Chapter 44
The Tech Billionaire's Assistant
âWeâre leaving,â Raemon announced.
âWhat? No!â Lila exclaimed. âYou canât leave yet!â
âCome now, Raemon,â Mr. Scott said, âweâre sorry about what happened to your assistant. Itâs absolutely disgusting someone should go through that.
âYou know, itâs so hard to keep the riffraff out of good places. But what can you do?â
âLeave,â Raemon said, âis what I can do.â
Lila threw herself in front of him. âItâs just your assistant! Look at her!â Lila pointed at Octavia.
âSheâs fine. Thereâs no reason for you to leave! Why doesnât she leave if getting mugged is such a traumatic experience?â
Raemon gave Lila a withering look, one full of enough disdain to make her shut her mouth instantly.
âWeâre leaving,â Raemon said with finality, âand since youâre so concerned about the welfare of my employees, Iâll ask you not to order any of them to do anything for youâever again.â
Lilaâs blue eyes widened and pooled with tears. Her rosy lips quivered.
âWhatâs this about?â Mr. Scott demanded, looking from Raemon to Lila sternly.
âLet Lila fill you in,â Raemon said, âon just how it was that my assistant ended up in the âriffraffâ part of town.â
âAnd that was how it went down,â Octavia finished. She nestled farther into the warm, familiar softness of her couch and selected a chip from the bowl in her lap.
âSo, as you can see, Lila is out, and youâre back in the running. So to speak,â Octavia said, taking a bite of the chip.
Sierra replied with an unaffected sniff. âSo what? It doesnât matter.â
Gracie, sitting on the carpet across from Octavia, looked up from her phone.
âAre you no longer in love with Raemon Kentworth?â Gracie asked.
Sierra gave them both a glum look. She hugged her knees to herself, folding her body into the armchair she was sitting in.
âI love him more than ever,â she proclaimed, âbut it doesnât matter. After the way he saw meâ¦â She choked. âI can never see him again!â
Octavia took a bite of another chip. âWell, what can you do?â she said with a shrug.
âIf only Iâd known!â Sierra continued lamenting. âIf only heâd come an hour earlier. If only he could have seen me as I truly am!â
âMinus the face mask, Iâd say he did,â Octavia said.
âDid you say anything to him?â Gracie asked.
Sierra shook her head. âI was tooâ¦stunned. And thenâ¦embarrassed.â
âDoes it matter then?â Gracie said. âItâs not like heâd recognize you if he met you again.â
Octavia perked up. âYeah! He doesnât know your name or anything. If he asks, I could tell him that the person he saw was an escaped lunatic from the insane asylum. Not my housemate.â
Sierra looked up. âReally? Youâd do that?â
âOnly for you,â Octavia said with sincerity.
Sierra smiled. âIâ¦I guess that could work. And since he broke up with Lila, heâs probably devastated. I could be his rebound girl!â
âIt is every womanâs dream,â Gracie commented.
Sierra stood. âThatâs it! Iâm going to make Raemon Kentworth fall in love with me, no matter what.â
Octavia and Gracie watched her leave the room in silence.
Gracie turned to Octavia. âSo what really happened?â
Octavia frowned. âYouâre not going to believe itâ¦â
Octavia relayed everything that had happened on the trip.
âDamn, that was close,â Gracie said when she was finished.
âNo shit,â Octavia said.
âSo,â Gracie continued, âhe saved your life.â
âI wouldnât exactly say he saved my life,â Octavia said. âIt was more like he spared me an unpleasant experience. I would have gotten out of that okay, I think.â
âReally? Three guys against one?â Gracie said.
âHe managed it,â Octavia said.
âHe also probably spends a third of his life in the gym,â Gracie said.
âI know Krav Maga,â Octavia countered.
âHe knows jiujitsu. And spends a third of his life in the gym,â Gracie repeated. âYou havenât seen the inside of a gym sinceâ¦â
âEver,â Octavia finished. She sighed. âOkay, fine. Maybe he did kind of, almost save my life. Whatever.â
Gracie was silent for a minute. Then she asked, âAre you going to take the job?â
âI really want to,â Octavia admitted, âbutâ¦I donât see any way that Raemon would agree.â
âOh, itâs âRaemonâ now, is it?â
Octavia frowned. âDammit. Mr. Kentworth, I mean.â
âSounds like you two are getting really close,â Gracie observed.
âItâs nothing,â Octavia said, but a tad too quickly. âWeâre justâ¦um, weâre justâ¦â
âFriends?â Gracie supplied.
âGod, no,â Octavia said. âMore likeâ¦friendly acquaintances.â
âAnd whatâs that supposed to be?â Gracie said with a derisive snort.
âPeople who areâ¦acquainted,â Octavia started. She racked her brain for more words. âWho areâ¦friendly-ish to each other.â
âFriendly-ish?â Gracie repeated.
âYes. Itâs not the same thing as liking someone. It just means I know himâ¦and I donât exactly want to kill him,â Octavia finished. âNot all the time anyway.â
âR-i-i-ight,â Gracie said, with a look that showed how much she believed the validity of Octaviaâs words.
