If You Love Me: Chapter 34
If You Love Me (The Toronto Terror Series)
âItâll be fine.â Roman kisses the back of my hand.
Most of the time I can channel confidence, but nerves are winning. Iâve just said yes to marrying the man of my dreams. Iâm head over heels in love with Roman and I canât wait to spend the rest of my life with him. But weâve been hiding this from all the people we care about. Telling them weâre together is one thing, but explaining that weâre getting married as soon as possible is entirely another. I have a lot of feelings and they are all over the place.
Hammer and Hollis are on their way over, along with Dred, because if ever I needed the support of my friend, itâs now. Fee and Callie will be home from practice any minute. Roman ordered pizza, boneless wings, and dessert from Callie and Feeâs favorite restaurant. Hollis and Hammer are picking it up.
I donât know if I should be calling her Peggy or Aurora now. Iâm about to become her dadâs wife. And Iâm only eight years older than she is.
Roman cups my cheek in his palm and looks down at me with compassion and love. âWe will get through this, angel. No matter what, I will stand by your side and do everything I can to help you realize your goals. It doesnât matter how messy it is. Weâll have each other.â
Heâs my one constant in a sea of uncertainty. I voice the fear thatâs been eating at me ever since he called his daughter and asked her to come over. âWhat if Peggy isnât okay with this?â Losing my job would be a blow, but this worries me the most. Sheâs his number one, as she should be. What if she canât accept this? What if she believes, like Donnie, that Iâm in this for the wrong reasons? âI canât come between you.â
He brushes his lips tenderly over mine. âMy daughter is living with my best friend, and heâs planning to propose sometime soon. If anyone will be annoyed, itâll be Hollis because Iâve stolen his thunder. But heâs pretty used to it by now, considering Tristan and Dallas also beat him to the punch.â
I chuckle a little. âThatâs not what I mean.â
âWhatâs the worry, then?â
âPeople will make assumptions about our relationship and my motives.â
His smile is soft and sure. âMy daughter wonât be one of those people. And the ones who do can fuck themselves. We know how we feel about each other. The people who care about you and me and who we care about will see the truth and thatâs whatâs important. The rest is noise.â
âYouâre so calm.â I wish it would rub off on me.
âIf we had more time, Iâd help settle your anxiety,â he murmurs.
âIâll take a rain check on that.â We havenât even had time to celebrate the fact that weâre engaged. Itâs been triage since he walked through the door. Telling his daughter and my sisters makes it so much more real. And the stakes that much higher.
The condo door opens, and Callie comes barreling down the hall like a miniature hurricane. âI had a total shutout today during practice! Roman! This is the best surprise! Hi!â She launches herself at him.
âWay to go! A shutout is awesome!â Roman scoops her up and gives her a huge hug. âWe ordered pizza from your favorite place. It should be here soon.â
Fee comes down the hall, a questioning smile on her face. âHey, Roman. I didnât know you were coming over. You two having a strategy meeting?â She glances between us.
âSort of.â I laugh, and it sounds reedy. âDred, Peggy, and Hollis are coming over, too.â
âOh yay! I love Dred.â Callie is all smiles.
âWhy donât you put your backpacks in your rooms, and you two can help me set the table?â I need to do something with this nervous energy. The girls love Roman. But itâs one thing to love having someone around sometimes, itâs another when theyâre suddenly part of their everyday, though.
âSure.â Fee gives me a funny look, and she and Callie disappear down the hall.
âIâm freaking out,â I whisper.
He brushes his lips against my temple. âItâll be fine. Youâll see.â
Dred shows up first, takes one look at me and says, âShitâs about to go down, isnât it?â
âYeah.â I hug her. âHollis and Peggy should be here soon.â
âOkay. Whatever you need. Iâve got your back.â She looks to Roman. âAnd yours, too, obviously.â
The pizza and Hollis and Peggy arrive a minute later. âDred! I didnât know you were coming over, too. I brought wine.â Hammer-Peggy-Aurora holds up a bottle of white. She hugs me and steps back, brows furrowing. âIs everything okay?â
âEverything is great!â Yeah, Iâm not convincing anyone. Iâm thrilled that the man of my dreams is finally going to be mine, but I wish we didnât have to spring the news on the people we both care the most about and hope they understand.
Hollis and Roman exchange a look.
Callie reappears, bouncing over to hug Hammer-Peggy-Aurora and Dred and tell them about her shutout today. Roman and Hollis continue to communicate with their eyebrows.
We bring the food to the table, and Hammer-Peggy-Aurora pours the wine. Roman and Hollis have beer, Callie has chocolate milk, and Fee sticks with water. I donât know why Iâm so focused on what everyone is drinking, other than my stress levels are through the roof.
âOkay. As cool as this is, whatâs the vibe going on here?â Fee is frustratingly perceptive and yet totally clueless.
âWe have something we need to tell you,â I blurt.
âWe as inâ¦?â Fee glances around the table.
âAs in Lexi and me.â Roman covers my hand with his.
All eyes at the table focus on his fingers curved around mine.
Hammer-Peggy-Auroraâs eyes flare, and her back straightens. Hollis stretches his arm across her chair and gently runs his finger down the nape of her neck. Fee says nothing. Callie looks gleeful. Dred looks like sheâs ready for anything. That makes one of us.
âIâve asked Lexi to marry me,â Roman states, calmly, matter-of-factly.
âAnd I said yes.â
âYeah, you did.â Dred nods her approval.
âUhhhâ¦â Hammer-Peggy-Auroraâs eyes are uncommonly wide.
âHoly shit,â Fee mutters.
âMy birthday wish came true!â Callie claps.
âWho found out?â Hollis asks.
âDonnie,â Roman replies.
Hammer-Peggy-Auroraâs head whips around. Her jaw goes slack as she registers Hollisâs lack of surprise. âFound out what?â
âThat guyâs been gunning for Lexiâs job from day one,â Hollis says flatly.
âFound out what?â Callie echoes.
âThat Roman and Lexi are in love. Sheâs not supposed to be in love with a player on the team,â Fee says helpfully. âDo I get to be a bridesmaid?â
âCan I be the flower girl?â Callie bounces in her seat.
âYou knew about this, and you didnât tell me?â Hammer-Peggy-Aurora crosses her arms and gives Hollis an unimpressed look.
âPrincessââ
âDonât you dare Princess me! We just went through this! You kept this from me!â
âPeggy, honey, you have to understandâ ââ
âOh, I understand all right. Hollis gets to know, and I get to be the one in the dark.â She gives her father and Hollis a look that would incinerate most men. Then she scans the rest of the table. âAnd Dred doesnât look surprised either!â
âWe were hoping to avoid this until the season was over. Itâs not personal, HamâPegâI donât know what Iâm supposed to call you, and Hammer feels really weird,â I admit.
âYou can call me Aurora.â
My chin wobbles. For a moment I try to compose myself, but then I remember the conversation I had with Roman about it being okay to show my real feelings in front of the people I care for the most. And if ever there was a time to let my feelings show, itâs now. So when that tear made of fear and worry slips out, I donât try to hide it. âI am so sorry your dad had to keep this from you, and completely understand if you feel blindsided. But I also feel like you might understand how difficult this has been. We tried so hard to not fall, but it just becameââ Roman squeezes my hand and settles my nerves with one touch. ââimpossible. And Dred isnât in the Terror office, so she felt safe. She also figured it out without me even saying a word.â
âIâm an annoyingly perceptive observer.â Dred steps right in to defend me.
âIâm sure youâre shocked and hurt. Itâs reasonable if you need time, Aurora, but please know that I love Roman, and he loves me. I wish the timing was different, but it doesnât change the fact that I want to spend the rest of my life with him. I already lost him once, the idea of losing him again is unfathomable.â More than the idea of losing my job.
She straightens. âWhat does that mean? You already lost him once?â
I exchange a glance with Roman.
âI met Lexi at a baseball game in New York. You were visiting your mom, and I decided to take a trip.â
Aurora looks between us, and her brow arches, then her eyes narrow. âHow long ago was this?â
âThree and a half years,â I reply.
âIn the summer between first and second year?â Understanding dawns. âYou were so broody when I came back from my trip with mom. Wow. Youâve been holding a torch all this time.â
âBasically, yeah,â Roman and I say at the same time.
Auroraâs face softens, and she reaches across the table, taking my other hand. âI get it. Heâs a great guy.â
âThe best,â I agree.
âThis still hurts,â she whispers.
âIâm so sorry,â I whisper back.
She gives me a watery smile, then turns that brokenhearted expression on her dad. âI am so, so sorry for keeping you in the dark for as long as I did last season. I understand now in a way I couldnât before.â
âKiddo,â Roman says softly.
âYouâre an amazing dad. I adore you. And thisââ She motions between us. ââthis is wonderful. Iâve been secretly shipping you for months.â
âWait, what?â Roman looks confused.
âIâve been shipping you too!â Callie adds.
Fee raises her hands. âAlso, same.â
âDoes this mean Hammer will be our sister, too?â Callie is practically out of her mind with excitement.
Aurora turns her bright, beautiful, and slightly wobbly smile on Callie. âThatâs right. Weâll all be a family.â
âI canât even process that.â I donât just gain a husband, my sisters gain a father figure and a sister, and the entire, wonderful support system of love that comes with them. Itâs more than Iâve ever dared to dream of.
âI love this team so much,â Dred says.
Aurora rolls her shoulders back and taps her lip. âSo, just for the sake of clarity, how many years are there between you?â
âIâm twenty-nine and I turn thirty in the summer,â I say.
âAnd, Dad, how about you?â She props her hands on her chin and smiles angelically.
âI know where youâre going with this, Peggy.â
âJust humor me and answer the question Dado.â
Roman gives her a look. âIâm forty.â
âOh dude, this is gold,â Dred chuckles.
âHuh.â Aurora bats her lashes. âSo youâre a decade older than Lexi. Interesting.â
âWhy is that interesting?â Callie asks, so sweetly unaware.
âBecause Hollis is twelve and a half years older than Hammer,â Fee says helpfully.
Roman opens and closes his mouth. Shakes his head. âThe irony is not lost on me, kiddo.â
âI accept your apology,â Aurora says cheekily. âSo, how soon are you tying the knot?â
âAs soon as possible.â Roman squeezes my hand.
âLike, this needs to happen ASAP?â Aurora clarifies.
âIdeally, yes. We want to get ahead of Donnie and the no-fraternization policy.â Roman explains. âAnd the fewer people involved the better.â
âSo only the people at this table who know?â Hollis asks.
âWeâre the only ones who know the secret?â Callie seems to love this idea.
âThatâs right. But it wonât be a secret for long.â My stomach twists uncomfortably. This is getting really real. But the most important people are behind us. And thatâs what matters. Roman and I will belong to each other, and whatever happens after thatâ¦weâll handle it.
Roman slides his hand under my braid and gives the back of my neck a light squeeze.
âIâll be right back.â Aurora pushes away from the table.
For a moment I think she needs a minute because sheâs emotional, but she returns with her phone. âWe need to make a list. Iâm assuming weâre either going to a justice of the peace or having a friend perform this ceremony.â She slides back into her chair beside Hollis.
She hasnât looked at him once since we dropped this bomb and she found out he already knew. I sincerely hope the secret heâs been keeping hasnât done damage to their relationship. The ripple effect has the potential to be huge in so many ways. I desperately want to limit the pain we cause the people we love.
âMy sister has a friend who works at the courthouse. I can make a call now, if you want,â Hollis offers.
âThat would be great,â Roman replies.
Hollis excuses himself.
âYou have practice until, what? Eleven tomorrow?â Aurora asks us.
âThatâs right.â
âOkay.â She taps her lip with her stylus. âIâm clearing my schedule tomorrow.â
âWhat will you tell Hemi?â I ask.
âThat I need to take a personal day. Which isnât a lie, and by the time Iâm back at work, this will all be out in the open. Iâll come up with a PR plan to help mitigate, but this will likely be a bit of a shâpoopstorm. Weâll deal with that as required. While youâre at practice in the morning, Iâll take the girls dress shopping.â
âI have tomorrow off already, so I can come with youâor tackle whatever else needs to be done,â Dred offers.
âGreat. Itâll be easier with the two of us. We can grab flowers and all the other important things weâll need. How does that sound?â She directs the question at Callie and Fee.
âDo I get to wear a fancy princess dress?â Callie is all enthusiasm.
âYou sure do,â Dred replies.
âSounds good to me.â Fee nods, eyes wide.
âPerfect. Weâll have a great time.â Aurora taps away on her phone. âDad, when we get home, weâll take your tux down to get steamed and your shoes polished.â She adds that to her list. âLexi, after practice the five of us will get you a dress off the rack, and Iâll make hair appointments. While weâre doing that, Dad, you can take Hollis with you to pick out an engagement ring and wedding bands.â
Hollis returns, phone still in hand. âHow is four oâclock at city hall tomorrow?â
I look to Roman.
âDoes that give you enough time to do everything?â he asks.
âI have to defer to Aurora on this, because I have no idea.â
âWeâll make it work,â she promises.
Hollis squeezes her shoulder. âFour works. Thanks. Weâll see you then.â He ends the call. âYouâll be married tomorrow.â
