Girl Talk and Boys’ Lunch
Three. The Perfect Number
MADISON
Madison had just dressed in a pair of pink pajamas and climbed into bed when Sam poked her head in.
At Madisonâs raised brows, Sam laughed. âEzraâs already asleep. Poor guyâs been working like a dog. I thought we could catch up a bit.â
As tired as she was, Madison was glad to see her friend and eager to hear more about her romance with Ezra, as well as share the details of her weekend with the twins.
So she patted the mattress.
And when Sam hurried over and got in beside her, Madison pinched Samâs side, making her jump. âSo how long has this been going on?â
Sam rested her head against Madisonâs shoulder and sighed dramatically. âIâm sorry I didnât tell you sooner. But itâs only been official since Friday night, and Ezra is ~so~ stubborn.â
âI know he is. Iâm not mad, Sam, Iâm happy. I truly am. Youâve had a crush on him since you were a little kid, for heavenâs sake! It was about time he gave in. Heâs always cared for you.â
âYeah, but he sure kept me guessing. We saw each other when I was home on break from school, you know. You didnât come back, but sometimes me and your brothers and the twins would hang out.
âThen last year, he started to show a little more interest than usual. I would see him at the gym, and he would chat with me for hours. He still kept his Friday night tradition, though.
âOn my last break, he kissed me, but we were drunk and we never talked about it. And thenâ¦nothing the day before I left for college again.â
âUntil you came back this time?â Madison prompted.
âRight. I guess he was afraid of the age gapâand you.â
âMe?â Madison sat up straighter and turned to look at Sam, who was forced to lift her head. âWhy? Heâs the psycho, not me.â
âBut youâre his little sister, and Iâm your best friend!â
âSo? Youâre both adults. But just to be clear, if either of you hurts the other, Iâll have to hurt you too.â
Sam laughed, shaking her head, then punched Madisonâs shoulder playfully. âSo I guess Iâm not allowed to give you any hot details, right?â
âCorrect. Iâd rather not know about whatâs in my brotherâs pants, thanks.â
âOkay, fine.â Sam rolled her eyes and shrugged before piercing Madison with her trademark inquisitive stare. âBut now itâs your turn. Spill it.â
âRight. Letâs start with the fact that Liam knows.â
~âWhat?â~
âYep. Iâm shocked too, mostly because heâs not even mad.â
âHe never would be, Madison. Not at you.â
âOf course. Because for that I have Ezra.â
Samâs face got more serious. âUm, I have to tell you. Heâs been going crazy knowing that youâre dating someone but not knowing who it is. And he ~really~ wasnât happy about your little hickey there.â
âYeah, tell me something I ~donât~ know. Just wait until I tell him the guy Iâm dating is actually a duo, and oh yeah, theyâre his best friends.â
âLiam will be there for damage control.â
âI suppose. But oh, Samâ¦â Madison sighed. âI think Iâm in love with them. And they havenât said the actual words yet, butâ¦I think they love me too.â
Shock and happiness were all mixed on Samâs face.
âI mean, Iâve known them both my entire life, but Iâve been discovering so many new things about them. It makes me wonder if I ever really knew them at all before.â
âAnd you finally ~know them,~ right? Youâre not a virgin anymore?â Sam waggled her eyebrows playfully, and they both cracked up as they slid back down against the pillows and cuddled up as theyâd done since they were little.
âWell, ~technically~ I still am,â Madison said once theyâd settled down. âBut not for long. They keep saying they want to take things slow, that thereâs no hurry, but the things weâve done so far have been soâ¦â She sighed happily.
âIâm so happy for you, Mad. And I promise it will be all good.â
âI really hope so, Sam. And Iâm happy for you too. I just wish it wasnât so complicated with Ezra. I canât even figure out where to start.â
âWell, youâve got Liam and me on your side, so weâll find a way,â Sam assured her. ââNight, babe.â
ââNight, Sam.â
With a lighter heart, Madison curled up with her friend and drifted off to sleep.
ETHAN
~Where the fuck was Liam already?~
Ethan sat across from his brother at their favorite bistro, tapping his fingers impatiently on the table.
âJesus, Ethan,â Levi finally snapped. âYouâre making me even more nervous!â
But before Ethan could fire back at Levi, Liam arrived. Finally.
âHey, guys.â
Liamâs smile and genuinely warm greeting relaxed him a little, but the thing about Liam was that he usually smiled, even when he was upset.
And heâd been upset a lot lately. Though people who didnât know him as well as the two of them wouldnât have been able to tell.
Liam had started hiding his true feelings when his so-called parents had taken off and left him and his brother to raise their eleven-year-old sister.
~Madison~âEthanâs heart ached at the thought of herâthe reason they were all here.
Liam took his seat, and Ethan resumed tapping his fingers. Levi clenched his jaw, but Ethan wasnât sure if it was because of the tapping or because of his nerves.
Actually, no. He was pretty sure it was both.
âSeriously, guys?â Liam said incredulously, then chuckled a little. âWhat do you think Iâm about to do? Weâre in a public place, for fuckâs sake.â
Ethan and Levi looked at each other, then silently agreed that Ethan should speak first. âWell, weâre dating your sister. Do you really expect us to believe that youâre fine with it?â
Liam continued to smile serenely as he shook his head. â~Yes.~ Because you should know me by now, you idiots.â
âWe do know you, and thatâs why weâre concerned. We know what youâve been through, what Madisonâs been through, and most relevant to this situation, we know how protective you are of her.â
Adrian, the manager, delivered their usual drinksâthree whiskeys on the rocks and a bottle of water.
Liam nodded his thanks, and when Adrian left, said, âListen, I invited you out for lunch to make sure you know Iâm ~not~ angry at you. Clearly you got the wrong message.â
Liam took a sip of his whiskey. âThe only thing I ask is that you respect ~her~, not me. Treat her like the amazing gift she is. Allow her to know the real you. Let her be the center of your world. She deserves that.
âBut I do need to know that youâll never do wrong by her, that youâll fight for her and show her what the world is about in the best way you can.
âSheâs young and must be free to choose her own life and make her own mistakes. Sheâs strong and stubborn, and you need to be strong too. Donât give up at the first sight of problems.
âAs the three of us are well aware, life doesnât always go according to plan and troubles are a part of it. Fight for her and let her fight for you. If you can make her happy, I want nothing more.â
And there it was, Liamâs smile, working its magic to cover the sadness and concern that Ethan knew always hovered in his mind.
Liam shrugged. âWhen it comes to Ezra, I donât know whatâs going to happen, but he wonât take it well. Heâs as stubborn as she is. Trust me when I say that the two of them will probably put on a hell of a show.
âSo Iâll need you to be strong and take whatever comesâ¦
âAnd we all know that whatâs coming is going to shake her foundation to the core.â
