If You Love Me: Chapter 46
If You Love Me (The Toronto Terror Series)
âDo you have a minute?â Shilpa pokes her head in my office.
âYeah, of course. Whatâs up?â In the weeks since Roman and I have been married, the tension between Shilpa and me has dissipatedâat least outside the office. Sheâs careful to keep things professional here. Which means in this moment I canât read her at all.
She raises a hand. âItâs good news.â
My shoulders come down from my ears. âI like good news.â
âThe internal review paperwork has officially been filed and you are completely cleared.â
âThat is such a relief.â The rock thatâs been in my stomach all these weeks finally dissolves.
âI know itâs been rough and the media will still have their feelings about you being married to Roman, but in the eyes of the league and management, none of the allegations had any merit. Every member of the team believes in you and values your role as their coach.â Thereâs genuine pride in her voice and on her face.
âThatâs really good to hear.â I look away, working to keep my emotions in check.
While itâs been business as usual, knowing that the review is finally filed, and Iâve been cleared of all allegations makes everything feel that much better. Vander Zee and Boxer have been great, but Thomas has been frosty. Heâs friends with Donnie, and Iâm sure heâs conflicted, but all of Donnieâs allegations just made him look like a chauvinist asshole.
The relief is overwhelming. âThe stress has been something else.â
âI imagine it has.â Shilpa rubs her rounded belly. Sheâs just started to show. Sheâs due in early fall.
âFor both of us.â I motion between us.
She laughs. âYou arenât the first woman to fall for a player, and Roman is a special guy.â
âHe really is,â I agree.
âItâll be easier when heâs not playing next year.â She sighs and leans her shoulder against the jamb, fiddling with the end of her braid. âI know I was harshâ ââ
I raise a hand. âYouâve already apologized, and you donât need to explain.â
She looks at me a moment. âWell, then Iâll just say Iâm so glad youâre as strong as you are and that you and Roman found a partner in each other. He has a huge heart, and he needed someone to share it with.â Her phone chimes in her pocket, and she glances at the clock. âI have a meeting offsite, but Iâll be at the game tonight.â
âIâll see you there.â
She leaves me feeling a whole lot lighter. I would text Roman the good news, but I feel like this is better said in person.
Vander Zee knocks on my door twenty minutes later. âShilpa gave you the news?â
âShe did.â
âIt came out as I expected.â He drops into the chair across from mine.
âItâs a weight lifted,â I tell him.
âI have some other news,â he adds.
âOh?â
âDonnie has been relieved of his duties as equipment manager. We felt it best for the team climate that he no longer work with the Terror.â
âHeâs been fired?â I might not like him, or the things he put me through, but he has a family.
âHe was given a severance package and offered transfer opportunities, but not in the professional league and not in management.â
âI see. Thank you for letting me know.â I would have managed, but it will make the end of this season less stressful for all of us. âI think Roman will probably be relieved to hear that.â
âAgreed. Hopefully, it will ease any worries.â
âIâm sure it will.â As much as he tries to roll with things, this has been just as hard for him because he didnât have control over the outcome.
âThe team will miss him.â Vander Zee taps on the arm of the chair, pensive.
âThey will, but Ryker is up for the job. He has the skill set and a good head on his shoulders to go with it.â
âYouâre right about that, and Grace and Madden seem to have settled down.â He raps on my desk. âKnock on wood that trend continues.â
âAs long as those two can stay away from each otherâs shirts and sandwiches, we should be okay.â
Vander Zee snorts a laugh. âSeriously. I still donât know what to think about that.â
âI donât think any of us do.â
His phone buzzes in his pocket.
âGet that, if you need to.â
He pulls it out and frowns as he reads the message. âWell, this isnât ideal.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
âItâs not team related,â he assures me.
âStill, anything I can help with?â
âTally and the boyfriend had a fight. She was out with friends last night, and apparently, someone saw her talking to some guy, and now the boyfriend is tossing out accusations.â He runs a hand through his hair.
âWhat kind of accusations?â I ask.
âHe thinks sheâs cheating on him.â He blows out a breath. âMy wife is relaying this through text message, so Iâm only getting part of the story. I wish Tally would break up with this kid. I donât like him. And I definitely donât like that heâs pulling this shit. Final exams are coming up, and she doesnât need the added stress.â
This guy sounds like a whole lot of red flags, but I donât want to overstep. âSometimes when people are insecure, itâs because theyâve had that experience before,â I hedge.
âI know. But we canât tell Tallulah that. I donât get why sheâs with this guy. Eline is trying to get her to come to the game tonight. Will Fee be there? It could be a good distraction.â
âIâll ask.â I send Fee a quick message.
It only takes her a minute to respond. She says sheâs in if Tallyâs coming, and sheâs already messaged her. Within two minutes, the whole thing is arranged.
âSheâs always been such an easy kid, and that hasnât changed, but this boyfriend of hersâ¦â He drums his fingers in agitation. âIf this is anything to go by, Iâm not sure how Iâll handle it with her younger sister.â
âI feel this in my soul,â I tell him.
âI canât imagine what it must have been like for Roman last season.â He shakes his head. âI have a lot of respect for that man.â
I only saw what was covered on the hockey sites, but knowing Roman the way I do now, it definitely wasnât easy for him to see his daughter with his best friend. âHe loves them both very much. It helps that Hollis adores Aurora, but it was tough for all of them.â
âYeah. I just want Tallulah to find someone worthy of her.â
âShe will. Sometimes you have to learn what doesnât work for you before you find what does,â I say.
His phone buzzes, with a call this time. âThatâs my wife. I really hope I donât have to bury this guy for hurting my daughter.â He brings the phone to his ear. âHi, darling, is our little girl okay? If I take care of him, he wonât be a problem anymore.â He gives me a chin tip and leaves my office.
Poor Tally. It canât be easy trying to date with a dad as protective as Vander Zee.
I message Roman.
He shows up at my office fifteen minutes later.
âI have news.â
âI-need-to-call-Sam kind of news, or get-out-the-balloons kind of news?â he asks.
I laugh. Hemiâs brother Sam is intense. I donât know what his job is, but Dallas jokes that heâs a fixer. âThe paperwork has been filed. Iâm fully cleared.â
âThatâs fantastic.â
âAnd Donnie isnât with the Terror anymore.â
âThatâs even better news, because I had some plans for him that might have made my retirement a challenge. Weâre celebrating the hell out of this later.â He closes my office door, turns the lock, and strides across the room. Taking my hand, he pulls me out of the chair. Romanâs arms circle my waist and his eyes spark with desire.
âYou shouldnât look at me like that when weâre in the office.â I lace my fingers behind his neck.
âStop looking so tempting, then, beautiful wife.â He strokes my cheek. âThank you for weathering this storm with me. I know this hasnât been easy.â
âLoving you is worth it.â
He drops his head, and the kiss is soft, a tender promise of whatâs to come later.
