Chapter 45 *Slumber Party
~Sophia
Tap. Tap. Tap.
I grit my teeth as the cold water touches my bare skin. Theyâre like ice that sends pinpricks to my body. My mom said that if I want my fever to be completely gone, I have to take a cold shower.
So here I am, enduring this nightmare. Iâm feeling fine by the second though, and I canât help but think itâs worth it. Iâm already absent yesterday so I need to go to school today because I donât want to be late with the discussions in class.
Iâm grateful Driana came by last night and explained to me what they did. She even went to my classrooms and asked my classmates about what they tackled so she can inform me. Before she went home with Draky, I narrated what happened to my parents. She looked worried, and made me promise to call her when I need something- anything. The twins made my recovery fast. Now I can feel my body returning to normal.
When Iâm refreshed, I walk out of my bathroom and into my bedroom to rummage my closet.
After a few seconds, I find what Iâm looking for. A smile appears on my face when I look at the mirror- Iâm wearing a floral blouse that emphasizes my blue eyes, a jeans that thatâs not too tight or too loose, and my favorite sandals.
Before I forgot, I clasp the necklace and the charm bracelet Draky and Driana gave me for my birthday. Grabbing my bag, I head downstairs and when I smell something delicious, I decide to go to the kitchen.
âMorning,â I say to my mom whoâs preparing a breakfast.
âMorning Sophia,â she replies.
âWhereâs Dad?â I ask.
âStill sleeping,â she answers. âHereâs your food, Iâll drive you to school when youâre done eating.â
âNo, I can ride a bus."
âI insist,â she states, a smile on her face.
âOkay.â And then I start eating bacon, eggs, and sausages. Being sick made me hungry.
When I finished eating, I brush my teeth again and meet my mom in her car.
âI almost forgot to tell you," my mom says, starting the engine of her car, "your dad and I are going to the hospital out of town later.â
âWhat?â I ask. âI thought heâs fine? Thereâs no need to go to the hospital.â
âYes.â She sighs. âRemember, he has to go twice a year, and tomorrow will be his first check up after the operation.â
âBut he already went there last week,â I mumble.
âThat doesnât count.â
âOh.â
âI donât want you to stay in the house alone,â she tells me.
âMom!â
âYou can sleep at Drianaâs place,â she suggests.
âIâm seventeen,â I complain.
âPrecisely.â
âI can take care of myself,â I say, frowning.
âI know.â She smiles sadly. âItâs the people today I donât trust.â
âHow many days do I have to stay there?â
She shrugs. âProbably two? It depends on the findings of the doctor.â
âThey wonât find anything,â I state stubbornly.
âI know,â she says, smiling.
I grumble my complaints under my breath.
âBesides, donât you want a slumber party?â
Oh, I do. Iâd love to have a slumber party in the house of Draky. I wonder what it would feel like, sleeping in the same roof as him. Not that I havenât experienced that before; when we were in Andreâs house. But tonight will be different because itâs their house where Iâm staying.
The time passed by in a rush. Itâs just the same, like any other day. Before I know it, the first half of it is already done and I find myself making my way to our table in the cafeteria, a tray of food in hand. I donât even remember ordering. Weird.
Driana is already sitting on her chair, waiting for me. âHey,â she says when I take the chair across from her.
I can see that sheâs in a good mood. âHi,â I reply. And then I ask her if I can stay in their house tonight because my parents are going out of town.
âOf course,â Driana says excitedly, âitâs more than fine!â
I smile at her enthusiasm. âThank you,â I say gratefully.
âI always wanted a slumber party,â she says, grinning cheekily.
âHey, is that a slumber party I heard?â Andre asks, sitting beside Driana.
Draky follows after him and takes the chair beside me.
âIsnât that your table over there?â Driana asks, pointing to the center table.
âIs it bad to sit with my twin?â Draky asks bemusedly.
Driana rolls her eyes and mutters something under her breath.
âSo, a slumber party huh?â Andre asks, tilting his head to the side.
âOh, um, I asked Driana if I can stay in their house tonight,â I say.
âWhy?â
âMy mom and dad will go out of town, and they donât want me to be alone in the house,â I explain.
âWhy not sleep in our house?â Andre suggests.
âBecause sheâll stay in our house,â Driana states.
Andre nudges her on the side. âYou can stay in our house too you know.â
In the corner of my eye, I glance at Draky. Heâs unusually quiet today.
âNo thanks,â Driana says wryly.
âOw!â Andre pouts, and looks at her with puppy dog eyes.
Driana laughs and says, âThat doesnât work on me.â
Andre groans. âWeâll have a party!â
âI donât like parties,â she replies, wrinkling her nose.
âMe too,â I chime in.
Andre looks at me disapprovingly and about to say something when Driana beats him to it. âShe hasnât slept in our house yet.â
He smiles sheepishly and says, âThereâs still next time.â
âYou can stay in the house too if you want,â Draky offers. âBesides, itâs just us; my mom will go out of town with my dad.â
Thereâs something about the way he said dadâ
âReally?â Andre asks, his whole face lighting up.
âYeah. I assume Sophia will stay in Drianaâs room. . .â
Driana nods.
âYou can sleep in the guest room then,â Draky finishes.
âCan I sleep in your room?â Andre asks, wiggling his eyebrows.
âNo. itâs the guest room or not.â
âYouâre no fun,â he complains, scowling at his best friend.
Draky smirks at him and resumes eating his food.
âSo what do you propose weâll do later?â Andre asks after a few minutes.
âI donât know to you two, but Sophia and I will stay in my room,â Driana says, grinning at the two boys.
Before they can respond, the bell rings, signaling that lunch time is over. Time for Literature.
âLetâs go?â Draky says.
âSee you later,â I tell Driana and Andre.
âSee you,â they both say at the same time. And then they both look at each other, wide grin on their faces. âJinx!â
I follow Draky to our room, a small smile on my face. Driana and Andre really have somethingâ
âWant me to drive you later?â he asks, interrupting my thoughts.
âIâll go to our house first,â I say, âto get clothes and stuff.â
He shrugs. âThatâs okay, I can wait for you.â
âIf you say so,â I reply, entering the classroom.
The discussion of Mrs. Coelho revolves around A Midsummerâs Night Dream. I wonder when we will finished it and start to read a new book.
A tap on my shoulder makes me turn back. âWhat?â I ask Draky. I know itâs him. No one will bother me while the professor is discussing her lesson.
âI forgot to ask you yesterday,â he starts, âwhat happened between you and Cassidy?â
âIt was nothing,â I answer evasively.
âDid she hurt you?â
Involuntarily, my gaze moves to my arm where she hold it tightly. Fortunately no bruises showed.
Draky follows my gaze until his eyes land on the red marks done by Cassidyâs nails.
âItâs nothing,â I mutter, turning back in front of the room. I can feel his eyes on my back, burning holes but Iâm afraid to see his reaction. I know that if eyes can change color according to your mood, his will be as black as coal.
-~-~-~-
After school, Driana, Draky, Andre, and I went to my house to get clothes. When we were done, we drove to Driana and Drakyâs house. We just finished eating our dinner â Chinese food. None of us was in the mood to cook so we settled with takeout food. Weâre in the family room and we already watched two movies, nonstop. We even played Monopoly. No wonder my eyes are drooping; itâs almost eleven in the evening already.
âLetâs play would you rather,â Andre suggests.
âSure,â Driana agrees. âI havenât played that in a long time.â
Why do I have a feeling that itâs like the Truth or Dare we played a few days ago?
âCool,â he says, grinning. âMe first. Would you rather die in sizzling lava or be cut and eaten by cannibals?â
âCreepy,â I mutter, remembering the movie Wrong Turn.
âSo?â Andre asks, raising his eyebrow.
âIâd rather die in the lava,â Draky answers.
âMe too,â I say.
âMe three,â Driana chimes in. âAt least Iâd die whole.â
âYouâll melt in the hot lava,â Andre says obviously.
âStill.â
âOkay, my turn,â Draky says, âWould you rather choose the one you love or the one who loves you?â
âDoes the one I love return my feelings?â Andre asks.
âNope,â Draky says, âItâs one way. Same with the one who loves you. You donât love her.â
âWhat kind of question is that?â
âA hypothetical one.â
âI know.â Andre groans. âIâd choose the one who loves me.â
âEven though you donât love her?â Driana asks incredulously.
âYes,â he answers, âbecause the one I love might love someone else and I know the one who loves me loves only me and no one else.â
Weâre all silent for a minute, and then Draky turns to me.
âIâd choose the one I love,â I answer slowly.
âWhy?â Draky asks.
âBecause . . . Because even though thereâs a chance that he doesnât return my love for him, my heart belongs to him. And I wonât compromise it with someone I donât have feelings with.â
âOuch,â Andre says, putting a hand over his heart. âThat makes me feel bad about my choice.â
I smile sheepishly and brush the loose strand of hair behind my ear.
âWhat about you little sister?â Draky asks.
âI. . . Iâm sleepy,â Driana says, standing up.
âAnswer the question first,â Andre complains.
She sticks out her tongue and says, âGood night.â
âYou know, thatâs a good idea,â I agree, standing up as well. âGood night.â
The boys sigh as Driana and I make our way to her room. We lay on the bed, both of us wears silly smile on our faces.
âThank you,â she says.
âNo problem,â I reply.
The minutes turn to hours as I wait for sleep to come. Whatâs wrong with me? Why canât I sleep? This makes me remember of the time when I was in Andreâs - I thought I forgot how to sleep.
Heaving a sigh, I get up slowly and decide to walk around the house.
âCanât sleep?â
My heart leaps in my throat when I hear a voice behind me.
âSorry,â Draky mutters, shutting his door behind him, âDidnât mean to scare you.â
I wait for my heart to beat normally.
âCanât sleep?â he repeats.
I nod.
âHomesick?â he asks amusedly.
âNo,â I murmur. âI donât know whatâs wrong with my brain, it donât want to shut up.â
He suddenly grins, like he thought of a really good idea. âLetâs go.â
âWhere?â Donât tell me itâs one of his havens again.
He grabs my hand without answering my question and leads me to their back porch.
As soon as he opens the door, the October wind rushes to my face. A shiver runs down my spine and I automatically rub my arm with my free hand. Drakyâs still holding the other one and heâll not let go any sooner.
When I see the veranda I thought weâre going there but we still continue. Their back lawn is spacious.
âDraky?â
âYeah?â
âWhere are we going?â
âHere,â he says, stopping beside a tree.
I stare at him, confused.
He points upward with his forefinger and my gaze follows it.
A surprise gasp escapes from my lips when I see what heâs pointing at. âYou have a tree house!â I say excitedly. On the thick branches of the tree is a little wooden house, one side wide open, without a wall. I almost jump and down with glee. Thankfully, I control myself at the last second. I donât want to appear immature to him.
âYou like it?â he asks, suppressing a smile.
âAbsolutely! I always wanted a tree house since I was young,â I say, grinning from ear to ear.
He laughs at my enthusiasm, and then probably remembers that weâre outside. He shrugs his jacket off and hands it to me.
I take it gratefully and wear it. Itâs quite long but itâs okay, as long as it envelops me in its warmth. It smells like him. When boys smell nice, they automatically become attractive. Not that Draky is not already attractive as it is.
I shake my head furiously. I donât like where my thoughts are headed.
I wonder why Driana didnât mention that they have a tree house.
Yeah, think about the tree house.
âThatâs good because weâre going to climb it,â Draky says, a huge grin on his face.
âReally?â I ask my eyes widening as I glance at the ladder attached to the trunk of the tree.
âAfraid?â he asks, his mouth twitching at the corners.
âOf course not,â I scoff.
âLetâs climb then.â
âYou go first,â I say.
âYou sure?â he asks, a concern expression crossing his face. âI can catch you if youââ
âI wonât fall,â I interject, letting go of his hand to cross my arms over my chest.
âBe careful,â he says, and then starts to ascend the ladders while I watch his back, printing in my mind the steps he takes so that I can copy them when itâs my turn.
A few seconds later, heâs sitting on the bench in the tree house. He smiles down at me and urges me to climb.
Taking a deep breath, I hold the ladder tightly and take my first step. I donât have to worry because although the ladder was made of wood, itâs attached to the tree. I continue slowly but surely and before I know it, Iâm on the last step.
Draky offers his hand and I gratefully take it. He pulls me to him and we walk steadily to the bench he was sitting a while ago.
âI made it,â I say when I find my voice.
âYes you did,â he replies, his eyes twinkling in delight.
I look down and wish I hadnât because I see the ground that is thirty feet below us.
Donât be afraid! I chastise myself. You wonât fall down.
âWant to hold my hand?â Draky asks.
I nod and take it.
Weâre both silent, and itâs not awkward because weâre contented in just looking at the stars in the sky. And there are a lot. Wherever I look, I see them. Itâs so enchanting.
To my surprise, Draky opens his mouth and beautiful words come tumbling after. âAnd Iâd give up forever to touch you âcause I know that you feel me somehow,â he sings. âYouâre the closest to heaven that Iâll ever be and I donât want you to go home right now. .â
I forgot how amazing his voice is. I notice that he altered a word from the real lyrics. Of course I recognize the song. Itâs Iris by Goo Goo Dolls. I canât believe heâs singing it for me. No one, ever, sang a song for me before. Not even him.
âAnd all I can taste is this moment,â he continues, âAnd all I can breathe is your life. 'Cause sooner or later itâs over. I just donât want to miss you tonight.â He stops and looks at me. Really looks at me, like heâs seeing the first sunrise of his life. âPie, I have to tell you something.â
Why does my instinct screams that heâll confess about the bet now? Oh God, I donât know what to react. He sang a song for me, and now heâs going to admit something that will change both of our lives.
My heart beats faster than usual, trying to burst out of my ribs. Even though itâs cold, my hands start to sweat. Can he read my face? I know its open book to him. But I hope and pray that he will not profess now. My thoughts are jumbled, and Iâm tongue tied. Iâm not yet ready. . .
âNot yet ready for your fantasy to end,â a soft voice whispers in my mind.
I cringe inwardly because itâs one of the darkest secrets I have. How did it leak out of its box?
âPie, I. . .â Sighing, he pulls his hair, frustrated.
I donât know why I am relieved. I should be the one urging him to confess everything. But why am I assuming that he will tell me about it? Maybe itâs another thing?
âForget it,â he mutters, breaking away from my gaze.
Suddenly I feel brave, so I ask, âWhat is it?â
âI. . . I like you,â he stutters, a little bit of blush coloring his cheeks.
Surprised, I say, âHavenât you told me that before?â
Something flickers in his eyes, but itâs gone as soon as it arrives. âItâs different,â he mutters.
âWhat are you two doing there?â a voice asks.
I turn my head to where the sound came from and am surprised when I see Driana and Andre walking towards us.
âSophia and Drake, kissing on a tree,â Andre sings, âK-I-S-S-I-N-G.â
âStop it,â I say, glad for the darkness for it hides the blush creeping on my cheeks. But Iâm not so sure that it hides my blush because I saw Draky blushing a while ago.
Draky fakes a cough, embarrassed. âWhat are you two doing here?â
âI woke up and did not see Sophia beside me,â Driana tells us, âI thought she just went to the bathroom or the kitchen but when she didnât return after a few minutes, I became worried so I came after her. When I didnât find her, I figured to look for her in your room.â
âYou entered my room without my permission?â Draky asks, feign horrified.
âDonât tell me you havenât barged in my room without my permission,â she retorts.
Drake scratches his head, smiling sheepishly.
Driana continues, âWhen I didnât saw either of you in your room, I decided toââ
âWake me,â Andre finishes for her. âAnd then we searched for you two and find you here, kissing on a tree.â
âWeâre not kissing,â I snap.
âAlmost,â he mutters.
âI heard that,â Draky scolds.
He grins, both Driana and him staring at Draky and me with meaningful look.
âTime to sleep,â I say to no one in particular, and start to make my way to the ladder, going down carefully until my feet lands on the ground. I can hear Draky scrambling after me.
âAre you sure you want to sleep?â Andre asks, raising his eyebrows.
âI am sure,â I murmur.
âLetâs go inside now,â Draky says, âItâs unusually cold tonight.â
âI noticed.â Andre smirks, glancing at the jacket Iâm wearing.
I flushed and take the jacket off, giving it back to Draky. âThanks,â I mumble.
âYouâre welcome,â he replies, starting to walk towards their house.
We follow after him. Weâre all quiet until we stop on the second floor landing of their house.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I say, âGood night.â
âNight,â Draky replies.
âSweet dreams,â Driana says, smiling cheekily.
âSleep tight," Andre says amusedly. "Donât let the bed bugs bite.â
And so Driana and I enter her room and lie on her bed.
âSorry about earlier,â I whisper.
âThatâs okay,â she says, âI was just worried so I looked for you.â
âThank you,â I say gratefully.
âWhat are friends are for?â
âYeah. Letâs sleep?â
âOkay.â
Yet no matter how I force myself to sleep, I canât. Adrenaline is still coursing through my veins, replaying the scene in my mind from earlier.
âSoph?â
Startled, I say, âYeah?â I thought sheâs already sleeping. I canât see her face though, because weâre lying back to back.
âDo you like Drake?â
âI. . . um. . . I. . .â
âYou donât have to say anything." I can hear the smile on her voice as she says, âI already know the answer. Good night.â
Does she? Because I donât know it myself.
The ringing of my phone wakes me from my dreamless sleep. How many hours have I been sleeping? It felt like I just closed my eyes a few minutes ago. When I open them, the alarm clockâs light on the bedside table blinks back at me. Itâs just 3 AM in the morning! Who would call in the middle of the night? The person on the other side of the line should have a good reason for waking me up!
Grabbing my phone, I flip it open and murmur, âHello.â I make my voice really soft so as not to wake Driana.
âHello Sophia,â the voice says.
My mind is still cloud with sleep so I canât recognize the personâs voice. What I know is itâs a male. âWho is this?â I mumble.
âIâm back.â
