Chapter 12

1.1

The Gay Project

They've been friends for over a month and Louis's never been to Harry's house. He's seen the outside only one time.

So, Harry agreed to have Louis over.

It was a Saturday afternoon and Louis had just gotten back from taking his sister's to the mall. His phone chimed with a text from Harry, but that wasn't unusual.

Are you still at the shopping mall? xH

Just got back, actually. Wanna come over? -Lou

Louis tossed his phone on the bed and started pulling out some things he bought. He blushed a bit, still unsure of the items he purchased, but a pool of excitement filled his stomach.

Once his phone buzzed again, he leaned over and grabbed it, surprised at the reply.

Why don't you come over here? Mum is dying to meet my new best friend. You'll love her. xH

Louis nervously scratched the back of his neck before replying.

Yeah, are you sure? You've never had me over. -Lou

Just promise me one thing. xH

Anything for you, H. -Lou

Don't ask a ton of questions when you get here, okay? You'll understand when you arrive. Be here soon, my mum will make us tea, yeah? xH

Yeah, let me finish putting away my new clothes and clean up a bit. It'll be, like, an hour, if that's fine. -Lou

Of course. See you then. (: xH

Louis smiled, a little excited to see Harry's home. He finished putting away his new things before grabbing the quickest shower he could. After blowdrying and brushing his hair, picking out and putting on an outfit, and telling his aunt his plans, Louis headed over to Harry's house.

The drive was about twenty minutes, which wasn't too bad. Once he arrived, Louis took five minutes to actually prepare himself and get out of the car.

He nervously got out and knocked on the door, fidgeting with his hands. He heard shuffling, a yelp, and then a woman was opening the door. A breathless Harry was a few feet behind her, hands on his knees, glaring up at the woman.

"Hello," Louis said, not able to contain his giggle.

"Hello! So, you're, Louis, correct?" The woman said, holding out a hand. Louis took it, nodding. "You can call me Anne. I'm Harry's mother. He talks so much about you."

"Mum," Harry grumbled, finally standing up and reaching out to take Louis's hand, pulling him inside. This gesture surprised Louis immensely.

"Alright, Louis, would you like some tea?" Anne asked, leading the two boys to a large room with nice, white couches, bookshelves, a coffee table, and a television.

"Sure, Anne, that would he great!" Louis said with a small smile, sitting beside Harry on the couch.

Once Anne left the room, Harry breathed out a sigh. "She knows we aren't really a couple and that I'm doing this to help you."

Louis widened his eyes, letting go of Harry's hand in shock.

"Harry! She's going to pity over me and think I'm a wimp!"

"No, Lou, I... I told her how strong you were. You are, you're so strong, and she understands that this was all my idea, okay? I knew you'd be upset that I told her, but I can't lie to my own mother," Harry rambled, looking close to crying.

Louis sighed, reaching a hand out to twirl a loose piece of Harry's hair absently.

"S'okay," he mumbled, looking Harry in the eyes. "I suppose that makes sense. I can't tell my aunt the truth because she'll freak out and think this is wrong."

Harry shrugged grabbing the hand that Louis was using to twirl Harry's loose strand.

"You're my best friend, Lou. I can't let anyone hurt you. My mother understands this, okay, she's going to love you."

Louis nodded, laughing softly. "Are you sure you aren't gay, Harry?"

Harry gasped, thumping Louis's nose. "No fucking way, I like boobs."

Louis laughed, shaking his head. "You could like both."

Harry rolled his eyes, letting go of Louis's hand, mumbling, "Definitely not."

Anne walked in after that, carrying a tray that held three cups and a few tarts.

"Homemade almond and honey tarts with Yorkshire tea- Harry said Yorkshire is your favorite."

Louis nodded, thanking her as he took a cup, spooning the scoops of sugar into it and sipping it.

Harry immediately reached for a tart, biting into it. He smiled a dimpled smile as Louis watched him, and Louis smiled right back.

Anne watched without a word, watched as Harry smirked, sipping his finger into the filling and holding his thumb out for Louis to taste it.

It was so obviously weird that Harry and Louis didn't even notice how peculiar the action looked to an onlooker.

"Good," Louis praised, smiling at Anne, who smirked back.

"Is it?" She quipped.

"Yummy," Harry agreed, biting into it again.

As Louis and Anne drank tea, Harry finished his snack. It was pretty silent until Louis spoke up.

"You two look wildly alike."

Harry chuckled, shaking his head. "People tell us that often."

"But it's true."

Harry went and sat beside his mother on the love seat, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and smirking.

Anne, smacked Harry's thigh playfully. Harry responded by ruffling her hair and she gasped, snatching his hat away.

"Harry Edward, don't mess with my hair!"

Harry let out a (fucking) giggle, snatching his hat back and shoving it over his messy hair, smirking as he picked up his mug.

At the same exact time, Anne and Harry took a sip of tea, and Louis laughed as Harry spit it back into the cup, laughing.

"Okay, that's horrid!"

"What!?" Louis gasped, widening his eyes. "Yorkshire is amazing!"

"It's shit!" Harry laughed, earning another smack from his mother. "Oi! Bloody hell-" Another smack. "Okay, okay! I'm done!"

Louis was laughing hard, holding his stomach with one hand and the handle of his mug with the other. Harry smiled at the sight, shaking his head.

"Funny, Lou?"

"Yes," Louis said through a thick laugh, breathing harshly. "What idiot curses in front of his mother?"

Harry rolled his eyes as Anne laughed.

"Okay, whatever. Wanna go up to my room, Lou?"

Louis shrugged, setting down his nearly empty tea mug, thanked Anne again, and followed Harry up the the stairs. The walls were covered in picture frames, catching Louis's curiosity.

Harry turned, noticing Louis stopped, and watched as Louis placed his thumb over a picture.

"Oh. That's, um, Mum, my sister, and I," Harry mumbled.

"Your sister?"

"Yes, her name is Gemma."

"Where-"

"She's moved out already. Let's go," Harry said curtly, turning on his heel to continue to his room.

Louis followed, looking at all of the pictures in curiosity.

Harry and Gemma were featured in nearly every picture with Anne somewhere in there. There was even a man in some of the photos, but Louis noticed that the older pictures featured a different man than the newer ones. Louis also noticed that the 'newer' ones were about a year or two ago.

"Louis," Harry called, and the small lad flinched, going into Harry's room.

It wasn't really what Louis expected, but that's mainly because Louis hadn't thought about it.

The walls were a forest green, matching the outfits the two wore for Halloween. The bed covers and pillows were also that shade of green, but it featured white sheets and pillows as well.

There was a desk cluttered with school books, a MacBook, and pens. A bookshelf lined one wall, but, instead of books, it was lined with Snapback hats. A dresser was in the corner with one drawer half open and the top holding picture frames of Harry and his sister, friends, and mother.

Louis was surprised to see a picture of himself with Harry, taken about two weeks ago, when Louis and Harry went to the park. A middle-aged woman had taken the picture for them.

Louis smiled, sitting onto Harry's bed. "I like it."

Harry smiled shyly, sitting at the desk, and looking over at Louis. "Thank you. I'm rather fond of seeing you on my bed."

Louis busted into laughter and Harry blushed, flinging a pen at Louis, hitting him in the chest.

"That's not what I meant, you knocker! I'm just used to being in your purple fucking bedroom!"

Louis gasped, flinging the pen back. Harry laughed, up and tackling Louis in seconds, straddling lap and pinching the smaller boy all over his stomach and hips.

"Ouch, Harry!" Louis whined. "Get off! You weigh a ton!"

"Says the boy whose arse weighs more than the rest of him!" Harry laughed, making Louis blush.

Harry smirked, proud to make the sassy boy speechless, and climbed off, sitting beside Louis and falling back. Louis follows the gesture, surprised to see posters on the ceiling- he hadn't noticed them before.

They were mostly indie bands, but the one above Louis's head looked quite like a picture of an attic.

"What's that, Harry?"

Harry breathed out a sigh, turning his head to face Louis an smiling softly.

"Well, I guess I can start that little piece of information by saying the house that I was brought into after I was born was the same house I left when I moved here. We've never left it. In that house, there was an attic. My sister is four years older than me, but she was always my best friend. We lived in that attic. See all of the toys? That teddy right there was my obsession." Harry paused to let out a laugh before continuing. "And, look, the telly was on Scooby-Doo. My sister and I loved that show... I miss the attic. Packing it up was hard."

Louis turned to look back at Harry, smiling a little.

"Y'know, Harry, at first glance, you'd seem like a douche bag who just fucks around and cares nothing about anyone but himself."

Harry snorted. "Thanks."

"But," Louis snapped, hitting Harry playfully in the chest. "You're actually a sweet guy who respects people for who they are. And I respect you for that."

"You didn't deserve what people were saying to you, Louis," Harry said quietly.

"Maybe not, but you didn't deserve for me to judge you, either. I'm sorry."

Harry shrugged, looking back at the ceiling. "It's okay, mate, I don't blame you. It's just how life works."

Louis agreed, closing his eyes.

Yeah, life was pretty screwed up sometimes.
