Chapter 31

Cassie.

“What are you doing here, Megan?”

“Why?” she asks, raising a brow at me. “Am I not allowed to visit my dear sister in the hospital? I heard it was quite a flight you had.”

I realize that she’s talking about my brush with death, when I fell of a cliff.

I smirk. “I bet you were disappointed that I made it out in one piece.”

“Oh, sweetie, I’m not even going to deny that! Especially after I found out that my boyfriend was in the car with you!”

I sigh. Here we go again. “What do you want, Megan?”

“What do I want? Well, for starters, you can tell me why you and Kayden were together when you fell off that cliff?”

“I don’t have an answer for that Megan. Why don’t you ask Kayden yourself?”

“You can’t give me an answer because we both know what you are trying to do! You have always been in love with him. That is why you seduced him and blackmailed him all those years ago. You’ve always wanted what was mine!”

“Megan, when I met Kayden before we got married, I didn’t even know that you knew him! Remember? You were the one who set me up in that temp job. You said it was a private party, and I’m gonna be one of the waitresses. I was desperate for money to pay my university fees. But when I got there, Megan, the place was empty! And then suddenly, I fell dizzy. I think I was drugged,” I look at her accusingly.

“I didn’t drug you!” she says angrily. “Are you sure you didn’t go here drunk and high?”

“Why would I show up drunk or high on a job, Megan? You know me. I have always been responsible!”

“Liar! You probably found out which room Kayden was staying in, and it happened to be in the same building as my boss. You went there instead!”

“I didn’t even know Kayden back then! How the hell would I even go to his hotel room?”

“Then why did you sleep with him when you don’t even know hon?”

I open my mouth to answer but no words come out. How can I answer that? How can I tell her that the moment I laid on Kayden I was instantly attracted to him. And I know it was the same for him, too.

We were both intoxicated, but we were sane enough, sober enough to know what was happening between us.

“Megan, look. It’s all in the past now. I didn’t steal Kayden from you. But as far as I know, you and Kayden have been in contact while I was still married to him! So, please do not ever accuse me of stealing him from you!”

Megan’s face contorted with anger as she took a step closer, her voice dripping with venom. “You’re acting all innocent now, huh? Have you forgotten how well I know you! Don’t you think I don’t know? You bided your time, and now, you waltzed back into our lives, and I know exactly what you’re after! You want Kayden back. And you will do everything to seduce him.

I stand my ground, refusing to cower under her accusations. “I didn’t do anything. Megan. I came back to town for King’s Court. I have no intention of letting Kayden back into my life!”

“So, you’re telling me, that when you were riding in his car, it’s just purely out of business? That you two weren’t cheating on me? Oh, Come on!”

I stare at her, unable to believe her delusions. “You don’t get to play the victim here, Megan. You have terrorized me far too long! You even burned down the house that you know reminds me so much of my mother!”

“That was an accident!”

“Maybe. But I bet that made you really happy!”

“Well, if I can’t have it, you wont,

“Does Kayden know this side of you? You act sweet and innocent, but you are just a scheming bitch who won’t hesitate to hurt people just to get what you want?”

Her eyes widen in disbelief. “Well, he will never believe you!

“It doesn’t matter,/Megan! I don’t want anything to do with you! If you and Kayden are having problems, leave me out of it!” I groan in frustration. “I just want to live my life in peace! So, could you just leave me the hell alone?”

“You want me to do that? Then leave! Go bad to Manhattan or whatever hell it is you u came from! Reject the King’s Legend Project. Self your shares in King’s Court, and never come back to this place! Maybe then, I will leave you alone.”

“Ugh! Are you out of your mind? King’s Court is my grandfather’s legacy. It’s my mother’s inheritance, her memory. Why will I give that up? Just because you’re feeling insecure about your relationship with Kayden? Because you’re feeling threatened that your boyfriend will choose to come back to me? Because you’re scared that he will realize that it was a mistake to leave me for you in the first place?”

It was as if time stood still for a moment. I could see the wheels turning in Megan’s head as she tried to rationalize my words. Her eyes widen in surprise, their irises dilating in fear and disbelief. And I know that I’ve hit the jackpot

“You’re… you’re wrong,” she says in a shaking voice. “Kayden loves me. He would never choose you above me! We have a history together. Whatever you do, you will never win against me!”

I smirk at her. “Right, Megan. Keep telling yourself that! Maybe if you repeat it so often, it will probably come true.”

She realizes what I’m saying and she throws a feat. “I am warning you, Cassie! Back off! Stay away from Kayden. I will not b so forgiving! I will make sure that you will regret it for the rest of your life!”

Megan’s face twisted in a mix of anger and hurt. I could see the truth behind her words, the insecurity and fear that gripped her heart. I know she doesn’t have a hold of Kayden and we both know it. She already lost him.

threats are empty, Megan. We both know that. In the end, it’s not your decision to make. Kayden will decide whether he will stay with you or not. But I can’t care less. Just as long as you two leave me out of it. Don’t blame me for your fucking misfortune!”

“Just heed my warning, bitch!” With a final glare, Megan storms out of the hospital room, slamming the door behind her.

When she is gone, I am able to relax.

Megan must have been shocked to hear me fighting back, like I never did in the past.

But after I had Kai, I promised myself that I will fight for our survival. I promised that no one can run over me ever again.

After Megan left, I doze off. It is already dark when I open my eyes again. I am surprised to see a man, standing beside my bed. The man is not wearing any hospital attire, but he looks familiar, and yet, I can’t figure out from where. He examines

the IV that is connected to my arm, murmuring to himself.

“What is he doing? He doesn’t look like he’s from the hospital.”

“Excuse me, Mister?” I call out his attention.

Slowly, he turns to me. I see his face, and I feel like I have seen him somewhere before, but I just cannot place where.

“Cassie…” he whispers, as he smirks at me..

“What are you doing?” I ask him.

He doesn’t wipe off the smirk on his face, but he doesn’t answer

“What the “Suddenly, I realize that he’s not here to make me feel better. This guy is here to get the job done. He’s here to

kill me!

“Help!” I shout. Going by instinct, I remove the IV from my arm. “Help me…”

But maybe I had been too late. Whatever he injected in the IV has already started to take effect because I started feeling dizzy, until finally, everything turns to darkiss.
