Chapter 45
Filthy Rich Husband
MAGGIE
Some women might fantasize about two men fighting for her love, but reality wasnât like a movie. This was so much worse.
When Carter sees Logan making his way to our table, he pushes the ring back into his pocket, so itâs clear to me that Logan has no idea what Carter was planning all this time.
Logan looks between me and Carter. âIs there a problem?â
âItâs nothing for you to worry about, baby,â I assure him.
Logan passes a look filled with warning toward Carter. âParis and I are going to sit at that table.â
He points at a vacant space on the opposite side. âYou can carry on with your conversation. Donât mind us. I just want to make sure sheâs okay.â
The table isnât too far. Itâs close, and Iâm sure heâs here because heâs worried about me and wants to eavesdrop on the conversation. I kiss his cheek, telling Logan how much it means to me.
Carter just stares at the exchange in annoyance. He continues to show his arrogance through his attitude.
Logan pulls me close to him to whisper in my ear. âAre you all right? The doctor said youâre not supposed to be stressed about anything.â
âIâm fine, Logan. Really.â
He doesnât seem convinced but lets go of me. âIâll be close if you need me.â
When Logan walks away, Carter sits back. His expression remains unreadable, but I know he isnât happy about Logan being in the vicinity.
âWhat was all that about?â he asks, his tone curt.
âNothing for you to worry about.â
I take a sip of my coffee. Thatâs the only saving grace of this meetup.
âCarter, I canât marry you.â
âMaggie, we have a family together. You and I have a son that I want back in my life. How do you expect me to just forget all of it?â
âI donât expect you to forget it, but thereâs another way that you can continue to be in Chaseâs life, but itâs not through marriage with me.â
He sighs like Iâm a child that needs a lot of grilling.
âMaggie, if this is your revenge for everything that happened in the past, you got it. Youâve successfully hurt me, but all Iâm asking is for a second chance. Everyone deserves that, right?â
When I decided to meet Carter, Iâd been calm and knew what I had to say. I rehearsed my lines repeatedly.
I even felt bad for him about the whole situation, but listening to him now only proves that heâs the same entitled guy I once knew. Heâs selfish and thinks he can have his way again.
Before I can say another word, he slides into the seat beside me and takes my hand in his. From the opposite side, I notice Logan boring holes into where my hand rests in Carterâs.
I try to wiggle free, but Carter doesnât let go. âI made a big mistake. I know that.â
âLike I said, I forgive you, but expect nothing else from me.â
âWhy are you doing this to us?â
âIâm in love with Logan.â
He goes silent for what feels like an eternity. âLoganâs in his forties, and in a few years, heâs not going to be young anymore. Do you seriously want to stay married to a man who probably has nothing in common with you?â
He reaches for my hand again. âYou need someone in your life who can grow old with you and help raise that kid.
âBy the time Chase goes off to college, Loganâs going to be almost sixty and youâre still going to be very young, Maggie. Have you wondered how Chase is going to feel when people ask him if his stepdad is his grandfather?â
~Wow. I have to hand it to him for thinking so far ahead.~
âDo not fucking talk about him like that ever again,â I grit out and pull my hands out of his grasp. âWhat is wrong with you, Carter?â
âYou think I donât know that you married him because your father was almost bankrupt. If itâs money that you need, Maggie, I have it too. You donât need a sugar daddy for it.â
âYou disgusting son of aâ
âMommy!â Chase comes running toward me and hugs my waist.
âHey, sweetie.â
He looks at Carter shyly and rubs my belly. âMommyâs going to have another baby! Iâm so excited!â
Carter looks shocked by the revelation, and heâs speechless for a moment as he stares at Chase. He gives a nervous laugh. âThatâs wonderful, buddy.â
He clears his throat. âDo you want to come live with me, Chase?â
Chaseâs face blanches. He doesnât seem so happy anymore. âI want to live with Mommy and Daddy.â
âIâm your dad,â Carter insists.
Chaseâs hold on my waist tightens, averting his eyes from Carter. âLogan is my daddy.â
âStepfather,â Carter corrects him, and tries to grab Chase. âSonâ¦look hereâ¦â
âI think thatâs enough, Carter.â That was Logan. He pulls Chase away from him. âYouâve done enough damage for one day.â
Carter looks straight at Logan, leveling him with an icy stare. Itâs some kind of macho stare-down Iâm not thrilled to witness.
âYou promised to not interfere in my conversation with Maggie.â
âAnd I never did, not until your conversation has turned into harassment,â Logan says. Itâs the calm before a storm.
âIâm telling you again right now, Carter. Sheâs my wife and not a toy that you can fucking play around with. You talk to her with the respect she deserves.â
Chase has tears in his eyes. Even though he doesnât understand the details of what was going on, heâs old enough to know things are bad.
âChaseâ¦â That was Paris. He passed me a weak smile. âWhy donât we go for a drive? Weâll get your favorite ice cream.â
When Paris takes Chase out of the restaurant, Carter turns to look at Logan. âYou really think Maggie loves you?â
Heâs not done yet.
âI know she does, and I donât need anyoneâs opinion on the matter, least of all yours,â Logan snaps.
âWhat Maggie loves is maintaining her wealthy status. She loves going on shopping sprees, and you were a good catch.â
âSeriously?â Iâm contemplating picking up the knife on the table and stabbing him with it.
âYou think I donât fucking know?!â he whisper-yells in my face.
Iâm glad there arenât many people in the restaurant to witness this.
âYou used me to get back to Logan.â His hands are balled into tight fists as he continues to glare at me. âYou were never going to marry me anyway.â
âThatâs not true, Carter. If you recall our conversation, I asked you about marriage, but it wasnât something you wanted from me. You asked me to get rid of the baby, so how can you blame me for anything?â
âDid you fucking love me?â he asks.
I start to answer and then falter. âOfâ¦of course, I did.â
He laughs humorlessly. âYou lying little bitch.â He spits the words at me.
It happens in seconds. Logan gets up from his seat and takes a swing at Carter. The veins in his temple are throbbing. Itâs a powerful punch that crashes into the cutlery. A few drops of blood drip on the floor.
If we didnât have anyoneâs attention before, well, now we do.
Everything else is a blur after that. Carter canât stop throwing abuse at me, and Loganâs voice booms in the background.
Theyâre fighting because of me, the two men in my life, one from the past and the other from my present.
âIâm an attorney. I donât care what power you have, Malory, but Iâm going to make sure I get full custody of my son. Mark my words.â
âWell, you can try, Cruz. Weâll see you in court.â Logan didnât even bat an eye at the threats.
I never expected things to go this far.
When we sit in the car, Logan turns in his seat to look at me. His expression has lost all the harsh lines and instead is filled with tenderness.
âTalk to me, Mags. Whatâs bothering you?â
Tears blurred my vision. This was a disaster waiting to happen. I donât know why I thought it wasnât going to get out of hand.
âI only wanted to pacify the situation. I thought it would be good to come to an understanding and let Carter see Chase occasionally. I didnât mean for things to go this far,â I cried. âDo we have to get into a custody battle?â
Logan caressed my back slowly. âIt wonât come to that. Iâll make sure of it.â He kissed my cheek. âDonât get stressed, Maggie. Itâs not good for you or the baby.â
I nodded, reaching for the Kleenex. âYouâre right.â
He continues to look at me as if he can read my mind. âWhatâs wrong?â
I look up into his stormy blue eyes. âHe wasnât lying about it.â
Logan blinks. âAbout what?â
âI never loved him, Logan.â I have to tell someone. âI donât even know what I was doing back then. You werenât paying attention to me, and he was showering me with it. I thoughtâ¦â
Logan stops touching me. âYou thought what?â
âIâm sorryâ¦,â I whisper. âBack then, I was a naive girl. I thought if I slept with Carter, if I dated him, you would notice me again.â
