Chapter 12: Elijah

The Billionaire of New York CityWords: 2106

9:00 p.m.

The doors to his office remained closed. Kate was gone, so there was no one to tell me when he would be ready. I would expect him to have already opened the doors but I was wrong. Debating whether or not I should just leave, I heard yelling.

"Why would you even think that?" The anger in his voice startled me.

"Because you asshole, you are lying!" The voice was a woman's. I could hear the pain in her voice.

"I am not fucking lying. I would never cheat on you!" His voice got louder with every word and more anger surrounded them.

There was a moment of silence until the woman broke it. She wasn't yelling. She was quiet. But not quiet enough for me not to hear.

"I don't believe you, Elijah." There was more silence. After a minute the door creaked opened. A woman in her mid 20's slowly walked out. Her short black hair clung to her wet cheeks. Mascara was smeared under her eyes. It was like she was completely oblivious to me. For she walked away towards the elevator without acknowledging me. Seconds later Mr. Carter appeared in the doorway. His hair was messy and sweat showed on his neck.

Attempting to lighten the mood I spoke. "So your first name is Elijah?"

He, however, did not lighten in any way. "Come on." He briskly turned around and walked towards his desk. I quickly grabbed my purse and followed him into his office, shutting the door behind me.

Elijah reached under his desk and pulled out a stack of papers. "This," he grunted setting them down on his desk, "is for you."

I exhaled a sigh. His eyes looked at me annoyingly. I reached for papers and picked them up. "And what am I supposed to do with these?"

His eyes fell onto his computer and he fiercely typed away. "Check your email."

And so I did. I was supposed to read all of them, mark the important information (such as dates, people, etc) then file them in the correct meeting they were supposed to be presented. Which meant I would have to look up all the meetings Mr. Carter had upcoming and know what they were for in order to appoint the correct files to the correct meeting.

This is going to be a long night.
