Chapter 10

10. The Night Is Ours

Little Lies

As soon as Rory walks through the front door, I notice the glow of someone who was fucked very thoroughly the night before.

"Fuck! They are insatiable," I say as I leap from the couch, grabbing at her arms and inspecting her to make sure those two men didn't play too rough with her. She looks good from what I can tell, but she also looked like she's sore as fuck. How I wish I was getting dick like her. Instead I'm all wrapped up in this drama with an asshole millionaire that is intent on ruining any chance of me getting with his brother.

"Tell me about it," she sighs, slumping down onto the couch. I almost don't notice the slight wince across her face.

Rory pulls out her phone and scrolls through instagram while she recounts her night, leaving out a lot of the details for sure. While I was out having a traumatising dinner, she was all cozy in their penthouse apartment on billionaires row. God, I would kill for a life like that. Maybe Rory will end up marrying them and I could come visit some days.

"How was your night? Did you end up going back to his?" She asks, flicking me an intrigued gaze.

I scrunch my face and collapse onto the couch beside her. "It was a disaster. Turns out Holland left his phone at home, and it was his stupid brother who was playing tricks with me. I mean, you'd think being CEO and a workaholic, he wouldn't have time for petty things like that. But apparently he does!" My frustration is taking over my body and making me tense, it's been months since I've had sex. I should've noticed something was up when Alex stopped wanting to do things with me altogether. I thought he just wanted a break or something, not fucking my roommate!

My lip quivers, making me even angrier. I shouldn't be crying over that stupid guy. The only thing I should be upset about is that he wasted months of my time. And that's months I won't ever get back. I need to get back onto the scene, and while I thought Holland would do, clearly it's going to be harder than I expected. And I need someone now.

As much as I want to play these stupid games with Leon and teach him who truly has the power, I'm just wasting even more of my time. "I think I might go out tonight and find someone—I'm just so fucking horny it's ridiculous." I huff.

"The vibe ain't doing it for you anymore?" Rory laughs.

"Nope. I need a dick. And quick."

"Why don't we go out tonight then? Sure, it's a Tuesday night but Fever has a rave on tonight and I'm sure they'll be some hot, rich pricks who are ready to fuck the first thing they see."

I narrow my gaze at Rory. "Wow, that makes me feel so great."

"I don't mean like—You know what I mean!"

I nod my head and lead back into the couch. "Yeah, maybe that'll be a good idea. I guess Fever did just have those renovations, so it won't be as much as a dump as it used to be." I try to reason.

"Exact—"

I turn to Rory and give her a strange expression. Her eyes have gone wide and she's staring at her phone like she's seen the most juicy piece of gossip. "What are you looking at?" I snatch her phone from her hands, and she tries to grab it back, but I'm too quick. My eyes rake over the instagram pitot from some celebrity news outlet. It's a blurry image looking through the window of a restaurant. Two people standing real close to each other, the man looking like he's kissing the cheek of the woman. But I know better. I know what is really going on behind that picture. Because I am in it.

Fuck.

Turns out that I wasn't being paranoid and the paparazzi actually were taking photos of me. Or more precisely, Leon.

"Tell me that isn't you," Rory commands, staring at me.

"Um—"

"Oh my gosh, I so knew you guys were going to be enemies to lovers or something like that," her mouth curls into a smile, and she begins to jump up and down. "Oh my gosh, you little sneak trying to keep this from me."

"No! You've got it all wrong, it isn't what it looks like."

"And what's that?" She raises a brow skeptically.

"He caught me at a bad time and was confronting me about going on the date..." I explain the whole situation, and slowly the glee falls from her face. "He was threatening me. Hardly anything romantic." I roll my eyes. I think that man would die before showing any sort of romantic affection to anyone on this earth, let alone me. I don't think he has a kind bone in his body.

"Shit, well whatever this is, is making it look like you guys are in some kind of illicit affair. At least no one would really recognise it's you."

"That's not the point though, this is going to make him even more eager to be a pain in my life. If he sees this, I don't even know what he's going to do."

"Surely he doesn't follow the tabloids." Rory tries to reason. And then suddenly it looks like an idea has struck her. "Maybe I could ask Nikolai or Alexei to look into it, I'm sure they have connections and would be able to get it taken down for you."

I look at her with bewilderment. Surely they don't have that much power. "You don't have to do that for me, really." I say. She only just met these guys the other week, I don't want her asking favours on behalf of me. I don't want them to think I'm that kind of person, let alone Rory. She's the sweetest person I know. Which is of course why she's offering this before thinking it through.

"Of course I will! I'm sure they'll be happy to do it." She gives me her big smile and I can't help but nod my head.

"Alright, thank you Rory. Though if it's too hard, then it's really alright. Like you said, it's hard to tell if it's even me." Only those closest to me could. And I guess that's what I'm most worried about.

Just as she's about to open her mouth, my phone starts vibrating and going off on the coffee table. I pick it up to find an unknown number, though it's not one that I recognise. I don't think it would be him. He wouldn't be so brazen as to call me so soon. At least I hope. So clicking the answer button, I bring it up to my ear. "Hello, this is Phoebe speaking."

"Phoebe, it's Nikolai. I'm calling about the interview."

I can feel my heart beating faster and my palms getting sweaty. Instantly anticipation weighs on my shoulders and I don't know whether I should be terrified or excited. Rory looks at me anxiously, and with a questioning look. "Hey, Nikolai. Yes of course," I say, making Rory's eyes widen and a mischievous smirk come across her lips.

"Would you be able to come in tomorrow morning, nine o'clock, same place, to discuss some things?" His stern voice questions. This man is just as intimidating over the phone as he is in real life.

"Yes, that works for me."

"I'll see you then."

Before I can even get another word out, he hangs up the phone.

"Oh my gosh, so what's happening?" Rory asks enthusiastically.

"Nothing has been made certain so calm yourself, he just wants me to come in tomorrow morning to discuss some things." Whatever the hell that means.

"So you basically got the job!" She squeals, jumping up and pulling on my hands to jump along with her. "Even more reason to go out and celebrate tonight."

"Yeah, I don't know. I feel like I should stay in tonight. I don't want to be hungover when I go in tomorrow."

"C'mon, when has that ever stopped you." She questions. "Plus, if you're really unsure about it, just don't drink. Get some dick and then get out. Easy, you could be snug in your bed by eleven pm. Easy peasy."

I try to give her a disapproving stare, but it's so hard. "Alright. I guess you bring up a good argument." Though I didn't give up much of a fight. I really hope I don't regret this.

***

"What is it?" I ask Rory from the passenger seat of the uber. Her face is scrunched up, and she looks slightly... scared?

"I'm sure it's nothing, Nik and Alexei are just wondering if I want to come over tonight. I told them I couldn't and now they're asking why."

"What's the problem with that?"

"Well, I don't know if they'll like that I'm going to a club."

"Huh?" I question, giving her a strange look. "What do you mean? You can do whatever you want, you don't need their permission and you only just met them the other day. Regardless if you're going to get with anyone tonight, they don't own you. Just lie."

Rory looks at me incredulously as if I've just told her to commit murder. "I'm not going to get with anyone tonight."

"Then you have nothing to worry about." I state.

"But I can't just lie, what if they find out?"

"How would they find out? And so what if they did? What are they going to do about it?" She gives me a look as if she knows exactly what they'd do, but nods slowly anyway.

"Yeah, okay. It'll be fine." She turns her phone off and tucks it away back in her bag.

"This night is ours," I say, taking her hands and squeezing them. "Just ours."

"You're right." She says, just as we pull up to the curb of the club. We shuffle out of the car, thanking the driver.

The outside of the club is rather nondescript, and to anyone who didn't know any better, it looks just like a normal city street. We follow down an alleyway until we come across a dingy door and open it, slipping inside. Instantly we are bombarded with hazy smoke and the smell of bodies and alcohol. I can ever smell hints of weed. We follow down a dark corridor until we hit the end of the line to enter the club.

The sound of music is foggy through the walls, but the anticipation of everyone and the chatter of voices is making me eager to hit the dance floor. The closer we get to the entrance, the more impatient we become, and when we finally reach the burly security guards and get allowed into the club, we look at each other with wide smiles.

It's going to be a wild night.
