Chapter 72
The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) by Jaike e Rylee
Chapter 72
Cassie,
I excuse myself from my team and on the corridor, I dial Kaydenâs number.
He answers in one ring. Now that I think of it, even back when we were married, when I call him, he does answer in one or a few rings. And he always sounded worried, as if he was afraid something bad had happened to me.
âDid you send them?â I ask.
âDid you like them?â he asks back.
âThe macarons are delicious, the coffee is the perfect blend, and the flowers are exquisite,â I reply.
âYouâre welcome, then.â
âThatâs not the point, Kayden!â I hiss.
âOkay, what is the point then?â
âYou shouldnât be sending me flowers or pastries or coffee.â
âWhy not? Doesnât Sullivan send you stuff all the time?â
âThatâs different.â
âHow is that different?â I can hear the sadness in his voice. âHeâs your suitor, isnât he not?â
âWell, yes. I think so.â
âThen why canât I do the same? Iâm trying to win you over, too, am I not?â
I sigh. In all honesty, I find his gesture sweet. And I did appreciate it.
âLook, Cassie,â he says. âI asked for time. I know that my life is complicated right now. But Iâm trying to find a way that will work out for us. I donât care about what people will say about me, but I am going to make sure that you and Kai will be safe. I will fix this situation with Megan. Just trust me, okay?â
âShould I, though?â I ask sadly. âShould I put my fate in your hands just like I did seven years ago?â
âIf you do, you will realize that I am no longer the same man you married seven years ago,â he replies. âOr maybe I am the same man. But this time, there will be no more masks, no pretenses. I am no longer going to hide what I really feel about you.â
âCassie!â
I turn around and see Archie motioning me to go back to the meeting.
âLook, I gotta go,â I tell Kayden. âThank you for the stuff that you sent. The flowers are beautiful. And Iâve always loved French macarons.â
âI know,â he says.
âHuh? How would you know?â
âI observe. And contrary to your belief, I actually do pay attention to you. And thereâs a lot of things I remember about you. Things that you like. Things that make you smile. Things that⦠make you sad.â

âYou would remember that wonât you? The things that make sad?â
He sighs heavily. âI know. And I promise I will make up for that for as long as I live.â
I gotta go, Kayden. Weâre in the middle of a meeting.â
âYeah. You have a presentation next week. I guess Iâll see you then.â
âIf we ever get this done right somehow.â
âNeed any help?â
âNot at the moment. Iâm confident in my team. But I will remember what
âPlease. You can call me anytime.â
âAlright. Bye now.â
âI love you.â
I pause for a moment. âSee you later.â
you said.â
Then I hung up. I glance at the phone in my hand, feeling a wave of conflicting emotions. Kaydenâs words echo in my mind, his promises and declarations stirring something deep within me. As I make my way back to the meeting, the scent of the French macarons he sent linger in the air, a sweet reminder of his thoughtful gestures. Despite my efforts to push him away, a part of me yearn for his presence, for his unwavering determination to make things right.
A week later, I stand in front of Kingâs Court Boardroom in South Carolina to present the latest developments on Kingâs Legend.
My phone beeps. I check my message and see Kaydenâs name on the screen.
Kayden: Good luck. You got this.
I glance across the room and meet Kaydenâs eyes. He gives me a smile and a wink.
âAre we all here?â one of the shareholders ask.
âWe are still waiting for Miss Brown.â
âLetâs wait for a couple more minutes.â
We waited a good fifteen minutes and Megan is a noâshow.
âMr. Steele, is Miss Brown joining us anytime soon?â
All eyes go to Kayden. He stares at us blankly and is evident he has no idea where Megan could have been. âWhy would he know?â
âBecause she is his fiancee, isnât he?â
âRight. So, where is she?â
I bite my lip. As if I need another reminder that in the eyes of everybody, Kayden belongs to Megan.
âWell, I am not aware of Miss Brownâs whereabouts,â Kayden replies in a firm, cold voice. âBut I cannot wait to hear

what Miss Carlisle will present today. Shall we begin?â
Kayden stares at me. In his face, I can see a quiet apology.
âOkay, letâs begin.â
I present the new designs for Kingâs Legend, which includes a revolutionary concept for sustainability and eco- friendliness. As I unveil the plans, the room fills with murmurs of surprise.
âThis grand structure of Kingâs Legend is now not just a symbol of luxury and opulence but also a beacon of sustainability. We will showcase the efficient use of solar panels, not just on the roof, but also a great portion of the
walls.â
âWait, arenât majority of the walls supposed to be made of glass?â
âYes. You are right,â I reply. âIt looks like elegant glass, but we will be using transparent photovoltaic glass panels. So, it may look like glass, but in truth, it is harnessing the sunâs energy to power the whole building.â
Kayden watches me with a mix of pride and longing in his eyes. I can sense his silent support and approval.
As I conclude, the shareholders erupt into applause, impressed by our innovative approach to sustainable design.
âWe will take a break and we will discuss the financials and funding sources in the next phase.â
I take a moment to got to the ladies room, finally breathing in a sense of relief and pride. The shareholders are impressed. I am finally able to pull this off. Now, everybody will think that I deserve this position. I am the head of Kingâs Court not just because I share a DNA with its previous chairman.
I walk back towards the boardroom. Just as I reach for the doorknob, a strong hand grabs my wrist and pulls me into the empty room across the boardroom.
Startled, I turn around to find myself faceâtoâface with Kayden.
âCassie,â he breathes out my name, his voice low and husky. âI miss you so damn much!â
He crushes his l*ps against mine in a fierce, desperate k*ss that sends shockwaves through my body. The taste of him is intoxicating, a blend of mint and whiskey, familiar yet forbidden.
I try to push him away, my hands trembling as I attempt to regain control.
âKayden, stop,â I manage to whisper against his l*ps, the words coming out weak and unconvincing. âThis is not the time and place.â
âI know,â he whispers back as he nuzzles my neck. âBut I canât seem to stop myself.â
âKaydenâ¦â I give him another push, this time, firmer. He stops k*ssing me. âWhen somebody sees us, they will think Iâm wrecking your engagement with Megan, and sheâs pregnant with your child.â
He sighs, finally coming back to his senses. âI know,â he says in a frustrated voice. âIf it were up to me, youâd be wearing a huge rock on your finger right now. And Iâd shout out to the world that you are my fiancee, and that once upon a time, I was lucky enough to call you my wife.â
âBut thatâs not the case, Kayden.â
He nods. âWhen are you coming back to New York?â âTomorrow.â

âHave dinner with me at least.â
âBut we canâtâ¦â
âI know a place. Thereâs discreet VIP area. I know the owner. No one will know us. Just please⦠I want to have a nice, quiet dinner with you.â
I sigh. Then I nod. âOkay.â
He smiles at me triumphantly. Then he leans forward and gives me a k*ss on the forehead.
âWe need to go.â
I follow him towards the door. âYou go first. Iâll go after you.â
I nod. Then I turn the knob.
But as I open the door, I find myself face to face withâ¦
Megan.
