Chapter 10
Truth, Lies and Deception (the boyband series)
The Bayside Boys had postponed the nightâs concert to another day that was put at the back end of the tour. After sorting out the problems at the concert, Rick was finally back at the hotel two hours later.
He slipped his key card into the slot on the door and walked in, shutting the door securely behind him. He was about to let out a sigh of relief that his room was just as he left it when he spotted something strange on his bed.
He walked closer to the bed and spotted one of the pillows tied to the bars of the bed with, he noticed, the same kind of rope that held the lights that came loose that night. He also noticed, with disgust, that someone had stuck a picture of him on the pillow that was tied to the bed.
Someone had deliberately cut the lights loose! He couldnât wait to let Abigail know and even rub it in her face that she was wrong, the smartass! Instead, he picked up the phone and dialled Jasonâs number. He picked up on the third ring.
âHello?â Jasonâs sleepy voice said into the receiver.
âJason, itâs Rick.â
âRick?â Jason asked surprised, âWhat time is it?â
âJust after one.â Rick answered, âLook Jason, have you spoken to Abigail yet?â
âNo I havenât. I just came home a while ago and went straight to bed.â He told Rick.
âOh. Well, I hope youâre wide awake because Iâve got some stuff to talk to you about.â Rick said.
âWhatâs wrong?â Jason asked, sitting up in bed and turning on the bedside lamp. He heard Rick sigh heavily into the phone.
âI was onstage tonight when halfway through the show, some of the stage lights fell and hit me on my shoulder. Good thing I saw Abigail trying to warn me and ended up moving forward instead of staying where I was otherwise my injury would have been worse.â Rick explained.
Jason seemed to ponder this for a moment.
âWhat did Abby say?â he asked Rick.âIâm sure she must have investigated it.â
âShe did. She said she talked to the guy that was sent to check it out and that he said that the rope burst from the weight of the lights and she believes him.â Rick stated.
âBut you donât .âJason queried.
âOf course I donât!â Rick said heatedly. âAfter everythingâs that been happening, how can I?â he asked Jason.
âYou think that someone set those lights loose above you on purpose?â Jason asked him.
âYup. I think it was cut.â Rick said firmly, âI mean, it happened when I was right under the lights, Jason. It had to be deliberate.â
âBut Abby doesnât believe that it is?â he asked Rick, he thought that to be strange. He thought she would have agreed with Rick given the circumstances.
âNo she doesnât.â Rick said, âBut then she doesnât know about this, just now when I walked into my room, I saw one of the pillows on my bed tied to the bed with the same rope they used to hold the lights and there was a picture of ME on the pillow!â he added almost hysterically. âNow tell me itâs not deliberate!â he challenged Jason.
âI canât argue with you about that.â Jason said beginning to wonder if this was part of the practical joke the guys of BBKAY were playing on the youngest Bayside Boy. If it was, he was going to have some serious yelling to do, it was beginning to get to him. If not, he wasnât sure how he was going to handle it. He was pretty busy with his own case as is without one of his best friends getting into trouble.
âSo Abby doesnât know about the pillow incident?â he asked Rick.
âNo, she left back at the concert venue.â Rick explained, âWhat? Did you expect her to come back here with me?â he added with a smirk.
âWell, I know you Mr. Camden and Abby-â
âOkay, okay, Iâve heard it enough times now.â Rick said quickly stopping him, âWhy are you calling her Abby? Isnât she Detective Rains? And all night she kept calling you Jason. Whatâs going on? Are you two dating?â he asked curious.
âWhy?â Jason asked with a smile, âYou like her?â
âDoes it matter?â he rushed out, âAre you?â
Jason laughed taking that as a yes, he knew it would happen.
âWe used to date.â He told Rick, âA few months back, but we both realized that it wouldnât work out between us. We couldnât have both a personal and professional relationship. But we are pretty good friends though. Sheâs beautiful isnât she?â he slipped it in so smoothly, it took a moment for Rick to react.
âSheâs gorgeous.â Rick replied honestly. âI donât know how your department does any work with her around.â
Jason chuckled. âIt is difficult. She did cause quite a commotion the first few months she came to the precinct.â
âI can see why.â Rick said, âThanks so much for sending her to me.â
âRick, you do know that sheâs not on this case right? She just filled in for me tonight because I had to work.â Jason informed him, âSo donât get too excited.â
Rick actually pouted on the other end of the line.
âCanât I keep her?â Rick asked, âArenât you busy with your case?â
âI am actually.â Jason said as if in thought, âBut Rick, I canât do that. Sheâs on vacation for the next two weeks.â
âWhat!â Rick cried disappointed, he was actually beginning to think that something good was going to come from all this.
âSorry.â Jason murmured.
âSo what are you going to do?â he asked, âWeâre leaving LA tomorrow afternoon.â
âI donât know Rick. What do you suggest I do?â
Rick thought about it for a moment, before a huge smile crossed his face.
âIâve got an idea.â He said excitedly. âWhy donât you get Abby to come on tour with me?â
âWhat!â
âWait, Iâm not done! She can work, investigate this stalker thing while pretending to be my girlfriend. That way, we can figure out whoâs after me and keep it on the DL at the same time!â Rick explained proud of his idea.
âAnd you get to spend some time with her.â Jason finished for him.
âThe thought never crossed my mind.â Rick said.
âRight.â
âDo I sense some jealousy here?â he asked Jason.
âJealousy? Of course not Rick. Abby and I have been over for a long time now. If you ask her, sheâll tell you we were never together.â Jason stated.
âSo you donât mind?â Rick asked cautiously, âIf we like, started dating?â
âYou two are adults. You donât need my permission. Do what you want.â
âCool. Thanks man.â
âI didnât approve of your idea, Rick.â Jason told him then.
âOh come on Jas! Tell me itâs not a good idea.â Rick challenged.
âItâs not that.â Jason said firmly, âI just donât want her to get hurt.â
âI would never hurt her!â Rick protested.
âMaybe not intentionally.â Jason said.
âWhat do you mean?â Rick asked, his voice hard.
âI know you Rick. Iâve known you for a long time. Iâve even seen you myself with those other girls.â Jason reminded him, âI donât want Abby to be like those.â
âShe wonât Jason. Trust me. I wonât hurt her.â Rick promised.
âGood. Beause Iâm a COP you know.â
âI know, you never let me forget.â Rick said. âSo? Are you gonna help me out?â
âIâll think about it.â
