Chapter 109
The Luna and her Quadruplet Pups
Jane âItâs a long story.â Eric broaches, sitting across from us in his living room. âAre you sure you want to do this now? Surely there are more important things to worry about. The pups-â
âWeâre asking because of the pups.â Ethan interrupts. âBecause we think thereâs a chance they were taken by traffickers, and thereâs very few people who would have the motive, or the nerve to buy them.â
Eric blinked, âBut Eve⦠I thought it was Eve.â
âShe did take them at first.â l explain hoarsely. âBut she doesnât have them anymore. The police caught her, and they arenât with him.â
âGoddess, Iâm so sorryâ Eric gasped. âThatâs terrible news.â
âDo you think your father would take them, if he had the chance?â l ask him.
âYes.â Eric sighs, letting his eyes fall shut for a long moment. âHe would â in a heartbeat. Do you know for certain that theyâve been taken by traffickers?â
âNo.â Ethan replies. âBut itâs the likeliest explanation at this point. They were in a bad part of town late at night, and thereâs been an alert out for them so anyone who might have grabbed them would know theyâre ours.â
Eric nods in understanding. âIn that case I can reach out to some allies in my fatherâs court. I donât have many friends left there, but there are still a few people l know I can count on.â
âEric, why did you leave in the first place?â Ethan inquires.
âI came because my father sent meâ He admits. â| wanted to prove myself to him, Iâve always just been the spare son, I wanted to show him I could be more than that â that lâm every bit as good as my older brother:â
âSent you why?â Ethan pushes, absentmindedly rubbing my arm.
Eric is watching me now with such a guilty expression that lâm afraid to hear his answer.Iâm so sorry, Jane.â He begins, making my heart sink. âHe sent me to befriend you, to learn anything I could from you about Ethan, and potentially.. to take you and the pups hostage.â
Ethan growls deep in his chest, but he doesnât move. Both men are wish theyâd stop. Itâs hard enough to process all this without their constant scrutiny. ââ¦I donât understand.
âI confess. âNo one knew about me, everyone thought I was deadâ watching me for my reaction, and Eric shakes his head. âMy father is a very untrusting man. He has dozens of spies in every territory, every pack in the realm. Theyâd already been watching you when you faked your death. They followed you to the Dark Moon territory, they watched you throughout your pregnancy. My father thought Ethan must be hiding something terrible if you were so desperate to get away from him that youâd go to such lengths, so he sent me to find out what they were.â
âSo you knew who l was, before you ever approached me?â l ask, my voice sounding very small indeed.
âYes,â He admits, wincing. âMy job was to get close to you, to find out what skeletons were hiding in Ethanâs closet, but you have to believe, I never wanted to hurt you, Jane.â
âWell you did!â l exclaim, surging to my feet. â1 canât believe what a fool lâve been. I trusted you over everyone, Eric!â
âThatâs because his spies told him exactly how to get close to you.â Ethan rumbles ominously, scowling at the man l once considered my best friend, second only to Linda. âHe practically had a Jane handbook. He knew your every vulnerability, and exactly what buttons to push.â
âYou knew about this.â I accuse Ethan, turning to look at him with mild hurt. âYou knew he was never really my friend.â
âl suspected.â Ethan corrects me gently. âAfter we found out who Eric really was. Aimon isnât the only one with spies, but unlike him, I never had my spies watching you, so they didnât know you were still out there. They did know that Aimon was watching us like a hawk though. That heâd go to any length to bring me down. Without me, there wouldnât be anything to stop him from expanding his empire over the continent.
âJane, you have no idea how sorry l amââ Eric tells me, âAfter l got to the Dark Moon pack and got to know you, I told my father I couldnât help him anymore, that I wasnât going to spy on you. However it started, I fell in love with you for real â and he exiled me as punishment. I havenât spoken to him in three years.
âThree years.â I repeat. âWhich means you were still reporting back to him for a full year before you got enough backbone to stand up to him!â
Ethan pulls me back down onto the couch before | can lunge towards Eric, but itâs a close call. Iâm still growling under my breath when he tucks me under his arm. âEasy, little wolfâ
âYouâre right.â Eric laments, a pained expression on his handsome face. â1 was weak, I was a coward.
ltâs the worst mistake lâve made in my entire life, and I will always regret it.â
âYou shouldâ I snap. âYou could have at least warned us. You could have at least told me that I had people watching me, spying on my pups!â
âI was afraid that ifl told you, youâd never forgive me.â He shares.
âYou were right to fear that.â I hiss, âBecause l wonât. Especially not now.â
Ethan cuddles me closer. âIf youâre really sorry, you can start by helping us track the pups down. If weâre right and theyâre being taken to your father, weâre going to need someone with insider knowledge to help us get them back.â
âI canât go back.â Eric pales. âI told you, Iâve been exiled. If I set foot in the Southern Isles, Iâll be killed on sight.â
âSounds fair to meâ l snipe.
Ethan shoots me a look, â0r, you can go to your father and tell him youâve made a grave mistake. Tell him youâll do whatever he asks in order to regain his good favor:â
âHeâll know itâs a lie, heâll know lâm trying to help you get the pups backâ He objects.
âNot if you reach out to him before they arrive, before he knows theyâre up for grabs.â Ethan suggests.
âWhat if weâre wrong?â Eric asks, âWhat if the pups arenât headed there at all?â
âThen you can still pay your penance by becoming a double agentâ Ethan informs him coolly. âAimonâs bound to tell his son things he wouldnât let slip to his spies.â
âHeâll never trust me after l betrayed him.â Eric insists.
âToo bad!â T bite, âYou donât have a choice. My pups are missing. Goddess only knows what theyâ re suffering right now and if you think Iâm going to have any sympathy for your traitorous behind when their lives are on the line, you are sorely mistaken.â
âIf he does get hold of them, what will he do?â
Ethan questions, âyou said part of your original mission was potentially holding Jane and the pups hostage, to what end?â
âl canât be sure.â Eric hedges, âmy father is insanely paranoid. He didnât tell me then what his end game was, but if I had to guess he would use them to try and lure you out into the open so he could attempt an assassination. Or he could attempt to engage you in a war, assuming he has reason to believe he could defeat you in combat.â
A steady stream of swears pour from my l!ps as I mutinously grumble under my breath, glaring daggers at Eric as I imagine all the different ways Iâd like to punish him. The mere suggestion of Ethanâs death has my wolf raring for a fight. I didnât realize how protective I felt of him until this very moment.
The man in question is smothering a smile and petting me in a manner lâm sure is intended to be soothing, but itâs not working. Feeling my mateâs hands on my body does nothing but heat my blood.
Usually it would spark my lust, but right now â when lâm already feeling completely bloodthirsty â it just eggs me on.
Before too long heâs holding me back again, and Eric is looking even more miserable than before.
âIâll do whatever I can to help.â He offers.
âOf course you will.â I scoff, ânot helping was never an option you little weaselâ
âJaneyâ Ethan scolds, not sounding the least bit disappÅoving, âplay nice. Weâre going to have to learn to get along if we want to get the pups back.'â
âGet along with him?â l gape, âa month ago you were fighting him to the death! And that was before we knew what a traitor he is!â Iâm a mom.I canât control my anger to Eric when I see the fact that my pups being kidnapped is related to him.
âItâs for the pups, baby.â Ethan reminds me, âfor then we can put up with everything â even the weasel.â
âYouâre right.â I begrudgingly agree, shooting another hateful glower at Eric. âFor the pups.â
