaves away with his foot to reveal a wooden trap door.

Digging to his pockets, his fingers came back with a key, which must have opened the door. He inserted the key and twisted until a clicking noise sounded.

"You excited?" Mason grinned.

"Yeah and nervous," I smiled sheepishly, rubbing my arms.

"Ok," he uttered out before going to lift the door. His smile began to fall once the door wouldn't budge.

"Uhh," Mason said aloud.

"What is it?" I whisper-shouted.

"Nothing," he mumbled. "Must have not locked it."

Raising my eyebrow at him, I soon narrowed my eyes, "You sure?"

"Yeah..." He trailed off, inserting the key back in and twisting.

With a lift, it was open and eerily creeked as it came up. Stepping down the steps with a pale face, Mason gestured for me to follow.

I quickly did the same and hurried along with him.

However in a blink, the door made a loud noise, making me turn around quickly. I let out a squeak when I realised that we were might had been trapped in here

Rushing upwards, I pushed my whole weight onto the hatch and it wouldn't move.

"Mason! It's stuck," I cried out whilst heaving the door. "Are you sure that you're the only one who knows about the door?"

Mason blinked and said, "Posit-"

Cutting himself off, I watched as a look of dread began to wash over him and his shoulders started to slouch.

"My father," he growled out, gritting his teeth in anger.

Mason soon took off, sprinting down the rest of the stairs. My eyes widened like saucers and I immediately followed him.

"Catherine!" He bellowed once onto flat ground. "Catherine, where are you?"

Growling like a bear, Mason scanned around the room hastily.

Worriedly glancing around, my eyes skimmed over a piece of paper pinned to the wall. Slowly, I walked over to it and I gasped aloud.

Written in blood it read:

I told you, son. I know your secret and now I have it. Good luck on finding her. Well, most of her anyway.

A sob fell from my lips as I read the cruel words. How could someone be so horrible?

"M-Mason," I called out, stammering over his name. "Y-Your f-father."

He came running in with a look of panic on his beautiful face. He ripped the paper off of the wall and read the sad words that were painted on it in blood. Hopefully not my mum's.

"I'm sorry, Leia," he said in a timid voice. "I've failed looking after her."

Pulling him into a hug, I stroked his dark muddy hair that fell over his eyes.

"You didn't fail me," I muttered out.

"You saved me," I inaudibly whispered.
