56: Quinn
Finding Myself
Seeing Riley so close to Mason again struck a nerve. I get they are friends, but it doesn't make things easier for me. I still feel a little jealous and insecure when they are together. I'm scared she will go back to him and leave me in the dust.
I know I shouldn't feel like that, but it's a thought that pops up in my head every once in a while. However, I know it would be shitty of me to hold that over Riley.
It's not right to judge someone based of of their sexuality. If I don't want anyone to base their judgement only on the fact that I'm gay I can't judge Riley for her past. I can't judge her for being with Mason, or liking guys or for possibly being bisexual. Riley is her own person, she's kind, funny, smart and amazing. She would never cheat on me, that's not her. She would also never intentionally hurt me, I know she wouldn't. Riley is of the best people in the world. She means everything to me. So, I cannot push my insecurities on her, that would be fucked up to do.
"Earth to Quinn," someone says trying to get my attention. I snap out of it and look at Megan. She's trying hard not to laugh, she probably knows what I was focusing on and why. I say sorry and do the warm up with my team.
I try to focus on practice, but I can't help but glance over at Riley in the bleachers every once in a while. Sometimes we is looking and it makes me blush and I make a mistake. Other times she is focused on her work and I wish she would look at me again. Megan playfully scolds me when I'm not paying attention which happens every ten minutes.
Finally practice ends I'm about to race over to Riley for a hug, but I'm stopped by Megan. She tells the others that she needs to talk to me about today's practice and pulls me aside so no one can hear. "Jeez can you make it anymore obvious that you're into Riley," she teases.
"Wait, do people really think that?" I panic.
"No, you guys are okay. Everyone just thinks that you two are best friends," she assures. "Would it really be bad if people were to find out though?"
"Not everyone is like you, Megan. Some people would never understand or be mean like my parents," I respond.
"Wait, what? You're parents are against you being gay?"
"Yeah, they didn't take the news well. So, I'm staying with Riley for the week until things calm down with my parents," I explain.
"Well shit, I'm so sorry, Quinn. I never thought your parents wouldn't be understanding of you. You're awesome and if they can't see it then it's their loss. Know that you'll always have an ally in me. If you ever need anything, like a place to stay, just ask," she says which makes me feel so good. The kindness that Megan is displaying is so moving and I can't help but start to tear up.
"Oh, Q. Come here," she says pulling me in for a hug. "It will be okay. Things will get better. Your parents will come around," she assures me.
"Thank you, Megan. For everything, you've done so much for me and Riley. I don't know how to repay you," I whisper.
"No need, you guys are my friends. I would do anything for you two, don't forget that," she adds. "Now, go see your girl, she looks impatient to talk to you," Megan teases.
I say bye to her and the others on the team before walking over to Riley. However, I'm stopped by someone who taps my shoulder. I turn around and face Joshua. Great, this is not at all what I wanted to deal with now.
"Hey, Quinn. How are you?" He asks.
"I'm doing good, thank you. I hope you're good too. I'm sorry, but I need to go," I try to explain.
"Oh wait, I just wanted to talk about us," he says grabbing my hand. I give him an annoyed look and he immediately let's go. However, he continues talking, "you see, we never really talked much after our date. I wanted to change that. I know the first date wasn't great, but I promise the second one will be so much better."
"Look, Joshua, I'm sorry, but I don't want to date anyone now," I lie. "I'm just need ready for a relationship at this point," I add. I'm lying big time right now, but I don't care. I really don't want to continue talking to Joshua, I just don't find him interesting.
"Please just give me one more chance," he begs.
"What's going on here?" Riley says out of nowhere. I turn to her and the biggest smile comes on my face.
"Just wondering if we could do another date. If it makes you feel better, Quinn, we could do a double date with Riley and Mason again," Joshua suggests.
"Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen," Riley responds immediately. I face her and notice that her jaw is clenched and she is narrowing her eyebrows. She's giving Joshua a glare and I've never seen her quite like this before.
"Why not? Do you guys have busy schedules now? We can do it next week," Joshua continues. Riley looks like she's ready to lash out at him any second if it continues this whole date idea.
"Hey, Joshua, you left me back there alone to help coach pick up," Mason says as he walks over to us.
"Sorry, man. I was just trying to convince the girls to go on another double date," he tells Mason.
Mason glances at Riley who is still flaring at Joshua. Poor Mason looks absolutely lost at the situation happening in front of me. "Yeah, that's not happening," Mason says. I have to hold back my laugh at the fact that Mason and Riley said the same exact thing.
"What do you mean?" Joshua asks.
"Riley and I aren't together anymore," Mason declares.
"WAIT! WHAT!" Joshua responds.
"Okay, so I'm going to leave you to explain things to him Mason," Riley says as she helps me pick up my bag and we leave.
"Wait, what about our date, Quinn," Joshua adds. God when will he take the hint that I want nothing to do with me.
"It's a no," I respond coldly before walking alongside Riley.
"Come on, Quinn," Joshua says as he jogs to us.
"Dude, leave them alone. She said no already," Mason announces as he jogs over to us as well.
"Mason, stay out of it," Joshua says pushing him back.
"Quinn said no, why can't you get that into your thick skull," Riley growls at Joshua.
"You're probably the reason she doesn't want to go on a date with me," he directs at Riley. "What did you say about me?"
"Back off," Mason says getting in between Joshua and Riley.
"Whose side are you on," Joshua asks Mason who just rolls his eyes. "Just leave them alone. Quinn doesn't want anything with you, just accept that."
"I want to know why though," Joshua continues.
"Why does it matter. I just don't like you in that way, just get over it," I reply to him.
"You don't even know me though," he responds.
I'm getting tired of this shit, so I just grab Riley's hand and pull her away. We walk in the direction of the exit of the field so that we can be picked up her mom.
However, we don't get very far before I feel someone grab my other hand. They turn me around and I'm face to face with Joshua again. "Not so fast, we aren't done talking yet."
"Let her go, now," Riley says prying his hand off of mine.
"I'm getting so annoyed of you, bitch," he spits out at Riley.
Suddenly, Mason pulls Joshua away forcibly and holds him by the collar of his shirt. "If you ever fucking speak to Riley like that again or touch Quinn, I'm going to beat the shit out of you. Do you understand."
"What is your problem, Mason," Joshua whispers.
"Do you fucking understand!"
"Yes, yes, just let me go," Joshua mumbles out. Instead of letting go of his Joshua's shirt, Mason pushes him backward so he falls on the ground.
"I'm warning you, Joshua. If you mess with them, you mess with me," Mason clarifies and Joshua nods his head before getting up to walk away.
"Thank you, Mason," Riley and I say.
"No problem, anything for you guys. I'll always be there to protect you both, no matter what," he assures us.
Riley quickly gives him a hug before Mason leaves. He is an amazing guy, I can't believe I ever thought badly about him in the past. I'm happy that Riley had him all throughout high school.
We say bye to him and walk out of the field and head to the parking lot. Riley says that her mom should be there soon so that we can go back to her house to pick up her dad and go to the fair.
As we wait, I can't help but tease Riley a little bit. "So, you were totally jealous earlier."
Riley rolls her eyes and sighs. "Yes I was. I can't help it, I really like you," she admits shyly.
I smile and put my hand under her chin so that I can make her look at me. "You don't have to worry. I only have eyes for you," I reply before kissing her passionately.
Then we both realize that we are still in public and immediately move away from each other. We glance around to make sure the coast is clear and see no one. Riley and I start to chuckle and soon after her mom arrives. We hop into the car and I try to clear my mind of everything that went on today so that I can have fun.

Author note: I love Mason too much to have ever made him the bad guy. I wanted to show the differences between two guys who had nice first impression. Mason is actually a good person, however Joshua isn't exactly.
I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. It was interesting to also write a jealous Riley this time.
Once again, I will be doing a Q and A video soon. Ask me any more questions you might have.
