If You Love Me: Chapter 40
If You Love Me (The Toronto Terror Series)
âIt sure is tense in here,â Grace observes as we suit up for practice.
A shitstorm is brewingâwell, actually, itâs brewed. I just hope my teammates can handle it.
âWhereâs Coach Forrester?â Madden asks as he finishes lacing up his skates.
âShe wonât be joining us today,â Vander Zee snaps.
Madden frowns. âIs she okay?â
âWhy donât you ask our goalie? He might know.â
I give Vander Zee a look. âReally, man?â
âFuck.â Hendrix shakes his head.
âThis is about to get nasty.â Palaniappa focuses on his gear.
âWhatâs in the air today?â a rookie asks.
âI wish I had some popcorn,â Bright whispers, but heâs not nearly as quiet as he thinks.
Vander Zeeâs head whips around. âYou think this is funny?â
âNope. Just hungry.â Bright goes back to lacing up his skates.
Ryker looks anxious, and Stiles seems like heâd rather be anywhere else.
âSomeone want to explain what the fuck is going on?â Madden asks.
I cross my arms. âThis is how you thought the team should find out? While youâre still pissed off and being reactive? Youâve been my coach for the past nine years. Whereâs the respect?â
âI could ask you the same question,â Vander Zee fires back.
âIs there a full moon or something?â Stiles mutters.
I hold up my hand with the ring on it and glare at Vander Zee. âCoach Forrester is my wife. Sheâs not here because someone has an axe to grind. Happy now?â
Vander Zeeâs nostrils flare.
Murmurs of âholy shitâ and âno wayâ and âwhat the fuck?â ricochet through my teammates.
âAll right, guys. Letâs get on the ice and give these two a minute, yeah?â Hendrix makes a circle motion with his finger. Coaches Thomas and Boxer step in and usher the team out of the locker room.
Hendrix hangs back, arms crossed.
âOf course you knew about this,â Vander Zee says to him.
Hendrix sighs and pins Vander Zee with an unimpressed stare. âI get that youâre not happy about this, Coach, and I respect that youâve been blindsided, but Iâm a little concerned youâre going to say the very wrongest of things, and then our goalie is going to be out for a five-game suspension for punching you in the mouth.â
âI can handle myself,â I say through gritted teeth.
âUnder normal circumstances, I would agree. However, these are not normal circumstances,â Hendrix argues.
âWeâll be fine,â I assure him.
âYou can go,â Vander Zee agrees.
âOkay.â Hendrix raises his hands. âPlease donât break your hands on each otherâs faces.â
He leaves the locker room.
Vander Zee grips the back of his neck. âWhy, Roman? Youâve kept your dick in your pants this entire time. Why fuck the team now?â
âFirst of all, Lexi is my wife. Not some bunny I decided to have a good time with,â I grind out.
âShe said you met three years ago, and she didnât think you would remember her. So what was that about?â Vander Zee asks.
âItâs none of your fucking business, Coach.â
âIt is when my assistant coach is suddenly married to my goalie! Do you have any idea what the heat is going to look like coming down from the top? This isnât just about the two of you breaking every fucking rule we have.â
âThe team lawyer is married to a player, and two of the PR staff are involved with players,â I point out. Again.
âThis isnât the same. Weâve been over this already.â Vander Zee slices his hand through the air. âEvery time something like this happens, who do you think gets to deal with the team owner? Itâs not you who will end up on the chopping block. Itâs me and Fielding. I bring Lexi to the team, and you canât find the self-control not to go after her until the season is over? What do you think this will look like, Roman? Like bringing Lexi on wasnât enough of a risk without this?â
âLexi was an excellent choice for assistant coach, regardless of her gender.â I hold up a hand. âAnd my relationship with Lexi has nothing to do with her effectiveness in her role.â
âTo you, maybe. What do you think it looks like to those guys out there? To the fans? To the people who have been waiting for something like this to happen? You think she wonât be called a bunny? Or that they wonât question whether this was her motivation from the start, like Donnie did?â
âWatch your mouth, Vander Zee. Thatâs my wife youâre talking about. Our being married doesnât change all the positive things sheâs done for this team this year.â
He scoffs. âGet your head out of your ass, Roman. Alexandria just married a twenty-year veteran player during her first season as assistant coach. It doesnât matter whatâs true and whatâs not. She could be the best assistant coach out there, but all of that is eclipsed by this.â He motions to me. âYou might have saved her job by marrying her, but how will you protect her from the media? Are you ready for the backlash, Roman? Because Iâm not.â
I suppose heâs right. Gaining the support of the team will be hard enough. But the rest of the hockey-watching world is a whole different beast.
