Chapter 10

9: Trust

Finally Found You

Zane

I was a little bit nervous. I was excited at first, but my nerves went shaky as I approached the school grounds.

I didn't know how he would react to me actually going for it and talking to him. Usually, I just ignore him or avoid his existence all together, but that time it was going to be different. I reached my locker and opened it. I put my stuff in and took out the books I needed in my next two classes as I didn't have enough time to go from class to the locker and then to another class. I also took my notebook and the binder. I closed the locker and spun to head on my way to class. It didn't go as smoothly as I expected, because I bumped into someone and both my books and theirs fell to the floor. I didn't recognize who it was at first, but as we scurried to pick up the books, I recognized her immediately. It was Madeline Kinsley.

Madeline was one of the most popular girls at school. She was friends with the richest and most snobby students. I really disliked her clique, but I knew for sure that she was friends with Gavin, and Gavin, sadly, was an exception. At least for now.

But what was she doing creeping up behind me. She probably mistook me for someone else.

"Umm. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to drop your books," I apologized, but I wasn't apologetic. She was the one close behind me.

"Oh it's fine," she said, brushing off her clothes with her hand and flicking away her hair behind her back. She was really pretty, and from what I knew, smart too.

"Soo?" I spoke when she didn't say anything.

"You know I'm having my birthday party on Friday. Well of course everyone knows" Sadly yes, everyone knew, including me. But usually not everyone was invited, and honestly not everyone wanted to be invited. "So... would you like to come?" Oh.

Wait, what? So I was invited. "Are you inviting me to your party?"

"Yes, silly!" Why was she so happy? Did she not know she was talking to Zane Murad? The Arabian outcast.

The first bell rang and we both had to go, so I said that I'll think about it. She told me I could bring anyone I want as she left. Oh, André was going to freak out. Like I said before, it wasn't an easy party to get to.

I went to class and Gavin was already there. He was his usual cold self towards me. But with others, he was the epitome of brightness and happiness, like always.

I took the seat on his left and turned to him.

"I need to talk to you," I said bluntly. He didn't even realize that I was talking to him at first.

"What do you want?" His tone was as cold as he looked.

I looked sideways and noticed that it was really not the place to talk. "We need to talk after class or at lunch,"

"That can't happen," I was starting to lose my patience.

"And why is that?"

"Because I'm busy. Look," he looked around him and saw that no one was in earshot "What happened on Saturday was a mistake, and it's not gonna happen again. I would appreciate it if you just go back to your life and let me go back to mine."

Was he for real? I was trying so hard not to scream. Nope, it wasn't going to be his call this time.

"Listen to me, Gavin," I said loud enough for him to hear but not to draw too much attention. "You'll meet me in Art class after school, and we're gonna talk. And," he looked as if he was ignoring everything I was saying. I pursed my lips "I'll show you the stupid binder." It was like I had the magical power of sucking in attention because it felt like all his senses awoke upon hearing that. He simply nodded and didn't have much time to do anything else before the teacher showed up.

The rest of the classes went by smoothly. When I got to lunch, André was already waiting for me.

"Hey man," he said, not looking up from his food.

"Hey," I said, taking a seat in front of him. "So, I'm invited to a party,"

André quickly burst into laughter, "Yeah, right,"

He saw the serious look on my face when he looked at me. "Oh, you're serious?"

"Yes," I hissed, "Dead serious."

"Whose party is it?" I waited for him to drink a generous amount of his juice and hit him with the bomb.

"Madeline Kinsley," I said and ducked quickly. As I expected, juice went all over the place. Dramatic André.

"You have got to be kidding me," he wiped his mouth with a napkin.

"No, I'm not. Oh, and guess what's cooler?"

"Dude nothing is cooler. You don't simply get invited to one of Madeline's parties."

"You're invited too." Okay, I did not expect him to actually squeal.

"Are you serious?!" He gasped, his eyes as wide as his mouth when he was eating.

"When have you ever heard me joke?"

"Good point," he shrugged. "Gah, man, I'm so excited!"

"I can tell." I wasn't as excited, actually. "Well, I'm not. I'm actually thinking of not going, "

"What? Are you insane?" Parties weren't my cup of tea.

"No. I don't know. We'll see."

-

Art class came up quickly, and I wasted no time finishing my painting, which looked like it needed less work for some reason. Like, I could've sworn that there was a lot more that needed to be done. As the class reached its ending, Gavin didn't seem like he was staying. He was actually packing in a hurry.

"I get it that you don't want to see it?" I asked a very hurried Gavin.

"Oh shit, I forgot! Coach wants us on the field right after this class and I'm already late. But can you gi... Never mind."

"Give it to you?"

"Yes?" he said rubbing at his neck. "Is it okay?"

"Yeah, sure. I trust you enough, Gavin. Weirdly, I do." I handed him it but while giving it to him a paper slipped out of it. "Please, don't make me regret this."

"I won't. I promise." He stuffed it in his bag and left quickly.

I stood in the middle of the class examining the page. It was just scrabbles, but I was pretty sure it wasn't mine. I shrugged it off, crimpled it and threw it away, then left. I had much more important things to worry about. Like a whole shift at the coffee house.

-

André called me about 10 times today, and that was only before school. He wanted to make sure that I was still going to the party with him, which was tomorrow. I was dreading only one thing: Gavin was going to be there.

He gave me back the binder the next day with a look of hurt and disappointment on his face. I didn't understand him at all, sometimes.

"Happy?" I had said when he handed it to me first period.

"Yeah. Thanks for trusting me with it," He said, his voice a bit sad.

"Are you okay?" I asked. He looked defeated. Broken.

"Yeah. It just wasn't what I expected, or to be truthful, what I hoped it would be."

"Sorry to disappoint you, I guess." That was all what I said. And since then everything between us has been awkward. He hadn't ignored me or got angry at me or anything, but boy I wish he did. He looked like he didn't want anything to do with me anymore. Like he really wanted that thing he was looking for to be in the binder.

"You're still going to the party with me?" André asked when he saw me before history class.

"Yeah, I am."

"You're still going to the party with me?" André asked when he saw me at lunch.

"Yes, probably."

"You're still going to the party with me?" André asked when he saw me in the parking lot.

"Ask one more time and I swear to God I'm punching you so hard you'll wake up two weeks after the party."

"But, you're still going, right?"

"HERRERA!"

"Okay, okay! Somebody is agitated."

"Well, of course, if you keep asking me that I will be more than agitated." I rustled.

-

I spent an hour just trying to figure out what to wear. What do people wear to parties!?

"Why don't you wear this shirt?" My older sister threw a black shirt on my bed that looked elegant enough.

"Yeah, this could work, I guess,"

"I still can't believe you're invited to Madeline Kinsley's party. I don't go to your school and I know how popular she is,"

"I'm only going because André is going. I hate parties, anyway."

"You're way too weird to be my brother,"

"I like it that way. Now leave, I have to get dressed."

"You could've at least said 'Thank You'." she said on her way out but I knew she wasn't upset or anything. It was just sibling banter.

I put on the shirt swiftly, and got dressed in black pants and black shoes because I loved black obviously. I styled my hair a little but it didn't help much so I just kept it the way it is.

Phone, Wallet, Keys... I guess I'm going to the party, I thought.
