Chapter 278 - 278 We need to head back
To Bewitch a Devil
278 We need to head back
âTake a break,â Azriel barked the orders as he approached their carriage. He smiled as Zavian opened the door, and a smile grew when he saw Freya.
âFinally back on the fields,â Azriel said. âCongratulations.â
âWhen you two give me the chance to hold a sword, I am going to win you both in the first duel,â Freya said.
Azriel laughed, sheathing his sword. âAnd my reward after I win would be?â
âLetâs not get ahead of ourselves,â Zavian said. âHas Lydia been spotted?â
âNo,â Azriel answered. âMy spies havenât seen her anywhere recently. Itâs like she disappeared.â
âNot a good sign,â Freya breathed out.
âAnd no attacks so far,â Zavian added. âWhat have they all been up to?â
âWe need to act before they do,â Freya said.
.....
âCall Aloysius out before he initiates the war,â Zavian said.
âExactly.â
âI thought of it, but I need the men to train harder. I need the witches to reinforce us with their spellsâ¦â
âThe more we wait, Brother. The more we give Aloysius the chance to grow stronger every day.â Freya said. âAnd I need the witches to perform the healing spell on me.ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Zavianâs eyes widened. âThatâs too painful, even for the strongest of demons.â
âEven when I was wounded I chose to take my time to heal,â Azriel added.
âAll those circumstances were different, this is a great battle, and I need that spell because we donât have time,â Freya said. âI will take every pain. And besides, I heard it is just like the pain of childbirth, not something females donât experience on a norm.â
âThey will expunge every wound from inside out, and youâd experience the pain you did when it was first inflicted. Are you sure you want that?â Azriel asked.
âI have given it a lot of thought, so yes,â Freya said, determined. âI will take it, and so far, no one has died from it, right?â Freyaâs eyes popped wide, and she looked at Zavian. âHow again did you say Neera was able to speak with Lydia?â
âThey met up, why?â
âNo, before then,â Freya said. âNeera must have been told about what to do somehow. And since she was ill, and was only able to see Lydia at night, she would have been caught somehow.â Freya whirled so fast to look at her brother he held out a hand in case she fell or tore a wound.
âDid you ask her?â Freya said.
But Zavian didnât, and he shook his head. He had been too angry that time to even remember the minuscule details of what she said.
âShe could be our link to Lydia,â Freya said, staring beyond both of them to the men lazing around in the sun, some lying down on the hot red soil, panting, some downing water, and others stretching out their bodies.
âWe need to head back,â Freya told her brother. âI have a few questions for your dear wife.â
â¦.
Penelope was busy cleaning Neeraâs chambers as Neera sat quietly on the edge of the bed. She saw the Queenâs eyes go to the mirror, and Penelope looked at the vanity table, trying to see if there was anything of interest there.
But there wasnât, and this quiet Neera was someone Pen had come to grow to understand and getting used to, even though all she knew was there was a huge fight between her and the King, but nothing more than that.
âWhat is faster? Hot or cold?â Penelope asked as she dusted behind the curtains.
Neera raised her head and blinked till the daze in her eyes brought her back to the present. âHuhn?â
âI asked what is faster? Hot or cold?â Penelope repeated her question.
âUhmâ¦I thinkâ¦hot?â Neera answered, unsure.
âCorrect,â Penelope beamed. âYou can easily catch cold.â
âHow can youâ¦oh, I see what you did there,â Neeraâs lips wore a ghost of a smile.
âWhat starts with a âtâ, ends with a âtâ, and is full of âtâ?â Penelope threw her another riddle.
âPen, that doesnât make any sense.â
âPen, that doesnât make any sense,â Neera smoothened a crease on the bed, paying her friend no mind.
âJust answer the question,â Penelope insisted.
âOkay,â Neera raised her head as if the ceiling held the answers. Penelope continued dusting, her focus shifting between Neera to the tabletop.
âI really have no idea,â Neera said at last. She looked at Penelope. âA string of tâs?â
âWrong!â
âThen tell me.â
âA teakettle!â Penelope laughed.
âHow does a⦠Oh!â Neera joined in on her laughter, falling back to the bed. Penelope put down her duster and sat next to her friend.
âThatâs so silly,â Neera said, and managed to leave a trail of giggles till it died, and Penelope was grateful for the little smile that still remained on her lips.
âI know,â Penelope said. âI was only trying to cheer you up.â
Neera sighed. âI am not the best company to have around these days, am I?â
âYou are.â Penelope refuted, and with reckless abandon, she laid back down, facing Neera when she turned sideways. âI love your presence, it is more than enough. But I still miss you.â
Neera felt bad. Zavian wasnât speaking to her, yes, but next to her was a friend who was ready to go above and beyond for her, who had been there for her in the good, the bad, and the ugly times altogether.
âI am sorry,â Neera apologized. âJust give me some time. I will be back.â
âAnd the offer still stands, Neera,â Penelope smiled at her. âIf you need someone to listen or help in any way, I am here.â
âPen,â Neera sat up, and Penelope did the same. âDo you sometimes feel I burden you too much by doing that? By always looking like the friend who needs to vent?â
âWhat?â Penelope had no idea where Neera got such a thought. âNeera, no. Why would you say that?â
âYou have done so much for me and I feel I have done so littleâ¦â
