Brotherly Love
Three. The Perfect Number
MADISON
âSo how was it? I noticed the kids were ~way~ too full of energy today,â Ezra said while keeping his eyes on the road.
From the flagship gym to the Silverside location, it was almost forty-five minutes by car this time of day, but at least the other gym was close to the twinsâ office.
âJesus, yes. I donât know what they all ate before coming to class, but it took me fifteen minutes to get them in line and concentrating. Jamie, always such a sweetheart, had to help me to get his friendsâ attention.â
âThings going okay with the twins? I havenât really seen them much sinceâ¦â Ezra trailed off, his teeth playing nervously with his lips.
She stretched out her arm to rub his shoulder. âHeyâ¦Itâs only been a few days, and weâve all beenâ¦busy.â She bit back a laugh as she thought about her definition of busy: having sex like bunnies anywhere and everywhere.
Her brother smirked, definitely thinking of how âbusyâ he and Sam had been. âYeah, I guess you could say that.â
He smiled at her before looking back at the road. âBut have you noticed Liamâs been kind of weird lately?â
âI know, right? He hasnât been himself for weeks. Do you think itâs just the phone calls from our parents? Or something more? Wait! Do you think he could be seeing someone?â
âI certainly hope so! After Sienna he didnât want anything to do with love anymore.â
âYeah, I know.â She frowned. âEven if I never got what actually happened between them.â
Sheâd always wondered if Liamâs college girlfriend had dumped him because he had to move home and take care of his little sister.
âThatâs his story to tell, Maddi. Anyway, does Sam talk about me?â
Her brother sounded like a teenager with a crush.
âToo much! Luckily, I set up an important ruleâdonât tell me about having sex with my brother. Otherwise, Iâm sure sheâd never shut up.â
He grinned. âWhat can I say?â
âOh, ~please~ shut up.â She reached for her snowflake pendant and rolled it in her fingers. âHave you guys had âthe talkâ yet?â
She thought about her own âtalkâ with the twins quite often. It made her happy and wet at the same time.
âWell, not really. Iâve never said that word to anyone but you, Maddi. Itâs difficult. Sometimes I feel it on the tip of my tongue, but then it just stays there and I canât get it out.
âBut Iâm sure she knows,â he said, pulling into the gymâs parking lot. âSheâs probably just waiting for me to say it firstâ¦right?â
Madison giggled when her eyes met her brotherâs. She wished she could take a picture of the bashful expression on his faceâand then send it to Sam, of course.
âEzraâ¦sheâs had a crush on you forever!â
âTrust me though, Maddi. She made me sweat for it when we first started seeing each other.â
âI can imagine. Sometimes I wonder if Iâve been too nice with the twins. I probably should have played harder to get.â
âThey would have waited.â He was silent for a moment, then sighed. âEven though I got super madâand I will ~never~ forgive myself for thatâthe truth is, I also wasnât that surprised.
âThey always adored you. And when you left for college, Ethan acted weird. Sullen and withdrawn. Easily pissed off.
âAt first me and Liam thought it was because of him being so protective and distrustful of the world, but then⦠I donât know, something changed. Also with Levi.â
âI wondered why they never came to visit, even though they kept in touch quite well.â
âThat was mostly Levi, I think. Every time youâd video chat with us, Ethan would just leave the room.
âBut when Liam had to cancel his plans to go and pick you up, Ethan offered right away. I guess he wanted some time with you. Or maybe he just wanted to vet that boyfriend of yours.â
Madison slipped her hand into her brotherâs. It had been ages since theyâd spoken so openly to each other, and it felt good. âBut if youâd already considered the possibility, why did it upset you so much?â
âBecause I didnât expect ~both~ of them to be in love with you. One was easy to accept. Two⦠I guess it got to be too much.
âAlso, I never thought youâd be interested in either of them, let alone both.â
She could hardly bear the sadness in his eyes. âOh, Ezra. Iâm sorry I didnât talk to you about it.â
âItâs okay, Maddi. So long as you know you can talk to me now.â He flicked her nose playfully. âShall we go?â
Inside the gym they found Liam just leaving a class, sweaty and tired.
âWhat are you two doing here?â The way his face lit up made Madison happy theyâd come to surprise him.
âNothing. We finished work early, and since we donât get to see you that often, we thought weâd come and say hi,â she explained.
âThanks!â He hugged them.
âEw!â Madison teased, pretending to shake herself off after his sweaty hug.
âDid you have something specific in mind?â he asked as they strolled toward the changing rooms.
âI was thinking we could go down to Club16 for happy hour.â Madison fluttered her lashes at both her brothers, which was how sheâd always been able to convince them to go along with what she wanted.
âSounds good to me.â Ezra looked at Liam for his answer.
âSure. Levi can come too. It isnât too far from their office.â
âLevi told me he wonât be finished for a bit, but heâll come by when heâs done. To start, though, itâll be just us three, like the good old days.â
âFair enough. Iâm glad you decided to stop by.â They had reached the changing room. âYou two can wait down in the bar if you want. I wonât take long.â

âSo what brought both of you here today? Iâm sure it wasnât just because you missed me,â Liam said. He alternated his gaze between Madison and Ezra as he sipped his whiskey.
âActually, it ~was~ just to see you.â Madison raised her margarita in a toast. âWeâve been like ships passing in the night since I got back, and when we do talk, you seem like youâve got the weight of the world on your shoulders. Weâre concerned about you!â
âYeah, and now that the twins and Sam are going to be around even more, we have to make a point to spend time together, just us,â Ezra added, then took a sip of his rum and coke.
âWell, you know a lot of that stress was from the delayed gym openingâ¦and our parents. But not ~all~ of it. And I agree about spending more time just usâ¦
âEspecially since Sam and the twins arenât the only ones whoâll be hanging around more.â
âWhat?â
âYeah, you two havenât been the only ones keeping secrets.â
