Chapter 2

Interview

For Whatever It's Worth

"We are here with Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin after their win against Tennessee. These two girls who stand before me had led the team to a win after a very close game. Caitlin with 34 points and Kate with 28. So tell me, although it was a very slow start in the beginning, what happened during halftime that gave you guys a spark to go on some amazing runs?" The interviewer asked.

Kate and Caitlin have been bestfriends for almost three years now. They were an unstoppable duo and whatever one of them was doing, the other was probably doing it as well. They have done so many interviews together that it basically became a routine for them. Caitlin would always answer the first question, and if Kate had something to add-on, she would. Despite being best friends, Caitlin and Kate were exact opposites. Caitlin was more socially outgoing while Kate was a little more anti-social.

With a very unsteady breath, Caitlin began to answer the interviewer.

"Well I think Coach Bluder's halftime speech always gets us going" They all laughed. "Coach is very good at waking us up when we deeply need it. I also think missed shots were a big thing, especially for me. There were shots that I should've easily been able to get in that I missed in the first half, so I made sure not to make those past mistakes for the second half."

"Thank you so much Caitlin, and what about you Kate?"

"I agree with pretty much everything Caitlin said you know, but there were also so many turnovers that shouldn't have happened but, it's life. In the end we made it out alive and got the dub so uhm yea." Kate explained. Kate was always impressed with the way Caitlin always had a different answer although being asked the same question so many times. On the other hand Kate always said the same answer but why should she change it if it's true?

"Thank you as well Kate. Now in a week you guys will be facing off against UConn, and I know that this is a very anticipated game for all the fans out there. So tell me, what would you change for the next game that you didn't do this game as it's the last game of the regular season before March Madness comes?"

Once again, Caitlin had no problem answering this question.

"I think we really need to work more on our defense. Nika Mühl is one of the greatest defensive players in college basketball right now, but if Kate defends her I don't think it will be as much of an issue as it needs to be because as much as Kate won't admit it, she is also one of the greatest defenders in the game."

"And what do you guys plan to do against Paige Bueckers?"

"Ah Paige man, well she's pretty unstoppable. Paige is incredible so yea she definitely will be a struggle to play against on both offense and defense. We've played against UConn many times before and they're all great players and our friends but, we can't seem to crack the code on Paige."

"You said you and the UConn team are friends. More as basketball friends or outside of basketball too?"

"Well after the Championship is done, the Iowa team and the UConn women's basketball team will be spending a month together in a rented beach house in Myrtle Beach. So will be pretty exciting."

"So you guys all must be really close then."

"Yea most of us are but Kate, not really-"

"Yea I mean they all seem super nice. I talk to a few of them but I'm not as close with them as the rest of the team is." Kate chimes in. "It should definitely be exciting though and so there's a good chance I'll become very close friends with the whole team."

"Okay well I don't want to bore you guys with any more questions, but thank you for the talk!" The interviewer waves at the camera signaling for the cameraman to turn it off.

Kate and Caitlin both say thank you and start heading their way to the locker rooms. Not sure about Caitlin, but to say Kate was nervous for this UConn game would definitely be an understatement. Whenever she played against UConn, some nerves always seemed to kick in that have never occurred while playing other teams. Bluder had told her there's a good chance she would have to be guarding Nika Mühl which didn't help her as Nika was known as the 'Secretary of Defense.' Whenever she had guarded Nika, she always felt nervous and she didn't know why. All Kate knew now though, is that if she wanted to win, she would have to work very, very hard.
