by “Cassie!” I hear Lyn call me from the living room. “Look who decided to stop

and surprise you and Kai.”

Another surprise visitor? As it is, I already had a busy afternoon.

First, Kayden just showed up, after sneaking out of the hospital He revealed that he just had a realization that he wanted me back in his life. And then he shows up in the living room, making their first meeting inevitable. Just as I had feared, he’d immediately suspect that Kai is his son. If he hadn’t fainted, I’m sure we would be on our way to have a DNA test right now.

I was pretty sure I would never cross paths with him again that day I signed our divorce papers. How would I know that I’d be here now, arguing about my son’s paternity with him?

When I reach the living room, I am surprised to see Ethan standing beside Lyn.

“The fuck?” I curse without thinking.

He shakes his head, smiling widely at me. “I changed my mind. I canceled all my meetings. I figured, you, me and Kai could spend the day together. You’ve been working hard. Kai could use a family day out.”

I smile at him nervously. This is hardly the time to tease about playing house. How can we joke about Ethan becoming a father to Kai, when Kai’s biological father is sleeping in my bed right now?

Taking a deep breath, I try to find the right words to tell him about Kayden’s unexpected visit.

“Ethan, there’s something I need to tell you,” I start hesitantly, my heart pounding in my chest.

His expression quickly changes to a look of alarm. “Is everything alright?”

I nod. “Yes. It’s just that.” I pause. “Kayden came here.”

“Steele?” he asks “Wasn’t he just in surgery?”

I nod. “I’m not going to argue with that.”

“Doesn’t matter what he wanted,” I reply. “What matters is that be, he met Kai

“You know that he will not take no for an answer, right? We have to tell him that so that he will not suspect anything. That bastard doesn’t deserve to even “know” Kai! He treated you like shit! He doesn’t get to redeem himself for everything he did to you!” Ethan’s face contorted into a furious scowl, and I totally understand why he’s angry.

“You’re you’re right. How could he come back into my life? After all that I’ve been through with him, I’m not just going to forget everything and let him be part of our lives again.”

Ethan nods. He reaches forward to caress my cheek gently. “Hey I do understand your hesitation to tell him the truth, but trust me. This is a dangerous game we’re playing. This man can take your son away from you. He’s a powerful man. Steele is the kind of man who takes what he wants. And what father wouldn’t want your son?”

“I know, Ethan. But you know Kayden will not immediately believe in something, just because I said it. I mean, for the four years of our marriage, I’ve been telling him I had nothing to do with our forced wedding and he never believed a thing I said!”

Ethan heaves a frustrated sigh, and then he fishes his phone from his pocket. He starts texting somethin

“What are you doing?”

It takes a moment for him to respond. “I’m talking to my friend who owns a lab. We need to show Kayden proof that he isn’t Kai’s father.”

“But he is! Unless you mean that we will falsify some documents

“Desperate times call for desperate measures, sweetheart.”

My eyes widen. I am shocked that Ethan is thinking of taking it that far. “But Ethan, that’s a felony. I might end up losing Kai either way.”

“We won’t do anything else with it. We will just show it to his face. Hopefully, that will make him back off.”

“I don’t think this is a good idea, Ethan.”

“Right now, this may be the easiest choice we have. Hopefully, he doesn’t bother you again. Then you can have the time to think about what you will do. Whether you want to introduce him to Kai or you want him to stay away forever.” He shakes
