Chapter 39

I dropped eggs and flour on the floor and ran as fast as I could to him, then grabbed his foot and pinned it to the stool.

"Mateusz!" I screamed in despair with tears in my eyes and a burning lump in my throat. "Mateusz!" After a short while the sound of quick footsteps gradually became louder.

"What happened?" Mateusz ran into the apartment confused. "Oh shit!" He cursed as soon as he noticed us and in a jiffy he was also next to him, embracing and pressing his thighs to himself. "What are you doing?!" He shouted to Alex , who seemed to be absent-minded at that moment. "What's going on here?!" Now he looked angrily at me and I shook my head.

"I don't know." I cried still pressing his foot. "He was already standing like that when I came back. I have no idea how he could be so fast..."I shook my head and a few of my tears fell onto Alex's bare foot.

"I'll take it off him. Stay still." Mateusz said, loosening the noose and then taking it off Alex's neck. "You can let him go now. I'll help him down." Mateusz appeared stronger than I expected him to be, judging by his appearance. He carried Alex to his bedroom and laid him on the rumpled bed.

I wondered how Alex could get out of bed so quickly, attach the rope to the chandelier, and climb onto the stool. I was literally gone for a few minutes. I didn't know what to think about all this. I was just glad to be back on time.

"What did you think, you idiot?!" Mateusz shouted when he finally was able to process all that situation. "You scared the shit out of us! Why did you want to do this?" Alex didn't feel like talking. He looked terribly depressed and with no willingness to live, yet before I left he was still laughing and smiling!

"I didn't want to be a burden to her." He finally confessed almost in a whisper and my heart pounded harder. I didn't even notice when a new wave of tears was dripping on my cheeks.

"Alex...You're not a burden to me. Not at all!" I looked into his sad eyes, and he looked into mine already red with tears. "I love you. " I said loudly. I didn't care about Mateusz who was still with us in the room. I just wanted Alex to know that he can rely on me. Alex blushed and seemed to regain his former glow.

"Y-You love me?" He asked in disbelief.

"Yes. I love you so mu..-" I didn't finish because then he pressed his lips to mine and didn't allow me to speak. He was kissing me until I lost my breath. Meanwhile, Mateusz quietly moved out of the room, leaving us alone.

"I love you too." The German confessed and kissed me again on the lips but this kiss was much longer than the previous one...
