Chapter Eight: Mother's House
Her Shifter Bodyguard (Shifter World Novella - Book One) (SERIES OF 13 SHORT STORIES)
âHello?â
âAh, fuck,â Dustin grumbled when he recognized his brotherâs voice.
âYou didnât lock the front door?â Shar asked, staring at him.
Dustin grunted, âI locked it. All my brothers have a key.â
âShit,â Sharissa cursed and closed her eyes when she heard footsteps in the hall. âThe bathroom door,â she whispered.
âDamn it,â Dustin grumbled as he moved to block her breasts from anyone who came to the door.
âThere you areâ¦.â Dylan stopped at the bathroom doorâhis eyes open wide. âWhat the hell?â
âCan you give us about thirteen more minutes?â Dustin asked.
Dustin watched his brother, who was staring at his mateâs naked shoulders and legs. His cougar growled, and his body twitched.
âStop looking at Shar like that; youâre irritating my cougar.â
âSorry,â Dylan said, turning away. âSo, the knotting is real, huh?â
âYeah,â Dustin grumbled, not wanting to talk about this while he was knotted inside Shar.
âDoes it hurt?â Dylan asked.
âHell, man,â Dustin growled.
He knows his brother is just curiousâsince Dustin is the first to find his Fated mate in a long time. But still, this was not the time!
âNot really,â Sharissa answered.
Dustin groaned. âReally? She answered him?â
âHuh,â Dylan said, looking as though he had no intention of leaving.
âDylan, I swear to the Goddesses, if you donât get the fuck out of here, my cougar will rip your head off and shove it up your ass, then eat your guts for dinner!â
Sharissa stared at him with wide eyes.
Dylan laughed, knowing his brother would do nothing of the sortâbut moved away from the bathroom, anyway.
âAnd close the door!â Dustin shouted.
Averting his eyes, Dylan reached in and pulled the door shut.
Dustin could hear his brother laughing as he walked down the hall toward the living room. Then he heard talking and knew heâd dialed their brothers to tell them what heâd just walked in on.
âHow much longer?â Sharissa whispered.
Dustin looked at his watch. âEight minutes.â
Shar sighed as she laid her head on his shoulder.
~ð±~
Sharissa looked at the enormous house as they pulled into the driveway. After the embarrassing moment in the bathroom earlier, Dylan hasnât looked at her. He is more than likely afraid Dustin will follow through with his threat.
âYour mom lives hereâalone?â she asked, staring wide-eyed at the house.
Both men nodded.
âThis is our family home. Has been in the family for hundreds of years,â Dylan informed her.
âWow,â she whispered as Dustin helped her from the car.
âDoes Mom know Iâm bringing a human into the house?â Dustin asked, looking at his brother.
Dylan shook his head. âWe figured you would want to be the one to tell her, or rather, show her,â he said, motioning toward their wrists.
âAh, fuck,â Dustin cursed as he pulled Shar to a halt.
âWhatâs wrong?â Shar asked, looking at him. Something wasnât right. âDoes your mother hate humans?â
Dustin bit his lower lip. âA bunch of humans hunted our family for years.â
âOh, no,â Shar gasped. âHow horrible.â
âShe hates that we work for them,â Dylan said.
Shar shook her head. âBut Iâm family, arenât I?â
Dustin pulled her against his chest and kissed her forehead. âYes, Mafilia, youâre family.â
âThatâs right, little sister, youâre family. But Mom, wellâ¦.â
âDustin! Dylan! Youâre late!â
Shar turned to the house at the same time the brothers looked up at the porch. She sucked in a breath when she saw the woman. She was beautiful. Long black hairâwithout a single grey. Smooth skin and the brightest silver eyes. She was breathtaking. And not at all how Shar had envisioned their mother to look. She had pictured an older woman with silver hair in a bun.
Oh, God, she had forgotten that shifters live a long time and stay young for hundreds of years or something like that. If Dustin is ninety-six, how old does that make their mother? And Dustin is the second oldest.
âHey, Mom, sorry weâre late,â Dylan called out to their mother.
The womanâs eyes settled on Shar, and they turned the darkest silver as she snarled. She, honest to God, snarled at Shar.
âWhat the hell is a human doing at my house?!â their mother demanded.
Shar jumped at the tone in the womanâs voice and moved behind Dustin. Sheâs not afraid of the woman, but this is her mateâs mother.
âMom,â Dustin said.
âDonât you dare bring her into my house, do you hear me?!â their mother said, then turned and stormed back into the house.
âMaybe we should have told her first,â Dylan said, looking from the door to Shar.
âYou think?â Dustin grumbled as he turned to Shar. âDonât be afraidâweâll protect you.â
Shar shook her head. âIâm not afraid of her. Itâs the fact that sheâs your mother,â she whispered.
Dustin and Dylan chuckled.
Dylan nodded, âthatâs good. She thinks you fear her and wonât dare come inside. Letâs show herâ¦.â
âAre you sure about this?â Shar asked, looking between the two men.
âCome on,â Dustin said, pulling her toward the house.
Daryl met them at the door and smiled at Shar. âHello, Seliana.â
Shar smiled up at the tall, handsome man, who was her new brother. God, all her brothers, are so freaking hot.
âHello, Beliono.â
Daryl looked at his brothers. âMother is angry. Maybe we should have told her before we brought Shar here.â
âYou think?â Dustin and Dylan said at the same time.
âShe said that the human is afraid of her,â Daryl said with a smile. âBut you donât look scared.â
Shar shook her head. âNo, Iâm not afraid of her. Just donât want to fight with my mateâs mother.â
âYou took a human as a mate!?â
The four turned to find Mrs. Kraftman standing twenty feet from them.
âAh, Mom,â Dustin said as they entered the house.
âGet her out of my house!â
âMomâ¦,â Daryl said, but the woman interrupted him.
âYou, out of everyone, should have known better, Daryl Kraftman.â
Daryl sighed, âMom, hear them outâ¦.â
âI donât want to know how my son met the slut. I want her out of myâ¦.â
âMrs. Kraftman. My name is Sharissa Flemmings, and it is so nice to meet you. I canât wait to get to know the woman who brought my mate into the world,â Shar said, holding her hand out to the shifter woman.
Shar had practiced that speech for days, and it surprised her that she said it without a mishap.
âNot good,â Dylan murmured behind her.
Mrs. Kraftmanâs face turned purple as anger simmered inside herâready to explode.
âWhat had I done wrong?â Shar wondered. She knows the speech was lame, but it was from the heart.
âYou interrupted her,â Dustin whispered into her ear.
âOh,â Shar whispered. âMy sincere apologies, Mrs. Kraftman. Please, for your sonâs sake, I would like us to get alongâ¦.â
âNow, you listen here, girlie!â Mrs. Kraftman said, getting into Sharâs face.
Shar didnât step back as the woman had figured she would. She stood still and looked into the womanâs eyes. She held her ground and used her extra strength to anchor herself to the spot in case the woman tried to make her move.
Which she did. Mrs. Kraftman took hold of Sharâs arms and tried to uproot her from the house.
âI want you out ofâ¦.â The woman huffed when she couldnât move Shar. âMy,â she tried again, but Shar did not budge. âHouse.â And again, Shar did not move.
Dustin grinned at his mate, proud of how she stood her ground. He watched his mother stare at Shar, who was watching her with alert eyes, ready for anything the other woman may try.
âMom,â Dustin groaned. âIf youâll just listenâ¦.â
âWhat is going on?!â his mother demanded. âWho the hell is she?â
âAs I said. My name is Sharissa Flemmings.â Shar smiled as she held her hand up to his mother. âYour sonâs mate.â
Dustin saw the look on his motherâs face when she finally looked at Sharâs hand and saw the markings for the first time.
âMay the Goddesses bless us all,â his mother breathed as she looked into Sharâs eyes. âA human... Oh, for fuckâs sake, fate has a nasty sense of humor,â she said, then pulled Sharissa into a hug.
The three brothers smiled at each other.
âThe stories are true then, about human mates?â their mother asked, looking at her sons.
Dustin nodded, âyes, maâam.â
âLet me see yours,â his mother said as she pulled back from Sharissa and motioned for him to come forward.
Dustin smiled as he stepped forward and held his hand out to his mother. She took it in her hands and examined it.
âThe other one,â she said, pointing to his other wrist.
Dustin gave his mother his other wrist, and she examined both of his wrists.
âUnity,â she whispered.
âIt was a shock to us all,â Daryl said, watching his mother examine his brotherâs wrists.
Their mother looked up at him and gave him her evil eye. âYou all knew about this? And didnât tell me?â
Daryl shrugged. âIt wasnât ours to tell, Mom. And we thought it would be better to show youâ¦.â
âCould have saved us all this bullshit,â she said, looking at Sharissa. âI am sorry, young lady. I do not take kindly to humans.â
Sharissa nodded and said, âitâs okay, Mrs. Kraftman.â
âCall me, Amirah. Youâre family now.â
Shar smiled, âyes, maâam.â
Amirah sighed. âCome on. Dinner is getting cold,â she said as she threw her arm over Sharâs shoulders and led her toward the kitchen. âSo, how did you meet my son?â
Shar turned her head and smiled at her mate. âI went to their security company to hire a bodyguard and found a mate.â
Amirah chuckled. âWhy do you need a bodyguard? Or should I say, why did youâyouâre almost as strong as my boys.â
Shar sighed, debating whether she should tell her anything about her ex.
âHer ex is stalking her,â Daryl said.
Shar looked at Daryl. Thatâs a pleasant way to put it.
Amirah shook her head, âoh, dear. Who is this ex?â
âJohnny Vega,â Dustin said.
Amirah snorted, âI canât stand that man.â
Shar nodded, âI wish Iâd known then what I know now. But I was young and stupid.â
âWell, you donât have to worry now that you have my boys to protect you.â
Shar nodded. Amirah Kraftman is a pleasant woman once you get past her hatred of humans.
âMom, are we good?â Dustin asked, moving to walk beside his mother.
Amirah nodded and stated, ânow that I know sheâs not after your money and sheâs your Fated mate, everything is fine.â
âShe refuses to quit her job,â Dylan laughed. âShe said she doesnât care how rich Dustin is. She needs to work, or sheâll go insane.â
Amirah grinned at Shar, âthatâs the kind of woman I always hoped for, for my boys.â
âMust have been hard raising five boys on your own,â Shar whispered.
Amirah looked at Dustin, then at Shar. âI see my son has given you our history.â
Shar nodded.
âDid he also tell you that their father ran away with a human?â
Sharâs eyes opened wide as she shook her head.
Amirah sighed, âwasnât even a woman.â
âI⦠uhâ¦.â Shar didnât know what to say to that.
âDonât worry; I got over it a long time ago. But humans still arenât my favorite species. I even prefer vampires to humans.â
âV-Vampires are real?â Shar asked, her eyes open wide in shock and disbelief.
Amirah looked at her son. âYou havenât told her about vampires?â
Dustin shrugged. âWe discussed werewolvesâwe just havenât gotten to vampires yet.â
Shar felt faint. Sheâs known most of her life that shifters are real. And now, she has found out about werewolves and vampires. What else is real? The Loch Ness Monster?
âJust in case youâre wondering, Nessie isnât real,â Dylan laughed.
Shar stared at him with wide eyes.
âAh fuck, you were seriously wondering about that, werenât you?â Dylan asked, trying not to laugh again.
Shar pouted and lamented, âthis is a lot to take inâdickweed.â
The room got quiet, then everyone, including their mother, burst into laughter.
âSheâs a keeper,â Amirah said as she kissed her second eldest on the cheek and walked into the kitchen.
âDonât I know it,â Dustin said with a grin as he pulled Shar into his arms.
She smiled up at him. âI guess weâre both lucky.â
âI guess so,â he said with a grin as he kissed her.
âGod, not here too,â Dylan said with a roll of his eyes.
Dustin growled as he turned and glared at his brother.
âDonât make me tell Mom what I saw in the bathroom,â Dylan said, winking at Shar.
Sharâs cheeks turned a bright red, and Dustin went after his brother, who took off into the kitchen where their mother would hopefully protect him.
âNot in my kitchen!â Amirah shouted.
Shar laughed as she watched Amirah chase her boys out of her kitchen with a broom. For the first time since she was little, she felt like she belonged somewhere.
Like she was home.
