Chapter 114
When His Eyes Opened
Elliot was lying through his teeth, but Ben had no reply.
of all the years they had known each other, Ben had never once seen Elliot in a sweater.
Although, perhaps a sweater that Avery knitted for him was much more meaningful than one that was
bought with money,
âYour mom called me saying your nephew was discharged from the hospital,â Ben said. âShe wants
you to go home for dinner tonight.â
âShe can tell me that herself,â Elliot said.
âDid she upset you recently? She was pretty cautious when she talked to me earlier. Donât be mad at
your mom, Elliot. Thereâs nothing like a motherâs love in this worldâ
âPlease stop talking.â
Ben burst into laughter.
âDo you want to go back to the old mansion for dinner with Avery?â
Elliot thought for a moment, then said, âDidnât you say sheâs been busy knitting?â
âThatâs true! Thereâs only a week left. I wonder how sheâs doing.â
When Elliot arrived at the old mansion that night, Rosalie was beside herself with joy.
Everyone else, on the other hand, had different levels of caution on their faces.
Elliotâs cold gaze fell on Cassandra.
âSheâs Averyâs sister, Cassandra Tateâ¦â Rosalie explained when she saw her son staring at their
guest. âI didnât like her at first, but sheâs been taking care of Cole after he got hurtâ¦â
Cassandra grew apprehensive under Elliotâs unwavering gaze.
She mustered up the courage to greet him and said, âNice to meet you, Sir. Iâm Averyâs sister. I thought
that youâd be coming with her tonight!â
Elliot ignored her and shifted his gaze to Coleâs haggard and sluggish face.
The time he had spent at the hospital was the most agonizing period of his life.
âI broke up with Avery half a year ago, Uncle Elliot. She hated me after she found out that I was seeing
Cassandra. There was no way that I would be able to devise a plot to keep her by your side,â explained
Cole desperately.
âI could tell,â Elliot said, then added after a brief pause, âIâm afraid you donât have the ability
to rule Avery Tate.â
Averyâs unique personality prevented anyone from controlling her.
âInsult me however you want. As long as youâre happy,â Cole said humbly.
âIâd be happy if you shut your mouth,â Elliot said bluntly.
Cole remained silent.
His finger reattachment surgery went well, but he was not fully recovered yet and had to depend on
Cassandra to feed him.
The tension remained strained throughout the nightâs dinner.
Noticing the rigid silence, Cassandra decided to lighten the atmosphere.
âWe had a credible fortune teller predict Averyâs future for us before,â she said. âThey told us that Avery
would bring bad luck to her husband⦠I bet your recent accident was because of her.
As Elliot raised his eyes to look at her, his gaze chilled her to the bone.
âIâm a pretty good fortune teller myself. Iâll predict your future right now⦠You wonât live long.â
Cassandraâs fork fell from her hands and clattered to the floor.
Sensing her sonâs rage, Rosalie called for the bodyguard and said, âThrow her out!â
Cole was upset that Cassandra was being kicked out.
âGrandmaââ
âShut up! Feed yourself or donât eat at all! I never liked that girl! Sheâll be nothing but trouble for you!â
Cole did not say another word and proceeded to try his best to pick up his fork with his injured hand.
Elliot pulled out a check from his pocket, slid it across the table to his brother, and said, âThis is for
taking care of Mother, Henry. Take it.â
â¢Rosalie lived with Henry, so Elliot would regularly give his brother some money to cover expenses.
Henry was hesitant.
He wanted to accept the money, but he could not help but feel humiliated. It was a childâs duty to take
care of their mother, after all.
