Chapter 28
Miss Camila, Miss Erica, hi, Brody greeted politely.
Lily was Camilaâs college friend who unexpectedly became pregnant in her sophomore year and got married, leaving her studies unfinished: Once bright and clever, she now spent her days as a housewife, busy with three meals a day, taking care of her husband and child, becoming dull and listless.
âBrody is such a good boy!â Camila said, patting his head.
âIâm starving. Letâs order some food,â said Camila, exhausted from a busy day. âIâm so hungry I could eat a whole cow.â
âWait a minute. Iâve got a coupon,â Lily said, pulling out her phone with a smile. This meal deal for four is a real bargain, just over a hundred.â
Erica glanced at the menu, which seemed scant. âAlright, if itâs not enough, weâll order more
âHi-I have a coupon,â Lily called to the waiter.
The waiter quickly verified the coupon,
âDidnât your husband get a promotion?â Erica asked. âWhy are you still pinching pennies?â
âHe said the salary hasnât increased,â Lily replied, stroking her sonâs hair
âThat doesnât make sense. A branch manager at Capital Solutions should be earning a decent wage. Is he still only giving you five hundred for household expenses?â Camila asked, surprised.
Lily nodded bashfully.
Erica frowned. âAt his level, his salary should be at least ten thousand, right?â
Lily, who had never worked, was clueless about these matters and simply went along with what her husband told her. âHe showed me his paycheck, just over two thousand. He says heâs under a lot of pressure with the mortgage and car payments, barely has money left for himself,â she sighed.
âDaddy hit Mommy,â Brody blurted out. His little face crumpled almost to tears.
âHe hit you?â both women exclaimed in shock.
âThat b a s t a r d, how could he hit you! We need to confront him. Thatâs outrageous! Erica burst out angrily.
âHe was just drunk, and he apologized,â Lily said, pulling her cardigan sleeve down.
âHow can you forgive him so easily! Your family is far away, but here, we are your support,â Camila said, grasping her hand.
âDivorce him! Why tolerate such an a s sh o l e who doesnât even provide for you?â Erica slammed the table.
Lily stroked her sonâs hair, smiling helplessly. Divorce had crossed her mind. âI havenât even graduated from college. I have no money. How would I win custodyâ¦â
The harsh reality silenced everyone at the table.
âCome work at my fashion company. Iâll arrange something for you,â Erica offered.
Brody looked up. âMom, you can go to work and eam moneyâ
Really? Lilyâs eyes sparkled with hope. âBut if I work, youâd have to go to after-school careâ¦â
âA few kids in my class wait there for their moms too. I can do itâ Brody said sensibly.
That settles it. Iâll talk to my dad about it tonight,â Erica declared.
Lily nodded, tears streaming down her face.
After dinner, Lily took her son home.
âI think your luck has been turning around latelyâ Erica remarked
âReally?â Camila responded skeptically.
âLook, your salary doubled, and you got a free luxury apartment. Maybe Conpor broke your streak of bad luck?â Erica teased.
Camilaâs cheeks reddened, but upon reflection, her luck seemed to have improved since meeting Connor.
âMaybe try a scratch card?â Erica suggested, spotting a lottery shop across the street.
