If You Love Me: Chapter 43
If You Love Me (The Toronto Terror Series)
âCan you pass me the syrup, please?â Fee asks.
âAbsolutely. Whipped cream, too, right?â I pass her both.
âOh, and the blueberries.â Fee reaches across the table for them. Sheâs in much better form this morning.
âCan I have more bacon?â Callie asks.
âCan I have more bacon, please?â Lexi adds another slice to her plate.
I set my knife and fork down. âOkay, now that weâre all here, Lexi and I wanted to let you know that weâre starting family therapy next week.â
Lexi and I discussed it this morning, and she agreed that itâs something the girls need. We all do. These girls are grieving the loss of their parents, and they need a sounding board who can help them deal with their feelings and all the changes theyâre managing. And I need to learn not to overcompensate.
âTherapy?â Fee looks nervous.
âWeâre an unconventional family, and we all need a safe place to talk about our feelings. Weâll see one therapist together, all four of us, and then if you girls want to talk to someone on your own, we can do that too,â Lexi explains.
âIâm sure Peggyâs therapist would be happy to take you girls on,â I add.
âAuroraâs in therapy?â Fee seems shocked.
âShe has been since she was six. She started with art therapy and progressed. She goes every other month now, but for a while she went weekly.â
âWas there something wrong with her?â Callie asks.
âNope. She just needed someone to talk to when she was having a hard time with her feelings and didnât know what to do with them. I see one, too. I started going once a month this year because Iâm retiring, and I have some feelings about that.â I want therapy to be normalized for them, like it is for Peggy.
âOkay. If Peggy can handle therapy so can I,â Fee says decisively.
âCan I try art therapy?â Callie asks.
âSure. We can give that a shot.â Lexi squeezes my hand.
âGreat. Iâm glad weâre all on board.â I look to Lexi, and she smiles, giving me the go ahead. âNow that you girls are moved in, Lexi and I thought it would be a good idea if we came up with a list of house rules.â
âHouse rules?â Callie parrots.
âYup. I think itâs important, now that weâre the Hammerstein-Forrester clan, that we have our own set of rules.â
âWe get to help make them?â Fee asks skeptically.
âWeâre a democracy, so we should all get a say,â Lexi confirms.
âLike if the dishwasher isnât running, put your dishes in it instead of leaving them in the sink.â Fee gives her sister a look.
âSometimes Iâm in a hurry,â Callie says defensively, while grinning.
âThe kitchen can have its own set of rules,â Lexi clarifies, âwhich are different from our family rules. So what are the things we want to make sure we always do or donât do when it comes to respecting each other?â
âNever go to bed angry?â Fee asks.
âI love that one. Peggy and I had the same rule when she was growing up.â I write it at the top of the list.
âOkay, Callie, your turn,â Lexi says.
âBe kind and use kind words.â
âThatâs a great one,â Lexi says.
âI didnât make it up. Itâs a rule in my class.â Callie drags her bacon through her maple syrup. Iâm pretty sure she learned that from Peggy.
âDefinitely a great class rule and house rule.â I add it to the list.
âIs it Lexiâs turn?â Callie asks.
âIt sure is.â This feels good, like weâre part of a new team, working together to figure things out.
âBe accountable. That means when we do something wrong, we own our mistake and try not to do it again,â Lexi explains.
âItâs okay to make mistakes, though. Weâre all human,â I add. âBut when we say weâre sorry, we should always mean it.â
âThose are rules three and four, right?â Fee pops a blueberry into her mouth.
âYup. Your turn again, Fee.â I write down rules three and four.
âUmâ¦â She taps her lip. âHow about always be honest with each other?â
âLove that one.â I jot it down.
Callie bounces in her chair. âOh! Never say itâs too hard or I quit!â
âYou sound like a true goalie.â I wink.
âItâs Lexiâs turn again,â Fee says.
âWe always keep our word, to ourselves and to others,â Lexi adds.
I dip my chin in agreement. âItâs okay to fail, as long as we learn and try again. Okay, Fee and Callie, last two rules, what should they be?â
âAlways have fun!â Callie shouts.
âYes to that. I love it. Fee, whatâs rule ten?â
âListen to each other?â she asks.
âThatâs perfect. I think we have a great list.â I read them over, before I ask, âAre we missing anything?â
âI think itâs good,â Callie says.
âI like it,â Fee agrees.
âMe three.â Lexi smiles.
âItâs unanimous, then. Iâll get Peggy to help me turn it into a poster.â
âI could do that! Iâm good at graphics,â Fee offers.
I grin, itâs amazing to be surrounded by so much love. âEven better.â
We finish breakfast, and the girls help clear the table before they go to their rooms. Lexi wraps her arms around my waist. âI adore you.â
I stroke her cheek. âAnd I adore you.â
âThank you for making them feel heard.â
âWeâre a family. Families make decisions together.â I kiss her softly, marveling at how lucky I am to have found Lexi, and that against all odds we came back to each other when we needed each other the most.
âHow do you always know what to do and say?â she whispers.
âI donât. I just know that the first time around, I didnât have a partner to do any of this with. And this time I do. So I want us to make decisions as a unit, and the best way to do that is to ensure everyone has a voice.â
She fingers the hair at the nape of my neck. âIâm a little obsessed with how incredible you are.â
I pull her tighter against me. âIâm a little obsessed with everything about you.â
âKiss me, please.â She tips her chin up, and I drop my head, covering her mouth with mine.
âOh. Ew. No. New rule! No making out anywhere that isnât behind a closed door!â Fee groans. âIâll be in my room, rocking in the corner, if youâre looking for me!â
âAdd it to the list,â I call over my shoulder.
