Maddox had no excitement about this trip, but staying cooped up in house didn't seem like the right choice either. Parking his red mustang in the large driveway, he was met with one of the Monroe twins, Sawyer.
The fourteen year old boy looked pissed, as he sat on the front steps, his brown hair messy and a stick in his hands. Sawyer glanced at Maddox as he stepped out of the car, a small grunt escaping his lips in greeting.
Maddox gave him a nod, staring at the twin that was usually optimistic. "Who pissed you off?"
Sawyer twisted the stick in his hands, before giving his reply. "Dad's making Sebastian drive with us and Ava with you."
Maddox was pissed, but probably not for the same reason Sawyer was. It must have shown on his face because Sawyer chuckled. "It's bullcrap, right? I mean do Silas and I look like we want to spend four hours squished in the backseat with him?"
Yeah, Sawyer and Maddox were pissed off for complete different reasons. Sawyers had been explained, but Maddox kept his reason to himself. It wasn't the twins fault that Maddox was mad at Ava, or even Remy's.
Despite Maddox's own reasoning, he partially faked agreement with Sawyer. Maddox nodded. His natural response when words didn't need to be spoken.
A small smirk made its way onto Maddox's face. "I take it both of you don't like him."
Sawyer glanced up at Maddox. "He's definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. The first night he was here, he snuck up to Ava's room, forgetting that he's living in a house with shifters."
Maddox almost chuckled. He'd bet his life that Remy had heard the boy sneak up into Ava's room. No human could sneak around a shifter that could hear twenty times better. It was basic logic.
"Not only is he stupid, he's way too touchy with Ava. Kisses and hugs here, flirting and romantic looks there." Sawyer said, throwing the stick a few feet away.
"They are probably in love." Maddox said, his tone held an edge. He didn't want his words to be true, because Ava was his mate. Sebastian would never love Ava the way Maddox did.
Sawyer shook his head, his lips curled in repulsion. "It's disgusting, that's what it is."
Just then the other twin stepped out the house, a gym bag across his chest. "What's disgusting?
Remy and Genevieve had adopted the boys almost fifteen years ago. Identical alpha werewolf twins, horrifyingly abandoned on the couples doorstep with no indication of their biological parents.
The only way to identify the twins from each other was their personality. Sawyer was optimistic, honest and had a very high IQ. He was the twin you went to, when you needed a little hope for your shitty situation.
Silas wasn't too different from his brother, but enough to tell them apart. Silas was honest too, occasionally blunt and unintentionally rude, but he had a big heart.
It was almost funny how Sawyer was more like their mother and Silas more like their father.
"Ava and Sebastian's relationship." Sawyer replied to his brother's question.
Silas nodded his head, grunting almost like his brother had. "I'm surprised dad hasn't kicked him out yet. I would have the second he stuck his slimy tongue down my daughter's throat."
This time Maddox chuckled. Remy's family was great, but the twins were like the icing on the cake.
"Anyways dad said were leaving in five."Â Silas informed them, after throwing his gym bag in the bag of the SUV, followed by him getting in the backseat.
Sawyer followed his brother's actions, leaving Maddox alone who also slipped back into his own car as he waited for the rest of the family emerge from the large family home.
Not too much later were Ava and Maddox seated in his car and headed for the vacation home, silence filling the car.
Maddox could feel Ava's eyes on him and it was the first time they were alone since he had been back.
"Just ask?" Maddox glanced at her, before returning his attention to the road.
"Why did you leave?" Ava asked quietly, her curiousness and hurt flooding Maddox's senses. "Is it something I did? I never meant to drive you away."
Maddox was silent and every one of her words weren't meant to anger him, but they did.
"I loved you Maddox and you just left me. I was worried about you, about us. I was sure I would die of a broken heart. It took me years to get over our ... friendship. And I'm glad you are back, I honestly am, but why now? I ... you are making me feel things, that I tried so hard to forget. I don't know what to do."
Ava had always been open about her feelings, baring them to the world and now to Maddox. Just like Maddox never wanted to hurt her back then, he didn't want to do it now, nor ever, yet he abruptly pulled the car over and glared at his mate.
"You don't get to put the fucking blame on me! I never wanted to leave, but I thought I was making the right choice for us. I was scared and my options weren't looking good, so I did what I had to do."
Maddox was angry, his teeth bared and claws extended. He was furious with Ava, but he would never intentionally harm her.
"Why didn't you tell me? I could have helped Maddox!"Â Ava struggled to keep the tears at bay, but they wouldn't have an effect on Maddox, not like when they were younger.
"Fucking hell Ava, not everything is about you! You weren't the only one hurt, scared, confused. I felt all those emotions too. I had to leave. I didn't know anyone. I was alone for five fucking years. I had my heart broken. Don't you dare blame this on me!"
Ava was silent knowing Maddox had the right to be angry, but his next words were ones that truly stabbed at her heart.
"I came back because I am the rightful Alpha. I didn't come back for you and don't you dare cry because you have Sebastian so be happy and hopefully he's your mate."Â Maddox's face went from angry to emotionless, as he started the car again and resumed their journey to the vacation home.
The rest of the ride was dead silent and Maddox was glad when he pulled up at the expensive cabin. Obviously Ava had been happy too, because she had practically jumped out the car before he had even parked.
This trip was going to end in a disaster and Maddox didn't know who would end up heartbroken?
Maybe all three of us, if everything goes according to the devil's plan. Maddox thought bitterly, before getting out his car.
...
It was hours after everybody had arrived and the sight was comical, something that needed to be photographed and hung up on the wall of protective males.
Remy sat in the first camping chair, his arms crossed and his long legs stretched out. Next to him was Maddox in his own camping chair, a beer in his hand as he stared straight ahead. To his right were Silas and Sawyer, seated in their own chairs, arms crossed mirroring their father. Threatening looks an all of their faces as they stared at the sight before them.
Splashing in the clear water were Ava and Sebastian. The human boy had the girl over his shoulder as she squealed for him to let her go.
The boys weren't too close to the scene, but they didn't need to be -great sight and everything.
"You're right it is disgusting." Silas grumbled, making his twin chuckle.
....
"Baby, can you grab the soap out of the blue bag?" Remy pulled back the curtain shower, as he called for his mate.
Seconds later Genevieve walked into the bathroom, handing Remy the soap, before leaning against the sink.
"Remy?" She asked quietly.
Remy pulled back the shower curtain completely, and glanced at Genevieve with concern. "What's wrong, babe?"
"I'm okay ... but don't you think it's crazy that Ava and Max aren't mates?" Genevieve questioned
Relief washed over Remy, before he pulled the curtain close again and resumed shampooing his hair. "The only crazy thing about that situation it that Maddox hasn't confessed to being her mate."
_______
Remy knows, & he seems so careless about it that I had to chuckle XD
I think I'm liking this story better than the first book ... Is that weird?
I love the twins ;)
Yes, the chapters are short. I'm aware, but honestly if I make them lengthier it will be bullshit and distract from the story ...
Weird Fact about myself: I always observe the behavior of others. For example, you could be talking to me and instead of giving you my full attention, I would watch your body behavior like it's my favorite TV show. I've "studied" all my family members and I can tell when they're lying etc.
