Archangel’s Ascension: Chapter 47
Archangel’s Ascension (The Guild Hunter Series)
Aodhan didnât stiffen or send him a shocked look. âI was expecting a grand proposal. Now youâve gone and shattered all my dreams.â Words so dry, they couldâve ignited a forest fire.
Illium threw back his head and laughed, then spun the other man around to kiss him. Aodhan was smiling, his words laced with amusement when he spoke into Illiumâs mind.
Scowling, Illium drew back. âWhy not?â
âWhen was the last time you heard of a second who was also a consort?â Aodhan raised an eyebrow. âConsorts are protected in battle even when theyâre warriors. A second can be protected, because his strength is yours.â
He held up a hand before Illium could speak. âAnd aside from some outliers, archangels donât consciously attack consorts or target them. You pronounce me your consort and your second at the same time and itâll screw up the entire system.â
Illium folded his arms across his chest. âItâs not like everyone doesnât already know we wear each otherâs amber.â Aodhanâs bracelet glinted as if in agreement.
âYes, my darling,â Aodhan said with tenderness, because he knew his lover. Archangel or not, Illiumâs heart could be hurtâand Aodhan could hurt it most of all. âBut you know the games of the Cadre. They can all accept that Iâm yours and youâre mine, while politely ignoring that in favor of my title as second.â
Illiumâs lip curled up in a snarl. âI to play this game.â
âYou have to.â Aodhan went toe to toe with him because that was his job as both Illiumâs consort and his second. âYou canât destabilize the system. Not yet. Not when youâre so new as an archangel. And Blue? I donât need a title to know who I am to you.â Grabbing one fisted hand, he pressed it to his heart. âI .â
Illiumâs jaw worked. âOne hundred years,â he said. âThen, Iâm adding you to my sigil. Weâre one, Adi, and weâll always be one. I donât care if people want to pretend otherwise. I wonât.â
Aodhan exhaled. âOne hundred years,â he said, accepting the compromise. Because he knew that obstinate look; Illium wouldnât back down any further. âAnd you donât have an official sigil yet.â
âYes, I do. You already drew it. So when are you going to show it to me?â
âYou drive me crazy.â Glaring, Aodhan cupped Illiumâs face, kissing him with love and tenderness and affection. Because while he wouldnât carry the title of consort, heâd never hide what they were to each other, what theyâd been to each other for centuries.
Illiumâs anger hadnât totally retreated when the kiss ended, but the wicked glint was back in his eye. âDid you plan for it to be a surprise?â
Aodhan squeezed his nape. âI swearâ¦â he muttered. âYouâre infuriating.â
Releasing Illiumâs nape, he reached into his pocket and withdrew the sigil heâd begun to work on in his mind the instant after Illiumâs ascension. Since sigils were black for the most partâfor only a rare few archangels had the gift of burning their sigil with colorâhe hadnât been able to work with Illiumâs signature hue.
Instead, heâd thought of all the pieces of his Blue, and decided on the image of a shooting star, but one that spiraled up in a bolt of dizzying power, not down. The detail was in the spiraling boltâit was made up of innumerable other tiny stars. âAll the hearts loyal to you,â Aodhan said. âAll the people who love you because you know how to love so hard.â
It was a stylized design, crisp, clean lines with nothing fussy about it. âI can change it if you donât like it,â he said when Illium was silent. âI have other options, I justââ
âHush, you beautiful, talented man.â Illiumâs order was tender, his hands careful as he took the sketch lit up by the glow coming off Aodhanâs hand. âIs this how you see me?â
âAs bright and generous and a gift?â Aodhan nuzzled Illiumâs temple. âHow can you not know that after all these years?â
Illium leaned into him, running his fingers over the lines of the sigilâ¦until it suddenly glowed a vibrant blue. Lifting his hand, Illium did something in the air that Aodhan couldnât quite followâ¦and the sigil glowed vivid Illium-blue against the night sky over their city, big and bright enough to be visible for miles.
Wonder and delight in Aodhanâs breath, his heart thunder. âI shouldâve known youâd find a way to stamp your mark on it beyond any doubt.â
âFigure out how youâre going to incorporate yourself into it as my consort when that ridiculous century is over.â
Aodhan threw his arm around Illiumâs shoulders. âYouâre cute when youâre mad.â
âI am going to strangle you,â Illium threatenedâ¦right before he smacked Aodhan in the back with his wing, sending him tumbling off the roof.
As Aodhan yelled in surprise, Illium said, .
His laughter lit up the night as above his city glowed a sigil of stars countlessâ¦and Aodhanâs laughter joined his, theirs an infinite symphony of two.
