Chapter 54 – Girls’ Night
Astralyth Online
As dinner wound down, the clinking of cutlery and soft conversation gave way to the rustling of dishes being cleared. Madelyn and Sarah, now full, gathered the plates and cups, carrying them to the sink. Emily smiled at their teamwork, noting how Sarahâs bubbly energy seemed to lift her daughterâs spirits even after such a heavy day.
âThanks for helping, girls,â Emily said as she rinsed a plate and handed it to Jack to dry. âItâs nice to see the two of you working together.â
âOf course, Mrs. Roth!â Sarah chirped, stacking plates with a flair that made Madelyn roll her eyes. âGotta earn my keep, right?â
âYouâre such a show-off,â Madelyn said, but her tone was light, her tail swaying slightly despite her failed efforts to hide her amusement.
Once the table was cleared and the kitchen tidied, Sarahâs energy seemed to reach new levels. âOkay, so⦠what are we doing now?â she asked, bouncing slightly on her toes. âWe could play some games! Board games, card games, video gamesâwhatâve you got?â
Jack chuckled, setting the last dish on the rack. âYou still have plenty of energy left, donât you, Sarah?â
âAlways!â she replied with a wide grin.
Emily dried her hands and gave Sarah a knowing look. âYou two go ahead and have fun. Jack and I are going to relax for a bit. Weâll leave the chaos to you.â She winked at Madelyn, her expression warm and amused.
Madelynâs cheeks heated at the subtle implication, but Sarah didnât miss a beat. âChaos is my middle name!â she declared dramatically, striking a pose. âCome on, Mads, letâs see what games we can play!â
Madelyn shook her head, a reluctant smile tugging at her lips. âAlright, alright. Let me see what we have in the living room.â
As they moved to the living room, Sarah nudged Madelyn playfully. âYour mom totally thinks weâre adorable,â she teased.
Madelyn groaned, her face heating further. âSarahâ¦â
âWhat? Sheâs not wrong.â Sarah grinned, winking at her.
Madelyn decided not to dignify that with a response, instead leading Sarah to the cabinet where they kept their board games and video games. âYou can choose something,â she said, pulling open the doors to reveal a collection of colorful boxes and neatly coiled wires.
âLet me think for a bit, though!â Sarah exclaimed, scanning the selection. âOkay, letâs play something easy and fun. Uno? Or do we go all-out chaos mode with Mario Kart?â
Madelyn raised an eyebrow. âYou just want to destroy me again, donât you?â
âObviously,â Sarah said, grabbing the Mario Kart case and handing it to Madelyn with a grin. âLetâs go, Mads. Show me what youâve got.â
As they set up the game, laughter and friendly banter filled the room.
The game loaded up, the familiar energetic music of Mario Kart filling the room. Sarah immediately navigated to her favorite character, Daisy, her movements confident and quick. âGotta stick with my girl,â she said with a grin. âSheâs the princess of the track.â
Madelyn smiled, scrolling through the character selection screen. Her finger hovered over a few options before settling on Cat Peach. She felt a small surge of pride at her choice. âI mean, itâs kind of fitting,â she said, glancing at Sarah, her tail swishing playfully behind her.
Sarah burst out laughing. âOh my gosh, itâs perfect! You are totally Cat Peach.â
Madelyn blushed slightly but couldnât help the grin spreading on her face. âLetâs just see if I can live up to the name.â
âAlright, CPU on hard mode,â Sarah said, her tone daring. âBecause anything less is boring.â
Madelyn raised an eyebrow but nodded. âSure. Iâll just⦠try not to embarrass myself.â
The first race began, the countdown ticking down. Sarah was laser-focused, her fingers moving with practiced ease as Daisy shot out of the starting line with a perfectly timed boost. Madelyn, not quite as precise, started in the middle of the pack, scrambling to dodge shells and bananas as the chaos unfolded.
âCome on, Mads!â Sarah called, her competitive streak on full display as she zoomed around a sharp turn. âYou canât let the CPUs beat you!â
Madelyn laughed, her eyes narrowing in determination as she narrowly avoided a green shell, completely by accident. âIâm trying, okay? Theyâre ruthless!â
By the end of the first race, Sarah crossed the finish line in first place, raising her arms triumphantly. âBoom! Daisy reigns supreme!â she declared, practically bouncing in her seat.
Madelyn, who had managed a respectable fifth place, shook her head, smiling. âYouâre way too into this.â
âAnd youâre not into it enough,â Sarah teased, nudging her with her elbow. âNext raceâstep it up, kitty-cat!â
The next few races played out in a similar pattern. Sarah consistently finished first, her competitive energy filling the room as she cheered or groaned at near-misses. Madelynâs performance was⦠mixed. Sometimes she managed to secure second or third place, other times she fell victim to an unfortunate string of items that hit her, leaving her in the lower half of the rankings.
But despite the varying results, Madelyn found herself laughing more than she had in weeks. Sarahâs enthusiasm was contagious, and the playful banter between them made every race feel like a win, no matter the outcome.
By the time the final race ended, Sarah was sitting cross-legged on the couch, a victorious grin plastered across her face. âAnd that, my dear Maddy, is how you dominate the Mushroom Kingdom.â
Madelyn chuckled, setting down her controller. âSure, sure. But you know what? I still had fun.â
âThatâs the spirit,â Sarah said, nudging her again. âAnd hey, fifth place is respectable.â
âI got second in that one race,â Madelyn pointed out with a mock-defensive tone.
âAnd Iâm super proud of you for that,â Sarah said, smirking. âYouâre learning.â
Madelyn couldnât help but smile, the warmth of their easy camaraderie making her heart feel lighter.
Madelyn stretched her arms over her head, a content smile on her face. âThat was fun,â she said, glancing at Sarah, who was still buzzing with energy.
âIt was more than fun,â Sarah replied, grinning. âIt was legendary. Admit it, Maddyâyou had a blast.â
Madelyn laughed softly. âOkay, fine. I did.â She stood, brushing crumbs off her dress. âI think Iâm going to take a quick shower before bed. You can use it after me if you want.â
âSounds like a plan,â Sarah said, flopping back on the couch. âTake your time. Iâll just be here, basking in my victory.â
Madelyn rolled her eyes playfully as she grabbed her things and made her way to the bathroom. Once inside, she turned on the water, letting it heat up as she slipped out of her clothes. The sound of the running water filled the room, a calming backdrop to her swirling thoughts.
As the warm water cascaded over her, Madelyn leaned against the tiled wall, her mind drifting to Sarah. She thought about the way Sarah had reacted from the moment she first saw her as Madelynâthe unflinching acceptance, the excitement, the unwavering support. It was something she hadnât realized how much she needed until it was there.
Madelyn closed her eyes, letting the water stream over her face. Every moment with Sarah felt so⦠safe. Comfortable. She thought about how much she enjoyed Sarahâs company, the way her friendâs laughter could light up a room and dissolve even her worst anxieties. It wasnât just their shared history or the fact that Sarah had been her rock through all of thisâit was something more.
She caught herself smiling as she recalled Sarah brushing her hair earlier. The feeling of Sarahâs hands on her, the soft teasing remarks, the way she made Madelyn feel warm insideâit all lingered in her mind. The realization hit her like a splash of cold water: She makes me happy. Really, genuinely happy.
Madelyn let out a soft, nervous laugh, shaking her head. âGet it together,â she muttered to herself. âSheâs just Sarah⦠right?â
But the thought didnât feel convincing. There was something different now, something she couldnât quite put into words but couldnât ignore either.
She sighed deeply, rinsing the last of the shampoo from her hair. âMaybe Iâm just overthinking it,â she murmured. But even as she said it, she wasnât sure if she believed herself.
Turning off the water, Madelyn stepped out of the shower and wrapped herself in a towel. As she dried off, her thoughts still lingered on Sarahâher smile, her laugh, the way she always seemed to know exactly what to say to make everything better.
By the time she was dressed in her nightgown and heading back to the living room, her cheeks were still warm. She found Sarah sprawled out on the couch, scrolling through her phone.
âAll yours,â Madelyn said, her voice a little softer than usual.
Sarah glanced up and grinned. âThanks, Maddy. Iâll be quick.â
As Sarah disappeared into the bathroom, Madelyn sat on the couch, her hands clasped in her lap. She stared at the empty space beside her, her thoughts racing. For better or worse, she couldnât shake the feeling that her friendship with Sarah was beginning to changeâand she wasnât sure what to do about it.
Not five minutes had passed when Madelyn heard Sarah shout from the bathroom, her voice carrying a slightly sheepish tone. âMaddy!â
Madelynâs ears perked up as she sat on the couch, Lyra perched comfortably on her shoulder. âWhat is it?â she called back, setting aside the book she had been pretending to read.
âUhm,â Sarah replied, her voice muffled by the bathroom door. âI forgot I donât have clothes here⦠or anything to wear for the night.â
Madelyn facepalmed, a sigh escaping her lips. âOf course,â she muttered under her breath. Lyra, who had been unusually quiet, suddenly burst into laughter, her tiny voice like the tinkling of bells.
âYou two really are hopeless sometimes,â Lyra teased, fluttering up and twirling in the air. âItâs adorable.â
Madelyn rolled her eyes, though her face warmed at the thought of Sarah waiting in the bathroom, likely wrapped in a towel and trying to figure out what to do next. âAlright, hold on!â she called, getting up and heading toward her room.
She rifled through her drawers, searching for something Sarah could wear. After a moment, she pulled out an oversized shirt and a pair of soft pajama shortsâcomfortable and simple. âThis should do,â she murmured to herself before heading back toward the bathroom.
Standing just outside the door, she knocked lightly. âIâve got something for you to wear,â she said, holding the clothes out.
The door opened a crack, just enough for Sarah to peek her head out, her golden hair slightly damp and sticking to her face. âThanks, Maddy,â she said, her tone genuinely grateful. She reached out, taking the clothes from Madelynâs hands. Their fingers brushed briefly, sending a small jolt through Madelynâs chest.
Sarahâs bright smile widened. âYouâre a lifesaver.â
Madelyn quickly looked away, hoping Sarah wouldnât notice the heat rising to her cheeks. âItâs no big deal,â she said, her voice a bit higher than usual. âJust hurry up before you catch a cold or something.â
Sarah laughed softly before closing the door again. Madelyn leaned against the wall for a moment, letting out a long breath. Lyra flitted over, a knowing grin on her tiny face.
âYouâre blushing again,â Lyra pointed out, her tone sing-song.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âI am not,â Madelyn whispered back, though her reddening cheeks said otherwise.
Lyra giggled, settling back on Madelynâs shoulder. âYouâre too easy to read, Maddy. But donât worryâitâs cute.â
Before Madelyn could respond, the bathroom door opened, and Sarah stepped out, now wearing the borrowed clothes. The oversized shirt hung loosely on her, and the pajama shorts looked a bit big, but she somehow managed to pull off the look effortlessly.
âComfy,â Sarah declared, spinning around once. âThanks, Maddy.â
Madelyn smiled shyly, her tail swaying slightly behind her. âIt suits you.â
Sarah grinned, grabbing Madelynâs arm and pulling her back toward the living room. âCome on, letâs get back to hanging out before your parents think weâve fallen asleep in the bathroom or something.â
Madelyn followed, her heart still fluttering as she tried to focus on anything other than how much she enjoyed having Sarah here.
As they entered the living room, Madelynâs parents were seated on the couch, sipping tea and chatting quietly. The warm light of the room cast a cozy glow, but the moment Jack spotted Sarah wearing Madelynâs oversized shirt and pajama shorts, he raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement playing at the corners of his mouth.
âOh, by the way, Sarah,â he said, his tone light. âDid you message your parents to let them know youâre staying over?â
The playful atmosphere shifted instantly. Sarahâs face fell, her usual vibrant energy dimming as she muttered, âI did send them a message, not that it matters, they donât care anyway.â
Madelynâs heart sank at the response. She glanced at her parents, who exchanged a knowing look. It wasnât a new revelation; they all knew about Sarahâs strained relationship with her family. But it never got easier to hear. Emily, ever the nurturing presence, gave Sarah a soft, understanding smile.
âWell,â Emily said gently, setting her teacup down, âyouâre always welcome here, Sarah. You know that.â
Sarahâs lips quirked up in a faint smile, though the sadness in her eyes lingered. âThanks, Mrs. Roth. I appreciate it.â
Jack nodded, his expression softening. âYouâre part of the family when youâre here, Sarah. Donât forget that.â
The words seemed to ease some of Sarahâs tension. She straightened slightly, her usual bravado creeping back as she gestured at her borrowed outfit. âBesides, how could anyone resist my stunning fashion sense in Maddyâs clothes?â
Madelyn let out a small laugh, grateful for Sarahâs attempt to lighten the mood. âYeah, stunning is one word for it,â bumping her friendâs shoulder lightly.
Sarah grinned, the sadness retreating behind her usual mischievous demeanor. âExactly.â
Emily stood, collecting the empty teacups. âWhy donât you girls get comfy in the living room? Maybe pick a movie or something? Weâll head upstairs soon and let you have the space. Just donât make it too late, okay?â
âOkay, sounds good,â Madelyn said, already feeling the mood lighten.
As her parents retreated to the kitchen to tidy up, Madelyn and Sarah flopped onto the couch. Lyra, who had been perched on the mantel, flew over and settled on the armrest.
âMovie night sounds fun,â Lyra chimed in. âDo I get a say in the choice?â
Sarah laughed, her spirits noticeably lifted. âSure, Lyra. As long as itâs not some boring documentary.â
Madelyn leaned back, her tail curling comfortably beside her. âWhat are we thinking? Action? Comedy? Something completely ridiculous?â
