Chapter 22

My Best Friend's Brother | ✔

After dinner, we began to get ready for the drive in. I got blankets, pillows, and pulled out a sweatsuit I had. It was a nice light blue. I tied my hair up into a bun before doing my makeup in the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, I realized that I sunburnt a little, so I applied a bit of aloe vera gel. I wanted to do a simple look today, so I only ended up using mascara, brow gel, and concealer.

"I never knew you had freckles." I turn around to see Matthew, leaning against the doorframe.

"I do. They come out in the summer."

"They're nice."

"Thanks."

The silence drowns us as Hailey paces into and out of the bathroom. If she wasn't here I know I'd have my arms around him, like last night before the party.

"What are you stressed out about?" He asks Hailey, as she walks back into the bathroom for the twentieth time in a minute, staring at her phone.

"Does this sound needy?" She asks, showing us both a string of text messages. We lean in to get a better look.

"Colton? Really?" He rolls his eyes.

"Shut up. He's hot now."

"Is he?"

"Do you have any taste in guys?"

He looks at her and shrugs as in he was saying "fair point." She continues to pace around until she freaks out when he reads it.

"Just don't make it awkward cause we're going to be in a car with them in thirty minutes." I shout. She screams and then runs back to us.

"I think we're going to hook up at the drive in."

"Gross. There's other people in the car." Matthew gags.

"Not with you there, stupid. I'm going to be in his car. You guys go without me with Alexis."

I like Alexis. I only met her last night, but I could tell she was a good friend of Hailey and Matthew. Matthew's face went red when Hailey said that it was going to be just us, though. I tap his arm and he shivers at my touch. I know Alexis knows about our relationship, but I trust her. I don't believe she has any motive to ruin it.

When we leave, I offer to drive, but Matthew insists that he drives. When we pull out of the driveway, we wave bye to Hailey, who was going to be picked up by Colton in a few minutes. When we get onto the main road, Matthew keeps one hand on the steering wheel, and puts the other on my hand.

Every touch gives me an extra heartbeat.

We pull into Alexis's driveway and she gets into the car. Matthew sees her eyeing his hand placement and he moves them back onto the steering wheel. I make small talk and learn a bit more about Alexis. She prefers dogs over cats. She doesn't care for blueberries, but she likes strawberries. She didn't answer much about the questions I asked regarding her school, so I didn't continue.

When we get to the drive through, we pull into the ticket station. I buy the tickets, but he says he's going to buy the snacks. We find out where Luka and Leo are and we pull in next to them. We get out of the car and walk over to the snack station.

"Meet some of my friends," he says to Matthew and me, "This is Lily and Talia."

"Hey." I say.

Lily is slightly taller than me. She has blonde hair and is wearing a floral tank top with pink sweat shorts. Talia is shorter than me and had big eyes that complimented her face nicely. She had a hoodie with stars on it and cargo sweatpants. Her light brown hair was wavy in a nice high pony.

"Hello! Are you new this summer?" Lily asks me.

"Yeah, I've been up before, but this is my first time here for a whole summer."

"Nice! I love summers here. Do you have a lake house?"

"No, I'm staying at my best friend's house. Hailey." I notice Lily's face come to a soft smile.

"Hailey Graham? She's so sweet! I need to catch up with her, I miss her!"

"I have money so I can buy the snacks for our car. Do you guys have money?" Talia asks, interrupting our conversation. I don't mind though.

"Yeah, I've got money." Matthew replies. When it's our turn to order, Matthew gets a red slushy, I get a blue, and Alexis gets a soft drink. We get a large popcorn, nachos, and two bags of candy. We get into the car and I grab a big blanket to wrap around myself. We open the windows and turn the air conditioning off. The movie starts right when Hailey and Colton pull in beside us.

"If they're going to hook up can they at least park a bit away?" Matthew says, disgusted.

"I mean, they're not doing anything right now." I reply.

It was only a matter of time. Five minutes into the movie, we hear kissing noises. We all look over as soon as we hear it. A honking noise startles me, I look over at Matthew who's hand is on the horn. I flick his arm.

"What. It's disgusting." Matthew says.

We turn back and see Hailey, giving her brother the middle finger while continuing to kiss Colton. Matthew honks again, and I see Luka looking over at us, confused. An employee not far from us walks over when Matthew honks a third time.

"Excuse me, sir? Could you stop honking please?" She asks, politely.

"Yeah sure. My bad." He replies, apologetically. She warns him that he will be asked to leave the next time it happens before she walks back to where she was sitting.

"If you keep making out with Colton in front of us I'll make out with Morgan in front of you." He shouts at her. My world pauses. Everyone stops what they're doing and looks over at Matthew, who said that a little too loudly. Hailey pulls away and looks up at him, disgusted. I feel my heart beat fast and I start breathing a little too fast.

"Okay. Not funny. That's disgusting." She says, more than annoyed at him.

"You know what's disgusting? Me being forced to listen to your noises." He snaps back at her. Hailey closes the window's of Colton's car, before continuing what they were up to.

"Matthew." I whisper under my breath.

"Don't worry. I would've played it off fine. And look at that, she closed her windows." He whispers back.

I roll my eyes before looking back at him, who's looking at me with an unnecessarily charming smile. I laugh a bit quietly, getting rid of my nerves, before we both look back at the movie screen.

After the movies. We get out of the car to stretch. The musicals were good, some of the songs Alexis and I even sung along to together. I go to the garbage can to throw away the popcorn bag, nacho tray, and candy bags. I have my drink in my hand and so does Matthew. Alexis went over to Luka's car, since he offered to drive her home. The garbage bin was behind the snack building. We walk behind it and throw away our garbage.

"They must have emptied it recently." Matthew says, observing it.

"Gross." I reply, as he walks in front of me, putting his hands on my hips.

"You know what was gross," he says quietly, "my sister hooking up with my childhood best friend beside me. It was gross and weird."

"Well you're with your sister's best friend." I reply.

"That's different."

"How's it different?"

"Cause you're different. We're different. We're not just hooking up." He says. I stare up into his eyes, his pupils.

"Would you ever want to?" I ask.

"What, hook up?" He replies

I see him open his lips to continue his sentence. But he says nothing. Instead he cups my cheeks and pulls me in for a kiss.
