Chapter 15

15

Injured (Hinata x Kageyama)

Hinata knew he did.

He tried not to acknowledge it or reveal it to everyone else (although they probably all knew by now).

And Kageyana told him he loved him, and Hinata knew he felt the same. So why didn't he just... say it? Instead he waited long enough for a drunk driver to come out of nowhere and almost kill him.

They had kissed. Hinata had liked it because it felt... right. So why won't he just get on with it? What was stopping him?

He was so troubled that he might even think that he's the one with fears and...

"PDST? Or PSTD?" Hinata mumbled to himself.

"Actually, PTSD," the nurse said as she walked into the room. "You seem very conflicted, what's up?"

"Yeah, I guess-" he stopped as he noticed someone else enter the room. "Yamaguchi?"

Yamaguchi, as nervous as he was all the time, stuttered. "Uh h-hi, hello, I h-hope I'm not interrupting anything, or something, important?"

"Not really, is something wrong?" Hinata asked. He noticed that the pinch server seemed a lot more tense than usual.

"Well no- I mean its possibly... okay yes."

"What is it?"

"It's obviously none of my business, but I think you should... do something about you and Kageyama-kun," Yamaguchi answered. "It seems like he's slowly pursuing something but you're kinda uncertain I guess. If you like him, you should tell him. If you don't want anything to continue, tell him too. I think he deserves to know at this point. I'm kinda here on behalf of the team too. We didn't want to all approach you but we've been seeing this just happen, and we kinda just figured..."

"I understand what you mean, and I have been thinking about it- a lot," the shorter boy responded. "And I'm just so confused, no matter how much I think about it. I like him, I do, but I'm also too scared to do anything. So maybe it's just not right? Maybe it's telling me something."

"Is it fear of rejection? Or the end of relationships?" the nurse asked with a gentle tone.

"No, I don't think so," Hinata I mean, he confessed to me so that's that. I- I- I just don't know."

"Then it's your choice, Hinata. It's always your decision, and don't ever think otherwise."

"Other people might be disappointed, but you shouldn't feel ashamed because it's always your feelings and not theirs." Yamaguchi added.

Hinata nodded. He felt so much better now with their comfort and words.

"That's very wise and mature of you, Yamaguchi." The nurse said smiling. Yamaguchi blushed at the compliment but his expression turned solemn.

"It's just... personal experience." Tears started to fill his eyes. "Tsukki, great guy and all but-"

"No, not really," Hinata mumbled quietly. "Sorry, you were saying?"

"He might seem like an arse to everyone, but I know who he truly is on the inside. Soft, determined, insecure. Sure, he doesn't look that way at all and you probably wouldn't believe me. But after all I've been through with him, it really has been something."

"Yamaguchi..."

"He was my best friend since a young age, that you guys all know. But most of you guys don't know that I had a crush on him since then."

"You did!?" Hinata exclaimed. It was very easy to tell how oblivious the boy was.

"I loved him, so much," Yamaguchi said with a sad smile. "I felt as though I would go crazy, how much I invested into him. There's a lot to it... but after all of it, we decided to just stay friends."

"Well, if you ever need someone to talk to, we're willing to listen and-"

And at that Yamaguchi burst into tears. He wasn't pathetically sobbing but he was surprisingly quiet as he cried. As the tears poured, he offered a sad smile.

"It w-was my fault... all my fault..."

Hinata wanted to move to comfort his teammate, but he couldn't. He was reminded of how he was still recovering and his leg couldn't move.

"Yamaguchi I-"

"We tried it out, us t-together, but it didn't work out," Yamaguchi interrupted, his voice shaking. "I was just so clueless on what to do in a relationship, and I was just blinded with how much I loved him and I think I was just too desperate so he ended things with me."

The nurse pulled him into a hug. "It's okay... it's okay..."

"Tsukki really tried," His tears kept on flooding uncontrollably. "Every time I messed up he forgave me, and he kept forgiving me because I kept messing up. He was the mature one so he decided that staying friends and forgetting all about it was probably the best decision."

"I'm sorry, I didn't know. I dont think any of us had any idea."

"I had an idea," the three turned towards door as another figure entered the room. "Sorry I... overheard what you said Yamaguchi, I was coming to check on Hinata. I'm not Sherlock Holmes but I kinda put two and two together. I thought you just liked each other at first, but then I realized there was probably more to it."

"Sugawara-san?"

"I apologize again, for interrupting," the setter said, as he wrapped his arm around Yamaguchi as well. "But I just really wanted you to know that we're here for you."

"T-thank you." Yamaguchi wiped his tears and smiled again. But this was was a genuinely happy one. He was happy to be surrounded by people that cared about him. He was happy to feel loved.

Suddenly Hinata realized their eyes were on him, and he felt different. He wasn't sure how or why until he looked down at himself. He had subconsciously stood up. His legs were working? Or were they always working and it was just that he-

His thoughts were interrupted as the others immediately started talking and yelling.

"Hinata!"

"You're legs!"

"I need to get Ao- I mean, Dr. Sukodu!"

"How are you feeling?" Daichi asked, offering Kageyama a cup of water. The younger boy seemed exhausted and his eyelids were drooping. He had just come out of a talk with therapist that was recommended by Dr. Sukodu.

"Like I normally feel," Kageyama said in a hushed tone. "It's not really any different, because it's been like this ever since... you know. Just a little tired."

"Being tired might be because of all the stress," the captain said thoughtfully. "You should rest, you've had a long day."

"Thoughts, just keep coming to me. I'm so worried and confused, and I'm not used to feeling like this."

"Yeah, well Kageyama, you know..."

"Yes?"

"I would say that we're here for you but I understand if you would prefer to talk to someone you trust more or-" Daichi

"I..."

"Hm?"

"I trust you guys more than anything." It seemed to come out effortlessly from him, and it truly touched Daichi.

When he first started as captain he always seemed like a leader, but he was always scared, deep down, that they were just a few guys who played volleyball. Just a team on court. But as Kageyama said those words, Daichi felt comforted. They were a team, that trusted each other on and off the court.

Ever since Hinata had first started going to the hospital, Daichi realized how much everyone meant to him. But that also reminded him how close their game  was, and how unprepared their team was.

"I've been thinking, Kageyama," he said seriously. "About our next game."

"I have too," Kageyama said, surprising him. "We really should get back to practicing. Who's replacing Hinata?"

"I still don't know-"

"Daichi! Kageyama!" a voice called. Suga was walking slowly towards them... with Hinata walking next to him?

Both of them stood up in shock as they watched Hinata taking a step at a time towards them. The doctor and Yamaguchi followed them slowly from behind, watching with pride.

"He'll be okay?" Daichi asked, and the doctor nodded.

"He needs to rest for at least a week, but also practice walking. He can go home now if he wants. I'd advise not playing at your next game though. He's not ready to run and jump around at least for another few weeks."

"Our next game is next week."

"And Hinata better not be practicing." The doctor warned.

"Understood, thank you so much, doctor," Daichi said reaching his hand out. Dr. Sukodu smiled and shook it.

"Make sure he doesn't overuse his legs. I'll leave you guys alone for a while."

"Yeah, and Daichi, I have something to tell you, and... Yamaguchi let's talk somewhere private?" Suga gave him a look and Daichi nodded and they walked away, leaving Hinata and Kageyama alone together.

As soon as Hinata confirmed that the others were out of earshot he sighed and looked up at his setter. What he was going to say, scared himself, and he wasn't sure if he had the confidence. But he reminded himself that if he didn't say it he was only being greedy.

"Kageyama-kun, I just want to be straightforward, because I haven't been for the last while."

"Uh, alright?" Kageyama replied, unsure what he was going to say

"I don't think we should be together. For the sake of volleyball, and everything."

"And everything?" Was he being rejected? "How come?"

"We can't be together, you should know that, all the complications, it's not possible."

"But," Kageyama's voice cracked. "I lo- like you."

(#KageyamaNeedsAHugToo)

Hinata took a deep breath and tried to use his most bitter voice he could muster. "Well, I'm sorry, but I don't feel the same anymore."
