In the Brooke residence, Eve was kneeling on the ground, sobbing. She was crying so hard that she was almost out of breath.
âDo you want me dead, huh?â Julius was so angry that his chest was heaving. â200,000 was gone, just like that! If I had known I wouldnât have let you have that art exhibition! From tomorrow onward, you are not allowed to take one step out of this mansion!â
Eve crawled over on her knees with tears all over her face and said, âDad, I was framed! That man just appeared out of nowhere! Someone framed me! Someone wanted to hurt me!â
âIf youâre afraid of someone framing you, you shouldnât have copied! Do you know what this is called? Thievery!â It was better for her not to explain at all because Julius became even more furious after that. âHave you learned nothing at school? Do you even know what youâre doing?â
One of his daughters was mentally unstable and needed medicine just to survive.
His other daughter cheated with her own sisterâs fiancé and opened her own art exhibition using plagiarized works.
These were the Brooke familyâs daughters? How would others view him from now on?!
âDad, itâs my fault! Iâm wrong! I wonât do it ever againâ¦â Eveâs eyes were already badly swollen as she grabbed his leg and begged. âDad, itâs true⦠Clarence already promised that he would marry meâ¦â
Julius could no longer contain his anger and he kicked Eve away as he yelled, âThe Oaks already told you to stay at home. Now that this has happened, do you think the Oaks would still allow Clarence to marry you? You must be delirious!â
When Flora saw that, she quickly went over and lightly patted on Juliusâs chest. âThe Oaks already said that as long as we invest 50 million into their new project, they would allow Clarence to marry Eve and make her the proper wife!â
Julius said angrily, âFlora, Eve has gone mad, and so have you?â
He had already checked that investment. The chances of success and failure were both about 50%.
His philosophy of doing business was to be steady and not to be too aggressive. How was he supposed to invest in something that had a 50% chance of failure?
Flora forced herself to be patient, then switched to a softer tone and said, âHusband, now that Eveâs reputation is completely gone, even normal families wouldnât want her. You wouldnât know as you didnât read what was written on the message board. Thereâs no place for Eve in Auburn anymore. The Oak family is Eveâs best and only chance.â
Julius was so outraged that his fingers were trembling. He pointed at Flora for a long moment before he finally formed a full sentence, âIâm warning you. Forget about the Oaks! I donât care what kind of agreement you have reached with the Oaks, I will not invest in this project! Forget about this!â
Although he was known to have a bad temper and didnât smile, this was the first time he was so angry.
âAnd you!â Julius looked at Eve. âIf you dare to contact anyone from the Oaks, donât call me Dad ever again!â
Eve stood rooted to the ground, with her eyes red.
âDadâ¦â
Julius walked away as if he hadnât heard her and then closed the door with a bang.
The reason that he was angry was not only because of Eve disgracing herself in the art exhibition and the money he lost.
The main reason was that they were still thinking of the Oak family.
So what if she could really become Clarenceâs wife?
Eve was going to be humiliated forever, and the entire Brooke family would be looked down upon by the Oaks as well.
How could his daughter fall to this point, that he had to pay for her to be wed off to another?
No, he would not allow Clarence to marry Eve.
Outside the studies, the crying from the mother and daughter made him even more agitated.
At night, Julius finally opened the door.
Flora lay on the sofa in the living room. While she was no longer young, her curves were still quite tempting.
As moonlight showered her face, the tears on her face had made Julius less unhappy.
This woman had been with him for so many years. Even if she didnât achieve much, she still did a lot for him.
Not to mention that she had suffered much as well.
When he thought of that, Julius woke her up in a much softer manner. âFlora, wake up. Go to sleep in the room!â
Flora slowly opened her eyes and then sat up as she looked at Julius. She suddenly sobbed and said, âDo you hate both of us already? If you do, Eve and I can move out right now.â
The way she spoke softened his heart and all he could do was sigh. âWeâre still a family. Whatâs the use of saying things like that?! Whereâs Eve?â
Flora was stunned. âShe was here just nowâ¦â
Julius stood up and walked towards Eveâs room. âEve? Eve?â
He knocked at the door, but no one responded from inside.
He pushed the door, but there was no one inside.
Julius frowned and said, âMrs. Jones, have you seen Eve?â
Mrs. Jones then pointed at the bathroom and said, âSheâs been inside for a long time. She still hasnât come out?â
Julius had a bad feeling and quickly ran into the bathroom. âEve! Eve! Open up!â
There was no sound coming from the inside, even Flora chased after him and said, âHusband, what is it? What happened?â
They gathered people to knock down the bathroom door, and the color of blood had almost filled up the entire bathtub.
Eve was wearing her white pajamas as she quietly lay in it with her eyes closed.
âQuick! Call Dr. Baker! Tell him to come here immediately!â Julius said as he grabbed Eve out of the bathtub. She was still breathing, and so he didnât hesitate to bring her back to her room and stop her bleeding.
Flora was standing behind him, revealing a terrifying smile as she watched his figure.
Very quickly, Dr. Martin Baker arrived at the mansion with his medical kit.
âIt was lucky that she was discovered early. Sheâs not in any immediate danger,â Dr. Baker said as he cleaned up the wound and prepared the drip. Only then did he raise his head and look at Julius, saying, âSheâll need to rest for quite some time.â
Flora pounced towards Eve, holding her hand to the point where her cry was silent. She looked extremely pitiful.
Julius pointed outside. Dr. Baker knew what he meant and followed him down the stairs after he packed up his medical kit.
âMr. Brooke, you can be upfront with me.â
âThereâs a lot happening in my family. Please keep what happened tonight a secret.â
âUnderstood. But with Ms. Brookeâs condition, I think itâs best to send her to the hospital.â
Julius looked at the bright room upstairs and said, âNo need. I would like to thank you in advance for having to come here and change the drip for Eve every day.â
And then, he passed a card into Dr. Bakerâs hand. âPlease.â
Dr. Baker refused that card without showing any visible emotion. âIâm only doing what Iâm supposed to. Donât worry, Mr. Brooke. My lips are sealed.â
If he accepted it and something happened, Julius would no doubt blame it on him.
If that were the case, it was better for him not to accept it in the first place.
Julius couldnât convince him due to his stubbornness, and he had no choice but to let him go.
In the room, Eve slowly opened her eyes and saw her mother who was by her side nod slightly towards her. There was a smirk in those eyes..
