Chapter 13

Love Knows No Sides

After making some sandwiches for Alex, I went back to cleaning. Of course, it wouldn't be possible without talking to him, but now I felt that something had changed. I no longer felt as reserved and averse to him as at the beginning of our relationship. Although everyone would catch a falling person, especially since this person cleans your apartment.

During the conversation, I was able to learn that the German is not only on guard and patrols, but is investigating various cases, in particular those where the main perpetrators are German soldiers. That's why he found me, and I shivered involuntarily at the mention of blood in the snow and icy water.

After Alex holed up in his bedroom, I started washing up after his meal. Later I finished cleaning the kitchen and started dusting off the large living room.

Personally, I was delighted with the elegance of the furniture and its condition, which was admirable, as if the German did not sit in the living room at all. The room also had a thick TV and a radio on the window sill. I saw these devices for the first time with my own eyes. It is true that I heard about technological novelties, but I did not understand them with my rural and simple mind. I didn't want them, or even asked for them. I preferred my previous life, in which my family stood first, then my home, and only my own desires and dreams last. What are my dreams exactly? I thought again and sat on the expensive sofa that had probably never been used before.

What do you want, Maria? What do you want to achieve? I asked myself these questions in my head. I sat there for a good few moments until I realized something. Right now I was pursuing my goal in some way. I was cleaning, and why was I cleaning? To earn money, but what do I need money for? Well, I want to pay Grandma Pola for hospitality. And what's next? Will I stay with her for the rest of my life? It can't be like that. When I have enough money, I will look for my own apartment and move out. Yes, this is a good starting point to pay off the debt and move out.

Now that I knew what I expected from life, I was able to continue my work with more willingness and satisfaction. My only hope was that Alex would not prove to be tight and pay me a fair sum for my services.

I finished dusting the living room and cleaning the bathroom when the German left his room, actually ran out. He reached the nearest kitchen sink and began to have a loud and hoarse cough. Frightened, I came to him and put my hand on his broad shoulder. Coughing, he shaked his head, which meant he didn't need my help. Finally he got up from the sink and I noticed there was blood on his mouth and chin ...
