You,
You don't know how lucky you are

But soon enough I'm taking my shot
_______
Maddox stepped out of Alpha Dario's office, a quiet sigh escaping his mouth as he made his way down the hallway of the large pack house. He walked down the stone porch steps and stepped into the backyard that led into the surrounding forest.
Only three more days. Maddox thought to himself.
He had been on Alpha Dario's territory for four days and quite frankly he wanted to get back to California, to his pack. Preparing a pack for a possible rogue attack should have been so much easier and less time efficient, but when Maddox got to hear about the previous attacks as well as studying the warriors fighting skills, what should have been flew out the window.
Maddox had arranged for himself to stay three more days to help during training, and secretly to avoid Ava just a little longer. Whether on purpose or not, Remy had mentioned to Maddox that Ava had confessed to Sebastian about their kiss. Remy had also mentioned that Ava and Sebastian had patched things up pretty well and that he didn't want Maddox playing with his daughter's heart, for Maddox to keep his lips to himself ... unless he knew something they didn't.
Ava's my mate. Maddox had wanted to say, but what would that have mattered if Ava truly did want Sebastian.
Ava wasn't a child, if she really doubted her feeling for Sebastian she would have broke up with him. If anything, Ava was honest, so if she confessed to Sebastian and tried to repair the relationship then maybe Ava really did love him. And that was the thought that crushed Maddox.
He couldn't risk everything to pursue a real relationship with Ava if she was already emotionally invested in another guy.
Yeah, mates tended to end up together in the end, but it didn't mean they naturally would. Just take a look at Ava's uncle Levi and his wife Maclynn.

"Who's there?" A soft voice called, fear detectable in the feminine voice.
Maddox raised his eyebrows in question as he sat on the stone bench next to the young woman. He didn't say anything, ignoring the woman as he stared straight ahead.
The woman sniffed the air and looked at Maddox, but the fear was till clear on her pretty face.
"Johnny?" She called sniffing the air again, as she gripped the book in her hands.
Maddox was confused, but then he noticed the gray patch on the woman's brown eyes.
She was blind.
"Not Johnny, Maddox. Do you want me to go get someone?" Maddox asked, watching as her shoulders slowly relaxed.
"You're the next alpha to your pack, right?" She ignored his question asking her own.
Maddox nodded in response, before quickly verbalizing his answer. "Yeah."
"I'm Sara, the alpha's daughter." She set her book aside, and stuck out her hand in Maddox's direction.
Maddox grasped her hand and gave it a quick shake. "Max."
As they enjoyed the calming silence that followed after their introduction, Maddox glanced over at her. Spotting the small mating mark on the crook of her neck, Maddox asked. "Who's your mate?"
Next to him, Sara tensed before covering the mark with hand as if suddenly remembering something. "Adrian Parker, she passed two years ago."
Maddox was silent. He didn't know what to say and sorry didn't seem like the answer.
"Are you marked?" Sara asked, pushing her wavy blond hair behind her ear.
"No, she's happily dating a human." Max replied, stuffing his hands in the front pockets of his dark jeans.
Sara nodded, but didn't question him further. Seconds later she turned her head in his direction and smiled. "We live in a fucked up world."
Maddox was surprised by her choice of words and the dark meaning behind them, yet he still smiled. "Nice to meet you Sara."
Sara laughed, absentmindedly twirling her cane in her hands. "Do you want to have some fun?"
Maddox laughed this time. The girl was full of weird surprises.
"Are you coming, or not?" Sara smiled, blonde hair blowing in the wind.
Maddox looked at her, and despite the two long scars that ran from her hairline to her left eyebrow, he found her stunningly beautiful.
"Max, are you still there?" She touched his leg, pale brown eyes searching his hazel ones.
"Yeah, let's go." Max mustered a small smile, and followed her into the woods.

"Do I look like a slut in this dress?" Sara asked, blindly patting down the black material that reached just above her knees.
"No, you look beautiful." Maddox replied with his back turned to the girl, as he fixed his tie.
"Maybe I should cut the dress or wear more make up." Sara scrunched the material of the dress up so it reached about mid thigh. "You know slut's have more fun at parties."
A week had passed since Maddox and Sara met and the two were like peas in a awkward pod. Over the days they had gotten close, so close that Maddox had asked her to be his date to Roman's arrival party. Romantically they were nowhere on the same planet, but that was something both of them wanted.
Sara was the awkward girl, with the happiest of smiles and the darkest quotes about life. Even with her loss of vision, her and Maddox had managed to have a lot of fun in the past week. Now they were in back at the Monroe's house in a guest bedroom getting ready for Roman's arrival.
Tonight would also be the first night Maddox would see Ava again, but he tried not to think about it, think about her.
"Sara." Maddox chuckled, while tying his shoes.
Sara huffed, but pulled down her dress again, flattening it out with her hands. "Dress like a nun, he said. It'll be fun, he said."
Maddox just shook his head, before glancing her over once more. "Are you ready?
"Don't sound so depressed. Your precious Ava is downstairs and hopefully tonight she'll get on her knees and beg you to mark her. Oh , the times where I wish I could still see ..." Sara began to ramble, as Maddox gently guided her out of the room and out to the nicely decorated backyard.
It was passed sunset so it was pretty dark outside, besides the small lights they had set up. A nice table was set in the middle of the backyard , and heads turned as soon as Maddox and Sara walked out.
Maddox avoided their gazes as he helped Sara into the seat next to his. Seated at the table were Ava's grandparents from both sides, Remy and Gen, Ava and Sebastian, Silas and Sawyer, Roman and them. Conversation resumed quickly and Maddox was glad.
Nearly two hours had passed and now most of them were dancing as a slow song from James Bay played.
Maddox and Sara were dancing together as well. He had his hands on her waist and she held on to him a bit tighter than necessary.
In the midst of dancing, Maddox looked up sniffing the air as the smell of Ava's arousal hit his nostrils like a tsunami wave. He searched the backyard, his eyes landing on two figures in the shadows of the backyard. Leaving Sara in the middle of the dance floor, Maddox stalked over to Ava and Sebastian a sudden rage filling his body and igniting with every passing second.
Seeing the teens in the intimate embrace that they were, Ava pressed against a tree as Sebastian held her thighs, their lips seeking each other, Maddox's fought against the urge to tear the boy's head off.
Seeing only red, Maddox lunged towards Sebastian, knocking the boy off his feet causing them to fall to the ground. Maddox was on top, punching him with such a force he might have killed the boy if Remy didn't pull him back.
"Get out Maddox, just leave!" Tears streamed down Ava's face, as she yelled at Maddox.
Ava knelt next to her boyfriend, eyes teary as she pushed Sebastian's hair back from his bloodied face. The boy groaned, as his face began to swell and unbearable pain washed over him.
"He's not your mate Ava!" Maddox pulled out of Remy's hold, and began to walk away from the scene. "Sebastian's is not your god forsaking mate."
Maddox gently pulled Sara by the arm and hurried to leave the backyard, as Ava's family stared at him like he had lost his mind.
Once in the privacy of his car, Maddox finally let go of Sara's arm and began to pull out of the driveway.
"I'm Avadox all the freaking way." Sara girlishly giggled, despite Maddox's grumpy mood.
