Chapter 19 - Mother knows best
What kind of transmigration is this?!
*****
Meanwhile Aila was preparing to sleep and is sitting by the dresser doing her skin care.
This pretty face didn't come without any work apparently.
From the old Aila's memories, it takes a lot of effort and money to look this good. As someone who is just inhabiting this body, the least she could do was take care of it. Speaking of which, she wondered what happened to the old Aila, this world seems more real now to her since she's been interacting with the people in it. It hurts her conscience if her spirit is out there being lost in the void while she's living this good life.
But what am I to do to even find her?
At that moment her phone rang, she found that it's her mother on the other end of the line. She then clicked answer and finally saw the mastermind behind her embarrassment last night.
"Hello Mother." Aila said with a pout.
"Oh my, oh my...aren't you wearing what I sent you? you look great in it dear."
Aila looked at herself in the mirror and she had to admit she looked great in it; she wore tonight the least revealing one. An olive-green camisole while still sexy it's not as revealing than the red one.
"Well, thanks to you of course, mom." Aila responded sarcastically.
"Why did you change my clothes anyway? what I had was perfectly fine." She spoke defensively.
"Tsk...tsk...dear listen to mother when it comes to these things. When it comes to romance you must not wait around for a man to come around. Didn't I teach you that before?"
Yeah, I guess that's why the old Aila was quite aggressive to Calvin. Turns out mother was the reason.
"But still mom, we're just going to a birthday party. Why all this fuss? besides he's already your future son-in-law. You're wish came true, please settle down already."
"The battle is only half won dear. You do know how high up the hierarchy Calvin is? Looks, smarts and wealth. Throngs of women are just waiting for you to fail and take over your throne!"
"This isn't game of thrones mom!"
"Still dear, a woman should make an effort as well to keep her man happy. Why do you think your father is still crazy over me after all these years? It wasn't just a miracle we are together for so long."
Aila thought she had a point and was actually amazed by her logic in a way.
With a gossipy note her mother added:
"So how did it go?"
"How what go?"
"You know what I mean!"
Aila remembered what happened last night and couldn't help but blush again.
"Oho...I see."
"See what?" Aila responded defensively.
"You're on the right track dear. If he had that reaction last night, then he is not immune to your charms."
"Shouldn't you encourage your daughter to maintain her chastity? Why are you throwing me to the dogs?"
"Oh please, if the dog is Calvin, then I'd even throw you naked."
"Mother! how could you!"
"Dear, I didn't marry the most handsome man I could find, gave birth to you with such good looks and waste it away hiding it. You should be proud that someone as lofty as Calvin took notice of you."
"Still Mom, what are you even trying to achieve by having me wear these. It's so indecent."
"Mother just knows what looks best on you dear. You don't look great on those fluffy, cutesy things. You're a woman now and a woman should dress like one. Besides, we should move your wedding closer. I want to see my grandbabies soon."
"Urggh...mom, we'll get there when we get there. Why are you rushing? you're still young yourself."
Her mother then proceeds to fake cry on the phone.
"You'll never understand till you become a mom yourself dear. Oh, how adorable you two were when you were young. Now all I have is this big empty house and everyone busy with their own lives. I hardly see you and your brother."
"Mom, we are always a phone call away! we still live in the same house too!"
"Yes, but you're not adorable anymore."
"Alright, alright you win. I'm wearing it now and I'll accompany you wherever you want when I get home. Happy?"
"Of course, dear! Well, I have to go now. Nice to see you Calvin as well!" Her mom then dropped the phone faster than a speeding bullet.
Aila didn't have time to get her bearings and found that Calvin was behind her through the phone's reflection.
"Wha..." She then turned around and saw Calvin's deep gaze towards her.
"You...You're back early?" Aila didn't know what to do with her arms. She was fighting to keep them from instinctively covering herself up.
Breathe Aila...he's seen it all anyway, so it doesn't matter...whatever am I talking about? It's still awkward and embarrassing damn it!
"Your mother is such a unique personality. I'm so lucky that I'll be her future son-in-law." Calvin said with a smirk.
"How long have you stood there?" Aila's eyes was about to bug out. Running circles in her mind the conversation she just had with her mother.
"Oh, I've been here awhile. I see that you're ready for bed?"
Aila glanced at her outfit then to the bed, she was planning to get under the covers before Calvin came back but who knew he'll come back less than an hour. He used to take longer so she assumed she'll be asleep by then.
Calvin seeing her eyeing the bed said:
"Want me to carry you to bed?"
Aila immediately shot up and almost ran to the bed while saying:
"What are you talking about? I have perfectly good legs."
"I can very well see that."
Aila blushed again. Aware that a lot of skin is showing in this lingerie even if it's the humblest of them all.
"Well, you shouldn't sneak up on people like that. You should've signaled that your already back."
"And miss all the fun? honey, you can't be serious?" Calvin said jokingly with a hand against his heart.
"Fine, whatever. I'm going to sleep. You should get ready to bed as well." She then turned her back to him and raised the blanket up to her chin.
"Aww...I didn't know my honey missed me so much that she can't wait to sleep beside me. Don't worry. I'll be right back." Calvin said teasingly and went inside the bathroom.
Aila then threw a pillow at the closed bathroom door fumingly.
Oww...my head hurts...

Meanwhile...
Back at the Carter's residence.
"Mom, you shouldn't pressure Aila so much to get married so early."
"Allister, if you'd brought a marriageable girl at home then I'd have let your sister live a single dog's life."
Allister then raised his hands in surrender.
"I'm still quite young myself mother. Right dad?"
Mr. Carter rolled his eyes at his son. He will not take the bait and take sides with him especially with his wife is in the same room.
Mother Carter then smacked a magazine in Allister's head.
"Oww! what was that for?"
"Didn't you see the headlines?! look at this 'Upper Circle Hot News: Calvin Harrison was in a secret affair with Hanna Snyder'. I'll show those gossipmongers that 'Hanna' girl is nothing compared to my Aila."
"You're a gossipmonger too mom!"
Allister earned another smack from his mother.
"Son, you should know by now not to argue with your mother. It doesn't always end well. Besides your mother knows best. Right dear?" Mr. Carter said lovingly to Mrs. Carter.
"You know me well, dear." Mother Carter responded lovingly as well.
Allister seeing this interaction felt painfully the life of a single dog.
Maybe I should find a wife as well.
He thought while he massaged his aching head.
