Nanny for the Neighbors: Chapter 27
Nanny for the Neighbors: A Surprise Baby Reverse Harem Romance
âAre you fucking kidding me?â Benny shouts half an hour later, his slice of pepperoni pizza forgotten halfway to his mouth. I wince, winding another strand of hair around my curling iron. Weâre both in my bedroom. Iâm sitting cross-legged on the floor, getting ready to go out, and heâs sprawled across my bed.
He leans so far forward he almost falls off the mattress. âYou shagged both of them?!â He squawks.
I glance up at the ceiling. âCan you keep your voice down?â I hiss. âApparently, they can hear into my flat.â
He raises his voice. âYOU SHAGGED TWO OF YOUR NEIGHBORS, AND IT WAS THE BEST SEX YOUâVE EVER HAD? YOUâRE DYING TO DO IT AGAIN? YOUâRE RUINED FOR SINGLE-HOLE SEX FOR LIFE? YOUâow!â He breaks off when I throw a dough ball at his face. âBabe, I canât believe this! You never take my advice! Iâm so proud of you!â
I let the curl fall, bouncing around my face. âHow was this your advice? You only told me to shag Jack.â
âI told you to have sex. Ergo, I can take credit for any sexual activities. Wow. I am such a good friend.â He finally remembers his pizza, shoving it into his mouth. âWhat about the last one?â He mumbles around the mouthful of dough. âYou gonna get the full set?â
I set the curling wand down, flicking it off. âThe last one?â
âThe other guy in the flat? Heâs really hot. Kinda looks like Henry Cavill.â
âSebastian? How do you know what he looks like?â
âHe buzzed me in once. Are you gonna fuck him, too? Maybe he wants to join.â He wiggles his eyebrows at me.
I hesitate, looking at myself in the mirror. My shoulders droop.
He frowns. âHey. Whatâs wrong?â
âNothing. We got in kind of a fight the other day.â If by fight, you mean I sat there like a loser while he yelled at me like an unruly child.
âOh no!â He shuffles closer. âWhat happened?â
âI was playing blocks with his baby. He came running out of his room, tripped on one of them, and then just went off at me.â I lower my voice. âWould it kill you to not trash our flat? This is a bloody mess.â I reach for my makeup bag, pawing through it. âI get that heâs stressed, and whatever. But I really donât think he has a right to yell at me like Iâm a bloody idiot, when Iâm looking after his kid for him.â
âNot at all,â he agrees. âHeâs your employer. He shouldnât be treating his workers like that.â
âItâs not really what he said that upset me, though.â I pick up a lipstick tube and stare at the label on the bottom. Badass Bitch. Yeah, right. âI didnât stand up for myself. I didnât say anything back. I just apologised, then I cleaned his entire house. I did a bunch of chores for him, Benny. It was like being ten years old again, trying to impress some knobhead foster parent.â I sigh, putting the lipstick down. âI just hate when I do this. I donât understand why Iâm so completely incapable of standing up for myself. Iâm so weak.â
âYouâre not weak,â he scoffs. âThe care system can screw you up in a lot of ways, but one thing it wonât make you is weak.â He takes a swig of rosé, then looks at me from over his wine glass. âYouâre solid diamond, babe.â
âSince when? Literally name one time when someone was rude to me, and I didnât shrivel into a fucking raisin.â I hate this part of myself. Iâm not a scared, shy kid anymore, Iâm a grown woman. But Iâm still so desperate for people to like me. At any sign of conflict, I just become completely subservient. Itâs gross.
Thereâs a sudden, authoritative rap on my front door. I frown, looking at Benny. âYou didnât order more pizza, did you?â
He shakes his head. Shrugging, I stumble over to the front door and yank it open. Sebastian is standing in the hallway, dressed in a navy suit and holding a sleeping Cami in her carrier.
âOh. Itâs you.â I lean on the doorframe, my head spinning slightly from the wine. âWhatâs this?â
âIâve got an emergency meeting.â He puts the carrier in my arms. âI need to go into the office.â
I stare down at Cami. Sheâs dressed in a little pink babygrow with a sheep on it. As I watch, she stirs sleepily, opening and closing her mouth like a little guppy fish.
My first instinct is to say yeah, of course, no problem, see you later. But Benny makes an enraged noise from behind me, and I remember myself. I shake my head. âIâm not looking after her tonight.â
Sebastian looks taken aback. âWhat?â
âIâm busy.â
He stares at me. âThis is an emergency. You canât cancel? Iâll pay you, obviously.â
Irritation sparks in me. âIt didnât even occur to you to ask me first, did it?â
âWell, Iââ He looks over my shoulder at Benny. His face goes cold. âWhat are you doing thatâs so important?â
âIâm going out.â
âBeth. Weâre having a real problem with an investor. If I donât fix this, he might pull out of the project completely.â
I shrug. âGreat. That doesnât have anything to do with me though, does it?â I hand the carrier back to him. âI have a life, too. And Iâm not looking after a baby when Iâm drunk.â
âYouâre drunk?â He says, horrified.
That just pisses me off even more. âWhy are you making me feel guilty over this? Iâm off the clock! I donât just sit around in my flat, on-call and waiting for you to snap your fingers at me!â
âButââ
âIâm your employee from eight-to-seven, five days a week,â I say firmly. âAfter that, you donât get to tell me what to do. If you need me to work extra hours, you need to tell me in advance, and ask for my help. You canât just knock on my door and demand I work overtime without any warning. Iâm not your wife. This kid is not my child. Just because I live conveniently in your building, doesnât mean Iâm your full-time servant. Take some responsibility for your own daughter, for Godâs sake.â
He stares at me, open-mouthed. I bend to press a kiss to Camiâs cheek, then straighten, glare at him, and close the door in his face.
âWhat a prick,â Benny says from behind me. âI no longer think heâs hot.â
âHeâs an arrogant bastard.â
âSo arrogant,â Benny agrees. âBet he wanks in front of the mirror. Bet he winks at his reflection after he comes.â
âI appreciate that youâre trying to support me emotionally, but I really donât need to think of my boss jerking off.â
He rolls over onto his stomach and studies me. âYou like him,â he says softly, curls falling over his face.
The realisation crashes over me like a wave. Heâs right. Sebastian is hard, and cold, and rude. And I still somehow fancy him.
âWell. I do have a habit of liking people who treat me like shit. Iâm probably one rude email from falling in love with him.â I lean against the door, a weird mixture of guilt and self-hatred twisting in my gut. âIâm pathetic.â
Benny makes a sad noise in the back of his throat. âCome here.â I cross over to the bed, and he pulls me into his muscled arms, hugging me tightly. âYouâre not pathetic. I love you.â
âI really like you, too,â I whisper, and he snorts, pushing me towards my wardrobe.
âAlright. Have another drink, put on a pretty dress, and then letâs go out. Trust me: in one hour, youâll have forgotten all about that prick.â
