The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) Chapter 18
The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) by Jaike e Rylee
Chapter 18
Kayden.
The moment I step into the vast lake house property, memories start flooding my brain. Memories of my childhood, my mother, and that day I met the woman I promised to take care of for the rest of my life-Megan.
Amanda had a point yesterday when she reminded me that Megan saved my life. I feel guilty because I know I have been neglecting her lately. I had been too busy with work. Acquiring Kingâs Court had been my top priority, and then⦠Cassie came back to town, and she had been on my mind a lot.
Fuck
It should be Megan. I made a promise a long time ago. It wasnât like me to go back on a promise. I think Megan and I have been disconnected lately. We have been growing apart. I am discovering that we usually donât like the same things.
Maybe we just need time to reconnect. I need to be reminded of our connection. Thatâs why I chose to take her back here, to the lake resort that my family owned. Because this is where it all began.
âWhy are we here?â she asks. âI thought we re gonna go shopping.â
âDonât you shop with your friends all the time?â
She frowns. âBut you said weâre going on a date.
I nod. âYes. And this is it. I took the day off so we can spend some time with nature.â
âAre we spending the night here?â
Immediately, I cringe. The last time I spent the night here was when my father announced that he was going to marry my stepmother. And that didnât end well for me.
âWeâll just spend the day. We havenât been here in a long time. I heard they made a lot of improvements and ad facilities. Letâs just check it out.â
âOkay, whatever you say, sweetheart.â
Is that sarcasmn I hear in her voice?
I am amazed by the transformation that has taken place since the last time I was here. The lake glistens under the bri inviting us to explore its new water attractions.
âDid you pack your bathing suit like I told you to?â I ask her.
âYeah. But Iâm not going in one of those slides,â she replies. âIâll just sunbathe.â
Her answer disappoints me a little. I was hoping we could have a little fun under the sun.
As we enter the main lobby, I can see that the staff were busy preparing for an event.
âGood morning, Mister Steele,â the manager greets me.
âWhatâs going on?â

Chapter 18
âOh, we have some
e VIP guests who will dine at the restaurant. They made some special requests.â
âAll the hassle for one guest?â Megan asks, rolling her eyes.
âOf course, Maâam. Mister Steele has repeatedly emphasized on customer satisfaction. And besides he smiles at me proudly. âWe were compensated handsomely for it.â
âWell, keep up the good work.â I pat him on the back.
I pull Meganâs hand and lead her towards the garden. Years ago. paid my contractors to build a treehouse in place of my old playhouse.
âWhere are you taking me?â she asks.
âYouâll see!â My eyes glitter with excitement. I canât wait to show Megan the treehouse. After all, it was her suggestion.
We reach the garden and right in the center, just a few meters away from the lake, sits a massive treehouse constructed on sturdy tree. The charming house is perched high above the ground, itâs wooden structure showcasing intricate carvings and designs that seem to come alive under the sunlight.
I pull Megan so we can climb up the wooden staircase.
âDo we really have to?â she asks.
âOf course!â
âI donât think the steps are safe,â she keeps complaining.
âIt is safe, silly. Besides, Iâll catch you if you fall.â
Reluctantly, she climbs up the stairs and I closely follow. Once inside, I watch Meganâs expression as she looks around. Maybe I was waiting for her to acknowledge that I followed her suggestion when we first met. I built a treehouse in this garden.
But Megan doesnât say anything. She just continues to look around with a bored expression on her face.
âWh-what do you think?â I ask.
She shrugs. âShouldnât this treehouse be in the main garden near the main entrance?â
âHuh?â
Did I hear her right?
âI mean itâs a waste to have it here. Who would wander off in this part of the resort?â
Again, did 1 hear her right?
She notices the intercom on the side of the door, along with the emergency box. She opens the box and pulls out two sets of blankets from it. My mouthcurves into a smile. I remember her complaining when we first met. âWhy is there only one set of blankets? Do you not come here with playmates?â
I ordered the intercom and the toolbox with blankets in case somebody gets trapped here again.
âWho uses the intercom nowadays?â Megan asks

would
She rolls her eyes. âAs if kids would know how to use it. And why are there blankets when thereâs no bed?â
1 stare back at her, completely puzzled. It isnât the reaction I was expecting from her.
I expected her to laugh or maybe even praise me for thinking of the intercom, the emergency lights, and the blankets. Not many people get trapped in the middle of the forest, but Megan and I were! We knew what it was like to be cold and helpless, and I thought this treehouse would be something only she could understand.
But now has she forgotten what we went through?
âAnyway, can we go now?â
Questions race inside my mind, but I simply nod. I was wondering if these memories did not really mean anything to Megan
As we walk back, I remember that I gave her a ring. That ring belonged to my mother.
âMegan, I gave you a ring before,â I say. âDo you still have it?â
She blinks back at me. Then she beams and flashes her finger in front of me. âItâs this one.â
I stare back at the platinum band on her finger and I nod in satisfaction.
âI know this belonged to your mother, she smiles. âIâm keeping it until you replace it with a different kind of ring.â Then she winks at me. I know exactly what ring she wants next time.
Iâll be damned!
I leave Megan to sunbathe in the pool area while I meet with the manager to make rounds at the resort.
When I get back. I find that there is a commotion in the pool area.
âWhatâs going on?â I ask the bystander.
âA child almost drowned. He jumped off the pool when the mother wasnât lookingâ
âThereâs a lifeguard, wasnât there?â
âYes. But that lady saw the child first and didnât even bother to dive in.â
1 follow the direction he is pointing at and realize that he is referring to Megan, standing on the side, arguing with some
guests.
As I approach her, I can hear their conversation.
âWhy is there no lifeguard around?â Megan argues. âThe child could have drowned!â
âThe lifeguard was attending to another guest. You were beside the child. Why didnât you dive in?â
âWell Megan trails off, and I find myself waiting for her answer. âFirst, itâs not my job. And second⦠I⦠I canât swim. If I dove in, the lifeguard would be saving us both. So, all I could do was scream.
Wait! Did I hear that right?

When we first met, I remember her saying, âOh, please! I practically live in water. My dream is to become a mermaid!â
She saved me from drowning. Thatâs how we met. Thatâs how we formed our

But now⦠why did she say that she doesnât know how to swim?
I am about to call her attention when a group of cars suddenly drive into the resort and stopping at the fi notice one of the cars was a Bentley.
It must be the VIP guests that made the special arrangements.

No wonder he rides a Bentley. And no wonder the manager said the resort was compensated handsomely.
I wonder what kind of request Sullivan had made.
I watch him go around to the passenger side to open the door.
And suddenly, my heart seems to have stopped beating as I watch a strawberry blonde siren step out of the car.
