Chapter 28
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 28: Theo âBriggs,â I ordered, âtell me you found her.â
He made a face. âI found her,â he said shortly. âSheâs alive and sheâs safe. We should leave it at that.â
I didnât like what he was saying. There was something he didnâ t want me to know, and now wasnât the time to try my patience.
Or Kieranâs. He was pacing in my head, ready to command Briggs to tell us everything he knew about Ayla.
âSo she is in Sablemane territory?â I pushed. âDid you talk to her? Do you know where sheâll go next? A rogue wonât be able to stay in pack lands for long.â
âShe will be safe.â
âHow?â I wanted to know what he was keeping from me. âDid you talk to her?â
âWhy does it matter, Theo?â Briggs asked calmly.
âBecause it matters, Briggs.â
He sat there watching me for a few minutes, weighing his words carefully, which didnât put me any more at ease. Finally, he sighed and started to talk.
âAyla is with the Sablemane Pack. She was in a car accident in their territory and was taken to the closest hospital. Her injuries were pretty bad. She was in the hospital for four days.â

Chapter 28: Theo 288 Vouchers So she definitely wasnât healing. Dasha hadnât returned to her.
âTheo, someone has taken an interest in her,â Briggs said.
My focus snapped to attention, my mind now only on my mate.
âWhat do you mean âtaken an interest?â Who?â
âSheâs staying with Alpha Kingston. He made it clear to me that she is under his protection. She wonât be a rogue for much longer,â Briggs said.
âHeâs bringing her into the pack?â I shot up from my seat. âWhy the f*** does he care? Why is she staying with him?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat kind of interest does he have in her?â
âHe didnât exactly share that with me,â Briggs said.
âThen how do you know?â I yelled.
âHis behavior made it pretty obvious. He wants her,â Briggs explained. âAnd he made sure I would give you the message to forget about her and leave her alone.â
âExcuse me?â I hissed. My whole body was tense with the rage and jealousy coursing through me.
âIâm just saying what I witnessed, Theo.â
âBut did you talk to her? How do you know heâs not keeping her there against her will?â My chest was on fire. My wolf was going insane in my head, not knowing which situation would be worse.

O L Chapter 28: Theo âI spoke to her myself,â Briggs said. âI met with her at his private lodge.â
288 Vouchers He saw her. He actually saw her. âHow did she look? Did she seem scared?â
âNo,â Briggs confirmed confidently. âShe was beat the hell up from the accident. But she was perfectly comfortable with her surroundings. She was there by choice.â
Did that mean she was interested in Kingston? Did she want another Alpha?
Kieran was howling. I turned my back to Briggs as I clutched at my chest.
âWhat does it matter, Theo? What are you going to do? Drive her out of Sablemane because someone likes her? Are you really going to be so cruel as to force her to be alone the rest of her life?â
He was getting upset now. And he was right. What was I going to do? Even if I could get her away from Kingston, what would that do? It would make me the bastard Briggs was saying it would. But I still couldnât get the image of someone elseâs hands on Ayla out of my head. Or ignore the way my gut twisted at picturing it.
âThe way I see it, this wraps this whole mess up conveniently,â Briggs said. âYou have enough to put her family at ease and sheâs out of the picture. If you really donât want her, that should be enough.â
âOf course I want her,â I blurted out without thinking. I shook my head. âKieran wants her. Between him and the mate bond, itâs hard to keep a part of me from wanting her.â

O Chapter 28: Theo âOr maybe you just want her anyway.â
288 Vouchers âWhat? No,â I said, pushing my hands through my hair. âEven if I did, it doesnât change who she is or what sheâs done.â
âAnd who is that, Theo?â Briggs asked, crossing his arms over his chest. âBecause I have to say, the woman I met wasnât the same person weâve been told about.â
I threw myself back in my armchair.
âHas Kylee been living up to who you thought she was?â Briggs asked gently. âI heard she was MIA when everything was going down today.â
âIâve already addressed that with her,â I said. âSheâs young. She knows she made a mistake.â
âHave you?â
His question wasnât accusatory. It wasnât lined with anger or disappointment. It was genuine and full of concern and caring. A lump formed in my throat.
âI donât know anymore,â I answered.
âDo you want to talk it through?â
I rubbed my hands over my face. This had turned into such a mess. And it hurt like hell.
âI guess I felt ambushed,â I finally said.
âWhen?â
âWhen I met Ayla,â I told him. âI was there with the woman I had just announced would be my chosen mate and Luna. I 4/6 Chapter 28: Theo 1288 (Vouchers was meeting her family for the first time. We hadnât been in the house for two minutes and there she was.â
âAyla?â Briggs asked.
I nodded. âShe was incredible, Briggs. For a minute, I... I donât know. It was like I felt complete. But then I realized that she was Kyleeâs sister.â
âBut why reject her in the first place, Theo? Why not talk to her first? Kylee would have gotten over it eventually. Aylaâs your fated mate. Itâs not like...â
âShe didnât want me, Briggs,â I rushed out. âShe didnât want me. So I made things easier for all of us.â
âWait,â Briggs said. âTheo, are you saying you rejected her just so she couldnât reject you first?â
I didnât respond.
âFuck, Theo. Of all the times for your stupid pride.â
âIt wasnât about pride, Briggs. I thought it would hurt less if | made the decision. That Iâd be able to move on knowing I chose to walk away, rather than knowing she did.â
âBut you didnât know that she would,â Briggs yelled, jumping to his feet. âYou have no idea what her reasons were for accepting the rejection. What about when you went back? What exactly triggered her to cut her ties?â
âI told her what Kylee told us about her. It hurt her â deeply.â
âWell, guilt can do that. Even if Ayla never intentionally hurt Kylee, finding out the consequences of your actions can still be painful,â Briggs said, pacing the floor.

O T 6/6 Chapter 28: Theo 288 Vouchers I closed my eyes, swallowing the lump forming in my throat again. I had to face what I had been ignoring since that day.
âWhat?â Briggs asked.
âThere was no guilt in her eyes, Briggs,â I said quietly. âThere was no shame. Just... pain, and confusion, and sadness. She didnât understand, Briggs. She didnât understand why Kylee would say those things.â
âTheo, I told you we didnât know everything.â Briggs returned to his seat. âI think itâs time we looked further into Ayla.â
