Chapter 48
The Tech Billionaire's Assistant
âWelcome to Shalhoub and Sons Electronics Repair, where electronics enter broken but leave with the shine of the new and improved,â Gracieâs bored voice droned.
She had her legs propped up on the glass display case that she sat behind, and her gaming console in her hands.
At the sound of the bell hanging over the door to shop tingling, she was required to utter the standard Shalhoub and Sons welcome notice.
She said the words, all right. But sheâd be damned if she actually made an effort to put some enthusiasm in them.
âWhat electronic device of yours needs to be reborn to the light of the twenty-first century?â Gracie continued, tapping buttons on her console.
âI kissed him.â
Gracie looked up.
Octavia stood before the counter, breathing heavily. Sweat trickled down her forehead. She looked like she had been running.
âOkay,â Gracie said, âgonna need a little more information than that.â
Octavia groaned and flopped onto a nearby chair.
âI kissed my boss, Gracie,â Octavia started. âNo, actually, he kissed me. But then I kissed him back.â
Gracie pressed âpauseâ on her game and set the console on the counter. She glanced at the clock on the opposite wall.
âArenât you supposed to be at work?â Gracie asked.
âI was,â Octavia said, âand then I kissed him! I meanâ¦he kissed me first, but I kissed him back,â she rambled.
âAnd then I think I actually agreed to be fuck buddies with my boss. My boss who I hate. Except I donât hate him as much nowâand yeah, I actually fucking kissed him!â
Octavia bent over and dropped her head into her hands. âI left his officeâ¦and justâ¦I donât knowâ¦panicked. So I came here.â
âInteresting,â Gracie said. âSo what do you want from me?â
Octaviaâs head snapped up. âYour opinion. Was I wrong to kiss him back?â
âProbably,â Gracie said, âyou both crossed a million lines in the realm of employer-employee conduct.â
Octavia groaned and buried her face in her hands again.
âDid you want to?â Gracie asked.
Octavia looked up. âHuh?â
âDid you want to?â Gracie repeated. âDid you want to kiss him?â
Octavia paused. âI hadnâtâ¦thought about it. I mean, not seriously. Heâs an attractive man, of course, so it did cross my mind what it would be like to be sexually involved with him.â
Octavia frowned. âBut those were just fleeting, random thoughts. I didnât walk into his office hoping to make out with him or something. But when he kissed meâ¦well, I didnât mind it.â
Octavia sighed. âHeâs a really good kisser.â
Gracie picked her gaming console up off the counter. âThen whatâs the problem?â
Octavia sighed again. âI shouldnât have. Heâs my boss. And for the longest time, I kinda hated him.â
âYou donât have to like someone to kiss them,â Gracie said.
âThatâs true,â Octavia agreed. âI do like him. Well, thatâs an overstatement. Iâ¦enjoy his company. Sometimes.â
âHe is handy for when you get mugged or lost in snowstorms,â Gracie said.
âHeâs also the reason I end up in places where Iâd get mugged or lost in snowstorms,â Octavia added.
âEither way,â Gracie said, âweâve established that you liked kissing him. I fail to see where the problem is.â
âYou know what? Youâre right,â Octavia said, âand I wonât be his employee much longer. I donât see why we canât be fuck buddies.â
âThere you go,â Gracie said, âas long as it doesnât turn into anything more for either one of you.â
Octavia made a sound between a laugh and a snort.
âThatâs not a problem. I can admit to wanting to sleep with himâfor obvious reasons. He is a man, after all. An unbelievably gorgeous man at that. And dammit, women have needs.â
âIâll pretend those words mean something to me,â Gracie said, tapping buttons on her game, âbut what about on his end? Does he really know that itâs totally casual?â
âHe does,â Octavia said. âI meanâ¦I think he does. I said as much, and he didnât disagree.â
âThatâs convincing,â Gracie said.
âIâm sure thatâs what it will come to,â Octavia said with a shrug. âItâs probably just his warped sense of power that makes him think he wants me.â
âOh?â Gracie said.
âYou said something like it yourself. He wants to see me submit to him or something. Or heâs still trying to neutralize a threat.
âEither way, itâs all to get me under his control and establish himself as the dominant male. Some borderline toxic masculinity thing, I think.â
âWell, if thatâs all worked out then, what do you need my input for?â Gracie said.
Octavia frowned. âDo you think I should do this?â
Gracie looked up from her game. âYou want my opinion on whether or not you should fuck your boss?â
Octavia gave her a sheepish smile. âYes?â
Gracie smirked. âDo what you want, Octavia. Youâre an adult.â
Octavia grinned and stood. âAnd that is why weâre friends, Gracie.â
âBecause I donât really give a shit about your love life?â Gracie said.
âPrecisely.â Octavia started for the door. âNow I have to make it back to the office. He ordered me to be there when he was done with his meeting.â
âThat sounds like a good start to a healthy relationship,â Gracie said.
âNOT a relationship,â Octavia interjected, âitâs aâ¦fuck-with-ship.â
Gracie smiled. âIâm so glad I donât have to deal with things like that.â
