CHAPTER 15

The diary of an African man

"Nkosana let's go" she said for the fifth time

"Zama let's just-"

"Sit and relax for a bit, you have been saying that for the last ten minutes"

"Fine let's go." I said defeated. "Let's just get this over with." I mumbled to myself while getting out of the car to open her door for her.

As soon as we walked inside the amusement park the atmosphere was filled with screaming children, hot dogs and candy. Without me noticing, Zama had already wandered off to a candy stall that  had enough candy to give you diabetes.

I walked to where she was and by the time I reached her ,I saw that she already had two packets of Lay's in her hands. She thanked the seller, immediately opened the packet and stuffed its contents in her mouth. I stuck my hand inside the packet of chips and she swatted my hand away and continued to glare at it.

"Nkosana these are mine." She scolded "Nawa awakho." She said while shoving them in my hands.

"Zama for goodness sake, you have a whole party pack all to yourself." I stated the obvious.

"What's wrong with a party pack?" She asked as if I had grown a few extra ears on my head. "I'm a one man party" she added and walked away to God knows where.

She proved me wrong, I never knew  quiet people ate so much. She finished her party pack, grabbed a handful of mine as well, bought candy floss, lollipops and other sorts of junk that could kill a person. In that time we had gone go-cart riding, she had ridden those horse nonsense things that kept spinning around and she had waved at me every time I came into view. In that time frame of three hours I had learnt that she was a very childish adult, she loved children and she consumed candy like her life depended on it.

The three of us were sitting, by three of us I mean Zama, Lifalandile and I. Lifalandile as in, a teddy bear I had won for her in a bull's eye game that she had lost six times. She was perplexed by how I could shoot directly into the bull's eye four times in a row. She asked how my aiming was so good and I told her, I shot birds when I was young.

I was lying, at some point in my life I had to learn to survive and guns were my only solution. It was a live or die situation for my brothers and I.

She had named the teddy bear after me, well my second name. She was munching on a chocolate chip muffins with no care in the world. I was proud of myself for staying in that childish place for more than five minutes, I wasn't sure whether it was her additive smile, her light brown eyes, the melodic sound of her soft giggles or just her simply being herself. The mere sight of her gave my soul salvation, like something strangely familiar and yet so foreign clashing in the centre of the universe. She made me want to be a little boy with no knowledge of the world I would soon live in. The colour of her eyes in the sun was oddly majestic which made the sides of my lips twitch.

"Stop staring." She said breaking my chain of thoughts.

"You're beautiful." I said effortlessly without second thought.

"Thank you but stop staring at me like that." She said while pointing at my face.

"Like what?" I questioned, I was curious to know how I looked like when I starred and so I raised my eyebrows, urging her to continue. She looked as if she was trying to articulate the right words to describe my starring.

"Ngathi idombolo elikugqoko." She said while nodding, clearly satisfied

with her choice of words while I shook my head in disappointment.

"Kodwa Zama, idombolo Pho?" I asked with confusion.

"Idombolo limunandi, Nkosana." She argued.

" I'm seriously starting to get really worried about you, Zama." I said with fake concern and she laughed it off.

She stood up when she was done eating and dragged me along with her. It was the seventh time she was doing that, in most cases I would put a bullet through a person's forehead if they ever did that but yet again Zama was an exception. She dragged me until we reached a roller coaster and stopped to take a good look at it.

"Are you scared of heights?" She questioned

"No."

"Me too." She lied and proceeded to buying tickets for the both of us.

We stood in line and two girly men dresses in bum shorts and crop tops had started to converse with us, well Zama rather. I stayed quiet and waited for them to get tired of talking. They didn't. We got into the roller coaster and put our seat belts on.

"Aww, you look so cute together." One cooed and the other squeeled while clapping his manicured nails.

"Hayi, Kahle Simi." Zama said while rolling her eyes.

"Let me clear the confusion, my name is Simo but I go by Simi." He said upon seeing my confused face. I nodded in understanding and faced the other way again. The 'three' ladies whispered to each other about how cute I was and how they liked quiet men who looked dangerous at the same time. I fought the urge to plunge my pocket knife inside the giggling mans throat. I acted as if I could not hear them and busied myself on my phone.

A count down was made before the roller coaster ride began and as soon as the roller coaster was gaining speed Zama's nails dug into my skin and she clung onto me. She then screamed about how she was too young to die. I wanted to burst into a fit of laughter. The gays in front of us were screaming for their lives as well.

By the end of the ride, Zama was a quivering mess with her hair messed up by the wind, her eyes doubled in size, still raw from the fear. She still clung onto me with her nails in my skin but that was the least of my worries. I asked if she was okay and she absent mindedly nodded. I unbuckled her seat belt and helped her up. She looked like she had seen a ghost and a panel of guilt struck my bone for allowing  her into the roller coaster knowing very well that she was lying about not being afraid of heights.

I helped her stand up and I let her hold onto my left arm while I held Lifalethu with my right arm and I took her to a candy stall to cheer her up. The very smell of the candy had built a turbine in the pit of my stomach and I could feel all the candy I had forcefully eaten make its way up my oesophagus. I speed  walked to the nearest bin and spilled the contents into it. Zama had a wide grin spread across her face.

"You're weak." She said while chewing on her chocolate.

She later disappeared into the the crowd and came back with a bottle of water and handed it to me. She looked alot better upon seeing me sick.

"You are so weak, it was just cotton candy and a few packs of chips." She was lying. It was two cotton candies, four pack of chips, gummy bears, liquorice, ice cream and a cupcake.

I fixed myself up and dragged her to the car so we could leave. That was a different kind of hell with colours everywhere and screaming children. I  started the ignition and sped away.

"I'm sorry for making you eat so much junk." She spoke, "I'm sure you're mad because you're going to lose your perfectly sculpted arms." She added and small smile adorned my face. She thought I had perfectly sculpted arms.

I stopped by at a pharmacy and bought mouth wash and immune boosters. I also stopped by to buy her food since she was hungry and so we drove to KFC.

"Hi, can we please have a dunked burger, zinga wings, dunked wings, crusher, two ice creams and coke. " She said excitedly,"Nkosana, what do you want to have?" She added. Kanti wasn't she ordering for the both  of us?

"Zinga wings, sprite and zinga burger." I said.

As soon as we received our food she indulged in the two ice creams. She paid no attention to me and carried on to eat the rest of her food while I drove to her apartment and had a few sips of my drink. I did my best to try and ignore the slurping sounds of the krusher, her satisfied moans and the popping of bones when she chewed them. Once she was done with her food she plopped her body on the seat. I was still amazed by the fact that she finished her food, all of it.

She bobbed her head back and forth to non existent music, it was probably because she just ate. She always did that, dancing when she eats. It's been my secret little hobby to watch her do that, its weird but beautiful and it brought solace to my soul in the most foreign way.

I parked the car as soon as I got to her apartment and started eating my food while she busied herself with her phone. I finished whatever I was eating and walked Zama to her apartment while I carried Lifa.

We walked into her apartment and found Khetho seated on the couch with her legs crossed and her eyes focused on her phone. She turned  her head around and her eyes darted between Zama and I and with each passing second I could be see her eyes getting darker with rage.

"What the actual fuck Zama." She finally said through gritted teeth and Zama immediately turned into a nervous mess.

To tell you the truth, I was barely even moved by her anger, I frankly did not care and so I ignored her and went to Zama's room and left Lifa there. I then went back to the lounge only to find Khetho whisper yelling at Zama and while Zama's eyes studied the floor while she listened. I, again, did not care about whatever Khetho was saying and I walked up to Zama.

"Sengiyahamba, ngizokufonela before ulale." I said softly and left a kiss on her forehead, "usalekahle sthandwa Sami." I added and I could see Khetho's anger heighten.

"I'll walk you out." She said softly and so I held onto her hand although she wanted to wiggle out of my hold, she eventually gave up a few seconds after and let me hold her. We walked to my car in a comfortable silence. We then stared at each other not knowing what to do next and so I ended up following the itch in my fingers and pulled her in for a hug. In a nano second her hands rested on my cheeks while her lips softly collided with mine, giving my nerves absolutely no time to register what had transpired and  in no time at all she already hid her face in my chest. I then kissed her on her forehead said my goodbyes and drove home.

I know what you're thinking.

I'm an idiot.

I agree.

I did not call her that particular night but I simply wished her goodnight via text message. I then stared at her number on my phone while war had erupted in mind on whether to call her or not. I did that for thirty five minutes and my senses had finally bothered to return to me and so I told myself to stop doing whatever I was doing and I stared at a picture of hers I had taken at the amusement park for two hours.

Again, I know.

I'm an idiot.
