Nanny for the Neighbors: Chapter 15
Nanny for the Neighbors: A Surprise Baby Reverse Harem Romance
I look up to see Benny striding into the cafe. Heâs dressed in his bright red delivery man uniform, and carrying a massive box in his arms. I watch as he passes it over the counter to one of the employees. She blushes and bats her eyes at him, leaning closer to mutter a few words in his ear, but he ignores her, focussing his gaze on me.
I smile, waving him over to our table. âI didnât know you delivered here.â
âI deliver everywhere, babe. Iâm well known for my packages.â He wiggles his eyebrows at me.
âEw, wow, super gross.â I stand up and let him sweep me into a bear hug.
âYouâve been ignoring my calls,â he accuses, pulling back and pushing some hair behind my ears. âWhere have you been?â
âSorry. Itâs been crazy. Iâve got a new job. With, uh, Jack, actually.â I wave at Jack, whoâs sitting frozen in his seat. âYou might remember him. He lives in my building.â
Bennyâs eyes widen. He stares between the two of us. âI see. Hey, do I owe you a pizza?â
âIâm pretty sure you do.â
He grins. âGood girl.â He reaches over and offers Jack his hand. âBenny. Nice to meet you. Cute kid.â
âYeah,â Jack says, his voice cool as he shakes Bennyâs hand. âShe is.â
Benny turns back to me, tucking my bra strap under my shirt. âHey, I was thinking, you wanna go out with me this weekend? I just met someone who works at a club in Soho. Donât really wanna go alone.â
I translate that to please wingwoman for me so I have an excuse to stalk/fuck this girl/guy.
I shrug. âI could do with a night out.â
âSweet.â His phone beeps, and he checks it, grimacing. âIâm running behind. But call me, okay? Love you.â
âAww, thanks.â
He narrows his eyes. âI love you,â he repeats pointedly.
âYouâre my number one guy.â
âI love you so much,â he insists.
âCouldnât survive without you.â
He groans. âOne of these days, Iâll make you say it.â
I smile. Itâs a running joke between us that I never say that I love him. Itâs not personal; I never say I love you to anyone. I havenât since I made the decision to stop dating a few years ago.
I know itâs stupid. But I have a ninety-nine-percent track record of people I love leaving me. Parents. Grandparents. Foster parents. Boyfriends. Friends. Benny is the only person I have left. I donât want to jinx it.
He nods to Jack. âNice to meet you, man. See you around.â
âBye, man,â Jack says, his voice bright and fake-sounding. I wave as Benny leaves, then turn back to the dregs of my hot chocolate, smiling slightly.
âIâve seen him with you in the lobby,â Jack says casually.
I nod, trying to spoon up a mini marshmallow. âHe stays over sometimes.â
âOh.â Thereâs a brief pause. âSo, are you twoâ¦â
It takes me a second to work out what heâs asking. I burst out laughing. âOh my God, no. Heâs my brother.â
He blinks. âBrother?â I can see the disbelief on his face. âYou look nothing alike. Was he adopted?â
My smile drops slightly. âYeah, actually. He was. But, no, heâs my foster brother.â
âYouâre adopted?â
âNope,â I say lightly. âJust him.â
Jack doesnât say anything, staring at me. The silence stretches out awkwardly as he puts together the pieces. He obviously doesnât know what to say.
My cheeks burn. This, right here, is why I donât like telling people about my childhood. It always makes things weird.
I clear my throat, standing. âUm, can you watch Cami for a sec? I need to go to the looââ
Jackâs hand shoots out and wraps around my wrist, keeping me in place. âI have a crush on you,â he blurts out.
