12: Riley
Finding Myself
Quinn and I play for a good forty five minutes before I start crushing her in the game. She sucks or she's letting me win. I think it's the second because she's making horrible decisions in the game. She's not buying the properties that she should be getting and I'm taking them after.
"You're letting me win," I whine.
"I can't help it! You look too happy when you get properties and make me pay when I unfortunately land on your stuff," she replies.
"You know this game is supposed to spark hatred between people. You're supposed to be frustrated with me, not be cute and let me win everything," I say.
"Okay okay, I'll try now. Don't cry when I beat you," she teases.
I roll my eyes and her and respond, "In your dreams, Quinn. I'm not going down without I fight!"
"I wasn't counting on you being so bratty. Now I have to put you in your place," she counters.
"Go ahead and try, I won't go down without a fight."
Quinn looks at me in disbelief and says, "You're so feisty and Stubborn. It's both annoying and incredibly cute. It's like a kitten asking for a fight."
I slightly sneer at Quinn before hitting her with a pillow. "See what mean! You're asking for a fight," she teases.
I grab another pillow and start aiming it st her head and Quinn warns, "Don't you dare! Stop right now."
"Make me!" I say before throwing the pillow and she dodges it right in time.
"Oh that's it. You're done for you little asshole!" She yells before grabbing a pillow and charging at me with it.
I try to run, but I'm not fast enough. Quinn jumps on me and we both go tumbling down. She straddles me so that she can pin me down then she starts hitting me multiple times with the pillow.
"Give up!" She yells at me.
"Never," I yell pushing her to the side so I can get a pillow. We start wacking each other with the pillows while laughing hysterically at the same time.
"Time out, time out. I can't breathe," whine Quinn and we both stop the pillow fight to continue laughing.
"I win!" I say smiling down at Quinn who is lying on the floor.
"Not true. We paused!" She replies.
"That sounds more like you couldn't handle it," I tease.
She rolls her eyes at me tries to calm down her breathing. I sit down next to hear and hold my sides, they hurt from laughing so much.
"Are you guys okay? I heard yelling and a loud thump," says Quinn's mom who is standing at the door. She glances around the messy room and looks at us questioningly.
"We had a disagreement over monopoly," Quinn replies.
"Well, that makes sense. You guys didn't have to almost kill each other or destroy the room though. It looks like your problems are solved now," she says pointing at the board game. The pieces and cards are all over the place. I don't remember where my pieces were at and I doubt that Quinn does either.
"Well that sucks. I was going to beat you," Quinn comments.
"You were so behind on properties and money, there was no way you could make a comeback," I counter.
"Okay, I'm going back downstairs. I don't want to be in the middle of this," Quinn's mom says as she walks away laughing.
"Underdogs always make the best comebacks," Quinn adds.
"Not you. You were about to be begging for me to loan you money," I taunt.
"Nope," she replies defiantly. She gets closer to me so that her reply can seem more threatening. It does the opposite though, it makes me want her to come closer to me for some reason.
"Shut up, Quinn," I blurt out.
"Make me," she teases. We have an intense stare off and I start to get lost in her beautiful eyes. I know I would cave for her, so I do the childest thing possible. I grab a pillow and hit her in her face.
"Oh my god, I'm going to kill you," she replies launching at me playfully. I dodge and out of her room and down the stairs. She is close behind and I try to stay out of her grasps. However, I don't know the layout of her home so I hit the couch and go tumbling down. Since Quinn was right on my heels she doesn't have time to stop herself before falling over me. We both lay there laughing again.
"Please, don't break anything," Quinn's mom yells.
Quinn gets up first and extends her hand for me. I take it and she pulls me up with so much strength that I bump into her. She has to wrap her arms around me and take a step back so that we don't go down again.
My face starts to heat up and I automatically get goosebumps at the slightly skin contact. Quinn looks down at me to ask, "Are you okay?"
I'm too stunned by the close proximity to her face. She's a bit taller than me though, just by two or three inches do I have to lift me head up slightly.
"Riley?"
"Oh, yeah. I'm good. Good as can be," I blurt out and lean back from her. She let's me go and tilts her head in confusion, but doesn't say anything.
I try to change the topic and comment, "I sure did work up an appetite from all that."
"Me too, we should probably eat. So, I have a few options for you to pick from," she replies making me groan.
Quinn chuckles and proceeds to say, "We could order pizza or make some pasta, since that's the only thing you can make."
"Oh my god, shut up jerk," I reply. "I will probably light a fire in your kitchen somehow, so let's go with the safe option and get pizza."
"Sounds good, pyromaniac," she teases and I roll me eyes at her.
Quinn and I head back to her room so she can grab her phone and order the pizza. There is about a twenty five minute wait so Quinn and I think of things to do while we wait.
"We could study?" I suggest and Quinn looks at me distastefully.
"How about no. This sleepover is to have fun and take a break from school," she replies.
"Well then what should we do? What do people do at sleepovers?" I ask.
"Normally, drink a little, play around with makeup, hair and nails, or play party games like truth or dare."
"Well that's a hard no for the first couple of things, but I guess we can try truth or dare while we wait," I reply.
"Okay, sure. Truth or dare?" She asks.
"Truth," I reply.
"Of course you would," she teases. "Hmm, if you could could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?"
"You're going to easy. And the answer would be my mom's enchiladas of course," I reply.
"Okay okay, I'll ask or dare harder things. Anyway, I pick truth as well," she replies.
I think for a few seconds and ask, "Why did you join the cheer team this year?"
"I don't know. It just felt like the cool thing to do in the moment, but I'm glad I tried out. I wouldn't have become friends with you if I didn't," she responds.
"That's not true," I reply.
"Yes it is, Riley. It's okay, I understand. You were just to preoccupied with other things to notice me."
"I'm sorry, I should have tried talking to you in the previous years. I just didn't think anyone ever noticed me around, so I did have high hope when it came to being friends with you," I say.
"Riley, I did notice you. I always did."
"Wait what!? No way. You couldn't have. I was always so shy in the back, you probably mistook me for knowing someone else," I suggest.
"Not true, Riley. I noticed you from the very beginning, because despite how shy you were, I knew how smart and full of spirit you were. I always thought you were so cool."
I have to look down because my cheeks start heating up again and im probably so blushed now. I just can't believe that someone like her even gave me a second glance.
"I didn't think anyone noticed me," I repeat.
"Well you're wrong," she simply replies. I look up at her and our eyes connect in this intense stare. I'm getting lost in her eyes again and my heart us beating so fast.
"Girls, the pizza is here," yells Quinn's mom. I didn't notice how much time has passed, I guess we were stuck like this for a while.
I get up and extend my hand to Quinn this time to help her up. She takes my hand to get up and gives me an adorable smile that makes me really happy.
Then we both go down to eat pizza and think about the next thing to do tonight.
