49: Riley
Finding Myself
We all finish eating and my dad suggests, "I know it's a school night, but I think it would be a good idea for all of us to watch a movie. We could watch a comedy."
"That's sounds like an amazing idea. My parents would never let me do that, they would make me study all night long," comments Quinn.
"Well, studying is important, but it shouldn't be everything. You need to look after yourself and have fun every once in a while," my mom explains to her.
Quinn's face softens and she replies with, "Damn. I think I was born in the wrong family."
My parents laugh before responding with, "Sometimes, we think Riley was born in the wrong family. This kid doesn't like to have fun, she only studies."
"Please help our daughter have more fun. Drag her out more often," my mom jokes.
"You guys are mean," I mumble out which just makes my parents laugh harder.
"Don't worry, now that I'm here I'll help you become more fun," Quinn teases as she puts her arms around me and pull me in close for a hug. I try to push her away because I'm annoyed, but she doesn't let go.
I smack her with a pillow and she gasps in surprise. That reaction just makes me smack her in the face with the pillow again. I start laughing and suddenly I get smacked in the face and I lean back in shock. I turn to face my dad as he laughs at me while he holds the pillow in my hand.
"How dare you betray me!"
"Oh god, you're so dramatic," comments Quinn.
"You guys are jerks," I say getting up.
"No don't leave, Riley. Come on, it was just a joke," my parents say. I'm not angry at all, I'm just standing up to pick a movie to play. However, Quinn is right, I'm very dramatic. So, I'll just play along for a bit.
"No, you guys have deeply hurt my feelings. I no longer what to be here," I reply trying to hold in my laugh.
My dad immediately gets up and picks me up. "Not happening, young lady. We demand you stay and watch a funny movie whether you like it or not." He carries me to the couch and drops me on Quinn who yelps out for help.
"Why punish me," Quinn croaks out beneath me and we all start laughing. I try to move of her, but she grabs onto my shirt then she wraps her arms around my waist. The act makes my heart pound like crazy and I try to hide my red face in her shoulder.
"Hurry up, put the movie on, I've got a hold of her!" Quinn yells to my dad. He runs over to a shelf and grabs a movie to put into the DVD player.
I try to push Quinn away so that I can get up to put the movie that I want to watch, but she refuses to let go of me. "Traitor!" I yell.
Quinn chuckles and says, "I'm not letting go, knowing you, you'll try to run."
"Jerk," I reply as I try to squirm out of her grasp which just makes her hold on me tighter.
"Go ahead and keep calling me names, I'm still not letting you go. Not now or ever," she replies with a smirk. I scowl at her and for a brief second she loosens her grip on me so that she can boop my nose. I instantly start laughing athe silly act and so does she.
"Nice job, Quinn," my dad says as he sits down on the couch next to my mom. I turn to face the television and notice that the movie is about to play. I wait a few seconds for the opening of the movie and realize that it was the one I was going to pick. I glance at my dad and he gives me a wink, he knows that I love this movie.
"Going to run or can I let go of you so that I can't actually breathe again," Quinn whispers near my ear which makes me shiver. I roll my eyes, but agree to the second option.
Quinn let's go of me and I move so that I'm not on top of her anymore. However, I stay next to her, I just don't want to be far from her.
We all focus on watching the movie and we laugh every now and then at the funny parts. I've seen this movie so many times, but some parts still making me laugh. Around thirty minutes into the movie I feel a sudden touch on my hand. I look over and notice that it's Quinn, she is lightly touching me. However, she refuses to look at me, she keeps her eyes glued onto the screen in front of us.
My heart is pounding, but I try to remain calm. I focus on the movie, but I can feel Quinn tracing a circle on my hand with her fingers. The act makes me shiver and get nervous. However, instead of pulling away I move my hand so that my palm is facing up. So, when Quinn goes to touch my hand again, I grab her fingers. She jumps a little from the movement, I guess she wasn't expecting me to do that.
I gently pull her hand closer so that I can intertwine our fingers. Then I glance over at Quinn and she looks at me with a small smile.
Suddenly we hear a snore from the other couch. Quinn and I look over at my parents who are both fast asleep on the couch. I laugh quietly so that they don't wake up and face Quinn. "Maybe we should turn off the movie and help your parents to bed," she suggests.
I agree and Quinn gets up to take the movie out while I gently shake my parents. My dad groans and turns over to continue sleeping, but my mom opens her eyes slowly. "You guys fell asleep, come on, let's get you guys to bed," I say as I try to lift my mom.
"No, it's fine, sweetie. I think we'll just take a nap for now and go up to bed in a little," my mom replies.
"What happens if you guys stay sleeping here?" I ask.
"It's fine, we have alarms on our phones," she replies as she starts to close her eyes. "Go to bed, Riley," my mom adds before she passes out on the couch alongside my dad.
I hold in my laugh and walk over to Quinn. "They want to stay here, I don't think either of them want to get up to walk up to bed."
"Your parents are just as stubborn as you," Quinn teases. I playfully push her and she follows me up to my room.
"You can take the bed, I'll sleep on the floor," I tell Quinn. This way I won't have to make a fool of myself next to her. I would be a shy mess and it would be so hard not to kiss her this time. Last time I barely had enough strength to not do it.
"Why? We've slept in the same bed before," she says.
"This time is different. I'm sick," I sheepishly reply.
Quinn rolls her eyes and says, "Riley, shut up. I know that you're not really sick."
"Whatvare you talking about! Yes I am," I lie.
"You're so fucking stubborn. Are you really going to keep this up?"
"Yes because I don't want to get you sick," I reply.
"Stupid, we already held hands downstairs or did you forget that already!"
I give her a dumbfounded expression, she's right. I totally forgot about that. Shit. My plan isn't working. "That was a slip up! You know what, I'm going to sleep somewhere else so that I don't get you even more sick!"
I turn in the direction of the door and start walking, however, Quinn stops me. She grabs my waist and pulls me back to the bed and throws me on it.
"This isn't fair, you're much stronger than me!" I say before I try to squirm out of her grasp. She pins my hands above my head to get me to stop and straddles me so that I stop moving.
"I don't care about fairness now, you're irrational," Quinn says.
"You're delusional!"
"What the fuck? How?" Quinn says.
"I don't know, I'm just saying anything that comes to mind!"
"Oh my god, shut up, Riley," she says.
"Get off then."
"No," she replies.
Fuck! She's too close to me. I need to get away, but I can't help that I want to stay like this. I can tell Quinn is so annoyed now, but she also looks so beautiful. You know what fuck everything.
"Fine," I reply before suddenly leaning up to kiss Quinn.
