Chapter 15
Truth, Lies and Deception (the boyband series)
The bus was finally on its way to the next town when all the members, complete with family, friends and bodyguards were settled in. Rick made sure heâd introduced Abigail to everyone on the bus so sheâd be satisfied.
Now, Abigail sat by herself on one of the sofas on the huge tour bus while Rick spoke to a tall, huge dark-skinned man who Abigail had been introduced to as Tony, Rickâs bodyguard. Rick spotted her then and after mumbling a few words to Tony, walked over to join her.
She shifted on the sofa so he could sit and not be too close to her.
âWhy are you sitting here all by yourself?â he asked, facing her.
She avoided looking at him.
âIâm just observing.â She told him looking straight ahead where some of the other group members and their friends were gathered playing a game of cards.
"What? My friends?â he asked following her gaze. âI told you, you donât have to worry about them. Iâm sure none of them are behind this.â
She did look at him then.
âWhy donât you do me a favour?â she said, âWhy donât you just be the pop star and let me do my job of protecting you?â
Instead of making him mad as sheâd intended, he smiled.
âProtecting me?â he asked, âSo does that mean youâre my new bodyguard, detective?â he teased.
She folded her arms as she turned towards him.
âYouâve already got a bodyguard.â She said, âAnd would you stop calling me that. Someone might hear you.â She nodded towards the group.
âNo oneâs gonna hear me.â He said, but lowering his voice anyway, âWhy donât you go over there and join them?â
Abigail gave him a surprised look.
âI canât.â she stuttered, âI mean, Iâm here to do a job, Rick, not have fun.â
âBut this was supposed to be your vacation, why canât you do both?â he asked her.
âBecause itâs not my vacation.â She told him firmly.
âYouâre taking this case seriously.â He said looking away from her.
âAnd youâre not. I have to say, for someone who has been threatened, youâre rather relaxed.â
âMaybe because Iâve realized that if I took this too seriously, Iâd be too worried to think about anything else.â He stated, returning her gaze. âBesides, I have to admit, you make me feel safe.â
Abigailâs eyebrows shot up in surprise and she had to say she was taken aback by his announcement.
âI make you feel safe?â she asked. âHow is that?â
He shrugged.
âI guess because I know youâre here to help me and thatâs exactly what youâre doing. No strings attached and well, because youâre a friend of Jasonâs, I trust you.â He said softly.
She shook her head disapprovingly.
âYou shouldnât trust anyone you donât know. No matter what the circumstances.â
âI guess youâre right.â He agreed, âSo tell me about you.â
âExcuse me?â
âYou just said I shouldnât trust anyone I donât know.â He replied, âAnd I want to trust you.â
âRick, you can trust me. I didnât mean that comment in relation to us.â She clarified. âI just meant that you shouldnât trust people so easily. It could get you into a lot of trouble, especially in your position.â
âI already know that. Iâm not a little boy, detective.â He said softly, looking at her.
Since Abigail had more than noticed that, she didnât comment.
âWhy do I get the feeling youâre avoiding that topic?â he asked her.
âWhat topic?â
âTalking about yourself.â He replied.
âBecause itâs not important.â
âYes it is.â He countered.
âThis is all about you, Rick. This has nothing to do with me. Why canât we leave it at that?â she asked him.
âBecause thatâs not fair. Youâre getting to know all about me. Youâre getting to be part of my life.â
âFor two weeks.â She stated.
He ignored her.
âAnd what am I getting in return?â he asked.
âYour life!â Abigail shot back, âExactly the way you want it.â
Rick laughed and some of the others who were a good distance away, looked at them and smiled, before returning to their game.
âThatâs something we have to talk about.â She told him.
âWhat? My life?â when she nodded, he continued, âWhat do you want to know?â
âEverythingâ
He raised his eyebrows and grinned slyly.
âEverything?â
She caught his expression and rolled her eyes.
âOkay, just the important stuff.â
Rick was about to reply when Tony walked up to them.
âWeâre almost there.â Tony informed them and when Rick nodded, he left.
âIt looks like weâre going to have to continue this discussion later.â Rick said disappointed.
âI canât wait.â Abigail replied sarcastically.
Rick smiled at her.
âNeither can I.â
