Mission Martin

The following week Nika spent as much time as she could, planning on what to do to get her ex-girlfriend, Kate Martin back. Nika fucked it up big time and she knew that. But she was willing to do whatever it took to get her girl back. Her princess.

Nika knew Kate was a very forgiving person even when she felt they didn't deserve her forgiveness. Nika was just hoping, even if it took 5 years, for Kate to forgive her and go into a relationship with her again. But Nika couldn't wait that long. She just didn't have the patience. She wanted Kate back now and never let her go ever again.

The Croatian was pretty new to this whole 'asking for forgiveness' thing. She was never one to ask for it because she felt the person deserved whatever Nika gave or did to them. But this time around, it was different. Kate was somebody she so deeply cared about. The only good thing in this hell hole of a world. Nika knew she couldn't plan getting Kate back all by herself so she knew that she urgently had to tell somebody. That person was going to be her twin, Paige.

Paige was currently in the apartment, same as Nika, so Nika made her way over towards Paige's door. "Hey twin can you-" When Nika opened Paige's door, she was greeted by Paige and Azzi kissing very hot and heavy on the bed.

"Yo what the fuck Nika! Can me and my girlfriend have some privacy over here? Knock next time because you could've been walking into something way more eye blinding." Paige looked over at Nika who looked surprised with a hint of embarrassment on her face from the interaction. "But what's up? What do you need?"

Paige and Azzi sat up leaning against the bed frame, arm draped over Azzi's shoulders as Paige licked her lips waiting for the Croatian to begin speaking.

"Okay well uhm. I should've expected Azzi to be here, love you girl, but uhm I have something to say that both of you guys may not like." Nika stopped leaning against the door frame, walking closer towards Paige's bed, flipping her hair in the process. "I need you guys to help me plan getting Kate back."

The two girls on the bed were stunned from what they had just heard. "Uhm Nika, me and Paige really do love you but are you sure that trying to get Kate back is a good idea? You really broke her heart and I know you know that. Plus, what if she's talking to somebody else?"

Nika shook her head in response to Azzi's question. "I know I broke her heart but I would do anything to mend it again. Kate knows we have too much history in just one year to let it all go to waste. And I know she's not talking to anyone she told me at dinner yesterday."

Both Paige and Azzi immediately stopped leaning against the backboard with their mouths agape. "Wait twin, you and Kate had dinner yesterday?!"

"Uhm-look stop this isn't about the dinner mind your own damn business. But is there something you guys know that I don't?"

Paige and Azzi looked at each other for a moment. They didn't want to assume too much but from what they've gathered at the party the other night, it seemed like Ice and Kate had a little something going on. If Kate didn't mention it at the dinner, no way were Paige and Azzi going to betray her like that.

"Us? Pfff you're crazy twin. Me and Azzi spend all of our days together. We be getting all your names confused with one another. If there was something that we know you would've wanted to know about, we would've told you." Paige looked at Azzi then back at Nika. "So we will help you get Kate back but you have to stop letting your anger out on poor KK and targeting her during our weekly dodgeball games."

Nika rolled her eyes in response. "Fine. Thank you guys." And with that Nika left the room. As soon as the door shut, Paige was left smirking until Azzi lightly slapped her on the arm.

"Seriously what the fuck P. You are literally the worst person at lying, I don't know how Nika bought into that and are we seriously going to help Nika get Kate back knowing damn well that her and Ice might be pursuing something?"

"Nika's my twin Az, I do everything with her. I love you so much baby and we all know you love me so please, can we just help Nika get Kate back?"

"You can. I don't want to partake in whatever this might turn into." Azzi stood up and kissed Paige on the cheek. "I love you too baby. Even if you do stupid shit like this."

Paige sighed as she saw her girlfriend exiting the room, leaving Paige to be alone with her thoughts. Paige wasn't doing anything wrong was she? She was only trying to help her best friend get her ex back even though she knows that her and Ice may have something going on.

Nika and Paige were a dynamic duo though. Whatever one was going through, the other was going through it as well. Besides, what does the rest of the team have to say about this plan? Maybe they would all like it too.

Today the girls had the day off and practice the next day wasn't until later in the evening. Whenever the schedule looks like this, the girls all plan to hang out together. It seemed like fate to Nika because today was the perfect day to tell the rest of the Huskies about her plan.

It was now around dinner time and everyone began coming into Nika, Paige, and Aaliyah's apartment. Despite Paige helping in on the plan, Nika spent the whole day planning while Paige only helped after she died and was waiting to go back to the lobby in Fortnite.

Nika really didn't need that many people to help with her plan. She could've done it alone if she wanted to. But everyone knows that phrase. 'the more, the better.' With more people helping in on the plan, it opened Nika up to many more opportunities or ideas that might never come across her mind.

"Alright alright everyone shut up and settle down." Nika was currently standing on the coffee table in the living room, getting déjà vu from when she announced Kate being her girlfriend way back in Myrtle Beach.

Her eyes scanned around the room seeing KK and Aaliyah joking and laughing with each other but those laughs quickly came to a stop when they noticed the Croatian's eyes stare right into their souls. Everyone was now silent and all eyes were on Nika. Thoughts kept running through her head thinking that maybe this is a bad idea, but it was too late now.

"So before I start, I just want to say that I don't wanna hear a peep come out of any of your mouths until I'm done talking. Capeesh?" Everyone nodded. "Good. So I am proposing an idea or plan to you all that I really need your guy's help on."

Nika took one more glance around the room, hesitating. "I need your guy's help to get my get Kate back. I've been planning all day long. I am willing to do whatever I need to do in order to get Kate back. I'm calling it...Mission Martin."

Across the room there were hints of laughs, and audible gasps. One of the laughs, coming from Aaliyah. "Hold the phone Nika. You're trying to get Kate back after you fucked it up? I'm a fan of the plan but I feel like it's unlikely for Kate to take you back. At least right now. Did anyone make up their mind if they're on board with this plan or not?"

"Well I asked Paige and Azzi before and Paige is on board." Paige glared at Nika, shaking her head 'no' at Nika exposing her. Nika's eyes scanned across the room. Nika tried to count who was on board but she lost count because of all of the movement happening in such a dense spot.

"Okay okay. Guys stop moving I'm just going to ask you guys all individually if you are with the plan. And I'm not taking any of that 'give me some time' bullshit because time is what we're limited on. Okay well I think I saw KK and Jana's heads shaking 'yes' so you guys are on board with helping me?"

"Girly pop, we all know you and Kate are the cutest gays out there. No offense to Paige and Azzi obviously. The fandom needs to see you two be back and be lovey dovey. I will help you until I die. Not saying its going to take you years to get Kate back but y'know." KK looked around the room realizing she might've said more than was necessary.

"Yes I'm on board with the plan too. That's...that's all you had to say KK." KK glared at Jana who received a gathering of laughter from the comment she made.

"Okay what about you Aubrey?"

Aubrey grabbed a pillow and pulled it close towards her chest. She knew Nika only wanted one answer but Aubrey wasn't going to sit here and lie. "In all honesty Nika, I love Kate and I think she's super genuine, truthful, and deserves only the best. You really broke her heart and I'm glad you realize your mistakes but I don't want to be a part of this if things do go South between you and her again."

This was shocking for Nika to hear. "Wow. Okay, I totally didn't expect that from you."

Aubrey moved the pillow in front of her face, scared shitless. "Please don't hurt me Nika. I'm sorry, just please let me live. I'm too young to die."

"I'm not going to hit you Aubrey don't worry. You said that in a hurtful, but also respectful way so I really appreciate that. If that's what you think then that's what you think."

Nika kept asking other teammates like it was an interrogation. She asked Ayanna who was on board with the plan, and Caroline and Ines who didn't want any partake in the plan, for the same reasons Aubrey didn't want to. The next person Nika would be asking though, well, her answer might be a little different."

"Ice? What about you?"

Somehow, the room seemed to get more quiet than it already was. Paige and Azzi blankly stared at each other unsure of what was about to happen next. If Ice and Kate were really getting to know each other on a deeper level, well then, things were about to get real messy, real fast.

Ice looked around the room for a moment before forwarding her eyes towards Nika's. Ice wasn't scared of Nika at all. She was 6'3 and the Croatian was 5'11. Not that height matters because Nika can switch but Ice would definitely have an advantage.

"Okay so let me get this straight...You broke up with Kate because you needed physical touch and Kate was halfway across the country from you. You quite literally shattered her heart in the middle of fucking Minnesota after she drove 4 hours to see you. Then, you have the audacity to immediately go and fuck your ex-boyfriend who you broke up with because you wanted Kate? And you're here asking me if I want to help you get her back?"

Across the room, jaws were dropped to the floor. There were mumbles of 'oh shit' and a slightly offended Paige after Ice just dissed her home state saying 'the middle of Minnesota.' Ice was now standing up, having not missed a beat on her speech. Nika's jaw was now clenched and her knuckles grew to grow white.

Nika scoffed. "Excuse me Ice? What the fuck makes you think you have the audacity to say all of that?"

"Well Nika, you asked a question. I answered."

Nika took a step closer to Ice, Ice standing her ground staring down at the very furious Croatian. "You think that I don't realize my past mistakes? Do you not see me standing here trying to make things better or are you just a fucking blind bitch?"

"Now Nika don't say-"

"Shut the fuck up Paige. What the fuck makes you think its okay too just say that all out loud? Huh? It's none of your goddamn business Ice so why the fuck do you care?"

Ice took a step towards Nika, looking her up and down. "Well considering she was in my bed the other night, I'm pretty sure it is my business."

Nika slightly laughed out loud and broke eye contact with Ice. Out of nowhere, Nika tried to swing at Ice's face but Ice moved her head back just in time as the other UConn girls began, trying to hold Nika back.

Nika began cursing Ice out in Croatian but Ice's only response was a smirk as she sat back down and crossed her arms.

Ice said what she said about Kate being in her bed to just piss Nika off. Ice and Kate were getting closer and did seem to be more than friends but, both of them knew that Kate just needed somebody to be around and comfort her. Ice did like Kate but not to a point where she couldn't see herself with anybody else. If Kate needed someone to feel comfort with, then Ice was going to be there for her.

The next morning came quickly and Nika could still feel the anger built up inside of her. The words Ice said stuck in Nika's mind like glue. They seemed to be the only things that Nika was able to think about and she hated it.

Nika stripped off her shorts and put on black sweatpants and the hoodie that Kate returned back to her. Kate's favorite one. Nika wore the sweatshirt because the scent was now Kate and Nika wanted to feel as close to Kate as she possibly could.

Kate wasn't even present when she returned the hoodie back. It was delivered in a box with a tiny card that just said 'Here." But Nika saw a damp tiny spot on the card that Nika assumed was a teardrop. As for all of the other sweatshirts Nika gave Kate, Kate still had them all.

Nika put on her favorite pair of basketball shoes and made her way to the basketball courts and gym. The only two things that always helped her both mental health and physical health.

Nika decided to put some shots up first before heading to the gym. Nika put her airpods in and stretched first. After stretching, Nika made her way to the three point line because the past few games her shot hasn't been as accurate as it used to be.

She decided to not grab the basketball rebounder attachment from the storage room and instead try and work on getting her own rebounds instead. Playing basketball just made Nika feel some type of way. It was a distraction, it was an escape. Nika started playing on the courts back in Croatia alone, then with Hana, even years later playing at the Basketball Capital of the World, Nika finds herself still practicing alone.

As time went by, the shots were going in more consistently. Some could argue that it was only because she had a good song on, but either way, the consistent shots didn't go unnoticed.

"Aw hell yea Nika." Paige was walking on to the courts as she clapped her hands. Nika just stood in place with one hand holding her basketball to her side and her other hand on her chin.

"How the fuck did you know I was here?"

"You're my twin. We have twin telepathy. I know that the courts are where you go when you feel down or you're angry."

"Yea well maybe I wouldn't be angry if Ice wouldn't be such a bitch." Paige snatched the ball from Nika's hand and laughed and pointed her finger at a very annoyed Nika.

"Twin, twin, twin, come to the benches with me. Let Momma P talk to you."

Nika sighed and as much as Nika wanted to tell Paige to fuck off and let her practice, she knew Paige wouldn't give up and some talk time with the blonde is something Nika really could've used currently.

Paige and Nika hadn't talked to each other since the incident last night. This was the longest they have gone without speaking in a long time. Paige had tried to knock on Nika's door a few times but could always hear a shoe get thrown at the door in return.

After this fight, Ice, Caroline, Ayanna, Azzi, and Ines decided it was best for them all to leave before things got worse. Nika was still fuming so Paige asked the rest of the group who was on with the plan and who wasn't. Everyone else was on board except Ashlynn.

The awkwardness in the room seemed to go away once Nika stormed off to her room, not going out of it until this morning. She only had a few snacks from Croatia in her room because she didn't want anybody else eating them because she knew how much everybody else loved them. Her night was spent reminiscing and looking back on videos of her and Kate.

Outside of her room, the girls ordered Wingstop and Insomnia cookies. They did a whole Jaws movie marathon, KK saying she wasn't going to be scared one bit but screamed every time somebody was going into the water. It wasn't that the movies were really scary, it was more so because of how tense they were.

Nika was able to drown out the noise of the yelling girls through her airpods though. Although this time, her airpods weren't enough to drown out Paige's voice.

"So how do you feel about last night? You know with Ice." Paige leaned forward, leaning her chin on her hands.

"I fucking hate that girl so much right now, you have no idea. That shit she said in front of the whole team was so fucking rude of her. And how she had the audacity to try and call me out or embarrass me. I don't know how I'm going to play with her this season."

"Well Nika she wasn't entirely wrong-"

"Oh and don't even get me started on her saying that Kate has been in her bed. I want to beat Isuneh Brady to the ground and make sure it hurts for her to walk."

Paige put one of her hands on Nika's knee trying to signal to the girl to let her talk. "You can't hate Ice for what she said even if it is true. Kate's moved on or is moving on and I know you don't want her to. Maybe this is all a test, twin. If you just play it cool, Kate's going to come back to you. Don't scare her off."

"I get that but Ice is my friend and then she goes and sleeps in the same bed as Kate when she knows how in love I am with Kate?"

Paige jumped back. "Woah hold up twin. What you just say?"

"I mean it's pretty obvious how in love with Kate I am. I just never got the chance to say it to her because I fucked everything up." Nika paused for a moment as Paige couldn't get the smile off of her face. "Are you sure you didn't know about Ice and Kate? Because I had no idea."

"You and I both know that Ice likes to keep her personal life private. If there was anything that had to do with Kate, I would've told you." Paige felt a little guilty for lying to Nika but she had to do what had to be done. Paige wasn't going to risk getting beat up for lying to the Croatian. She could deal with the consequences later.

"So...about you and Kate having dinner the other night." Paige smirked as Nika put her hand on Paige's face as they both began to laugh.

"Oh shut up Paige. Now's not the time for this."

Nika stared down at the ground looking like she regretted every decision she has ever made in her life. "Don't get down on yourself for it twin. We all know it's you and Kate in the end and nothing could ever compare." Paige stood up and made her way to the exit of the gym.

The music on Nika's phone started to play again as she went back on the court, this time practicing her free throws. 2 sets of 100 so in total she was about to do 200 free throw attempts. She also believed free throws was a big area where she could focus on and continue to build.

After spending about 3 hours total on the basketball court and in the gym, Nika decided to go out for lunch with KK at a local fast food place. KK could go on a yap session for hours and a distraction was exactly what Nika needed right now. The last time the two privately spoke to each other in person was just about 2 weeks ago. Even though it was 2 weeks, it still seemed like the two had so much to catch up on.

After eating lunch, they went back to Nika's apartment and KK was eager to show Nika a TV show called 'Welcome to Eden.' It was a Spanish show and apparently KK's guilty pleasure was TV shows in Spanish. The show became interesting to Nika not even 5 minutes in. It was hard for her to come across a show like that anymore.

Nika and KK were halfway through episode 2 when Nika decided to scroll on Instagram for a minute. She went to Kate's profile to see if posted anything new and to Nika's surprise she did. Kate had posted on her story and as soon as Nika's fingers tapped on the icon, her heart dropped.
