Chapter Five: Moving On & Up
Her Shifter Bodyguard (Shifter World Novella - Book One) (SERIES OF 13 SHORT STORIES)
Dustin smiled at his mate. She was right. If she joined him in the shower, heâd fuck her, and they would have to wait thirty minutes for his knot to soften. So, he kissed her forehead, then headed to her shower. When he finished, he found her in her room with a medical kit ready to doctor him. He smiled at the thought of her playing doctor.
âSit,â she said, pointing to the only chair in her room.
He obeyed and sat down. Shar knelt before him and scowled at the cut in his side.
âItâs already healing,â she said as she pulled peroxide from the kit.
âYeah, we heal fast,â he said, looking into her eyes.
âDo you think I will, too, now that weâre connected?â she asked, concentrating on his wound.
He shrugged, âI donât know, Mafilia. Weâre learning as we go here.â
She smiled up at him. âAre there books we can read?â
âMy mom might have some.â
She nodded and looked back down at his cut. âThen, weâre going to the family dinner.â She poured the peroxide on the wound.
He roared as he grabbed the arms of the chair and squeezed.
âWhat the fuck!?â Daryl bellowed as he entered the room.
âHi,â Shar said with a smile as she looked at her new brother.
Daryl looked from Shar to his brother and back again. He looked at the cut in his brotherâs stomach and the bottle of peroxide in Sharissaâs hand and grinned.
âHas having a mate softened you, Brother?â
Dustin snarled at his brother, and Shar clucked her tongue.
âDid you not see the bodies in the living room?â she asked as she recapped the peroxide.
Daryl stopped laughing and nodded.
âThen you know your brother is no pussy,â she said as she stood up and smiled at her mate.
Dustin pulled Shar closer and wrapped his arms around her waist. Heâs already falling for this woman. Itâs like a train wreck, and he canât stop it. It will happen whether Dustin wants it to or not, and man, does he want it to. To love your Fated mate is the best feeling in the world. Next to fucking her, of course.

âLook at this mess,â Dylan said as he entered Sharâs apartment.
âHey, Dylan,â Shar said with a smile when she saw him. âCan you help Dominic with the bodies?â
Dylan stared at Shar. âWhere are Dustin and Daryl?â
âThey went to get a friend of theirs. I think they said something about his father being a copâ¦.â
Dylan nodded and responded, âRaj.â
âYeah, thatâs him.â Shar pulled another box off the table and opened it.
âWhat are you doing?â he asked, watching her.
She smiled and answered, âpacking. We would have done it later, but now, with my door broken, I donât want to leave my apartment unattended.â
Dylan nodded. âNeed help?â he asked.
âOnce you boys finish with the bodies, I could use a lot of help.â
âThanks for volunteering me there, Shar,â Dominic said as he lifted a boar over his shoulder.
She smiled at him. âYouâre most welcome, Dom.â
Dominic chuckled as he walked out the door.
âI see he has accepted you,â Dylan said with a smile.
âHow so?â she asked, watching him.
He turned back to her. âHe told you to call him Dom, right?â
She nodded.
âHe only allows those closest to him to call him by his nickname.â
She smiled and said, âwell, Iâm glad you all accept me. Because this shit has been crazy, you know?â
He noddedâhe knew. âWell, Iâll get to helping my brother so we can help you.â
She smiled and replied, âthanks, Dylan.â
âNo worries, Seliana.â
Shar watched the guys carry the bodies from her apartment. She didnât know where they were putting them, and she didnât care as long as they were away from here.
âAll done,â Dylan said as he and Dominic returned to her apartment.
She wrinkled her nose at the smell. âGo wash some of that smell off you first,â she said, almost gagging.
The two men looked at each other, then at her.
âSo, itâs true then?â Dylan asked.
âWhat?â Shar asked, her nose still wrinkled.
âThat a human mate gets her mateâs abilities,â Dominic said, watching her.
âOh. Yeah, itâs true. Please wash up.â
Both men chuckled as they headed to the kitchen to wash their hands and arms.
âAnd burn your shirts!â she hollered at them.
Dominic snorted as he pulled his shirt over his head.
Shar shook her head. Two women are out there waiting for those two, and theyâll be lucky to have them. Theyâre just as muscled and good-looking as their older brothers.
âWhatâs going on here? Why are my brothers half-naked?â Dustin demanded when he entered her apartment.
âWell, hello to you too,â she said, turning to him. âI told them to burn their shirts.â
âWhy?â Dustin asked, watching his brothers.
âBecause they removed those nasty ass boars out of here, and I do not want to smell their stench anymore. I think Iâll burn the carpet, too,â Shar said, looking at the blood on her carpet.
Daryl laughed as he slapped his brother on the shoulder. âShe has a point.â He nodded to his new sister. âThey do have a stench, and itâs worse in death.â
He has never seen Dustin so jealous of his brothers before. This Fated mate thing was fascinating if it turned his wayward brother into a one-womanâtear your head offâtype of man.
âThatâs an understatement,â Shar said. She was having a hard time not throwing up.
âIâll wash the carpet,â Dylan said as he grabbed what he needed from under the sink.
âI forgot our bond amplified your senses,â Dustin said with a smile as he pulled her into his arms.
She smiled up at him. âTenfold. I didnât know my belongings had a distinct smell for each object.â
Dustin chuckled, âevery person, too.â
âOh, God,â she said, gagging.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked, looking down at her.
She chuckled as she got her gag reflex under control. âThereâs this guy at work who stinks to high heavens all the time. And nowâ¦.â
Dustin chuckled, ânow, heâll smell even worse.â
She nodded and jested, âthanks a lot.â She smiled so he knew she was teasing.
Dustin knew, and he kissed her for it.
âOkay, the carpet is clean. Shall we get to packing?â Dylan cheerfully asked.
âYouâre too chipper,â Dustin growled.
Dylan grinned and said, âitâs not every day one of your brothers finds his Fated mate.â
~ð±~
It took them all day and into the night to pack Sharâs apartment and move it to Dustinâs mansion. Luckily, he had an enormous garage, and she stored most of her belongings there to go through later.
âYou just need clothes and bathroom items for now,â Dustin told her as his brothers stored her boxes in his garage.
She nodded, âright.â
âShar?â
âHmm?â she asked, turning to him.
âAre you okay?â
She nodded. âYepâno,â she admitted with a deep sigh.
He moved over to her and pulled her into his arms. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI should have never gotten involved with Johnny Vega. But I swear, I didnât know who he was.â
Dustin sighed. âI know, Mafilia, I know.â
âWhat do we do now?â
âNow, we live our lives. Iâm here to protect you, and you have the rest of my family. Youâll never be alone again.â
She smiled up at him. âI like that thought.â
âOf being protected?â
âOf not being alone.â
He nodded and kissed her.
âWhoa,â someone said as they entered the living room.
Dustin grumbled as he lifted his head and looked at the intruder.
âSorry, man,â the man laughed.
Shar looked at the newcomer and noticed his silver eyes. Shifter.
âArenât you going to introduce us?â he asked, wide-eyed.
Dustin grumbled, âShar, this is Raj Cunningham, a close friend of mine and my brothers.â
âThe copâs son,â Shar said, nodding to the man.
âOuch,â Raj said, placing his hand over his chest.
Dustin chuckled. He knows his friend is used to people recognizing him. He hasnât been called the copâs sonâin over twenty years. Not since he found his passion on the ice.
âAm I wrong?â Shar asked, looking at Dustin.
Dustin grinned at his mate and kissed her. âRaj here is used to being recognized.â
She looked between the two men. âIâm sorry. Are you famous?â
âOh, double shot to the heart!â Raj cried out as he flopped onto the couch as if sheâd shot him.
âHe can be dramatic,â Dustin whispered to her.
She chuckled. âIâm sorry, Raj. Where should I know you from?â
He eyed her. âDo you watch sports?â
She shook her head, âno, sorry, Iâm not a sports fan.â
Raj laughed, âit figures youâd find one who hates sports as much as you do.â
Dustin chuckled and replied, âyou know I only watch to watch you get your ass kicked.â
Raj snorted, âI give more than I take, and you know it.â
âWhat are you two talking about?â Shar asked, confused.
âIs he a fighter or something?â
âRaj is a professional hockey player,â Dustin said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
Shar nodded, âoh.â
âThat all? Just an, oh?â Raj asked, watching her.
She smiled at him. âI would love to see you play.â
He grinned at her, âmaybe your boyfriend will bring you to the next home game.â
Shar looked at Dustin. âDo you think itâs safe to go?â
Dustin smiled and said, âI think so. Enormous crowd, donât think Vega will want so many witnesses.â
She nodded. âCan we go?â
He nodded and answered, âbut only if you promise to stay with me and do as I say.â
She nodded again. âI promise.â
âGreat,â Raj said as he got to his feet. âOh, I almost forgot. My dad wants to see you.â
âWhere is he?â Dustin asked.
âOut in his car, waiting for you.â
Dustin looked at Shar, and she smiled. She loved how he worried about her, and she knew it wasnât because he was her paid bodyguard. It was because he cared about what happened to her.
Raj smiled at Dustin, âgo, Iâve got your girl covered.â
Dustin nodded, then quickly kissed Shar and walked out the door.
Raj moved closer to Sharissa. âLet me see,â he said, holding his hands out.
Shar eyed him, confused about what he wanted.
âYour markings,â he said.
âOh.â She blushed as she held her hands out to him.
He took hold of her wrists and looked at them. âIncredible,â he mumbled. âIâve never seen a bonding before. Is it true?â he asked, looking up at her.
âWhat?â
He smiled. âThat you gain your mateâs abilities?â
She smiled back, âso far, two senses and strength.â
He nodded. âWhich senses?â
âHearing and sense of smell.â
âHowâs the sex?â
She choked and pulled her hands from his.
He chuckled, âsorry to be so blunt. But I heard itâs intenseâespecially the knotting.â
She tried to speak, but nothing would come out.
âWhat the fuck did you do to my mate?â Dustin demanded when he returned to find Shar sputteringâher eyes open wide.
Raj shrugged and said, âI asked her what knotting is like.â Raj ducked Dustinâs fist and laughed as he escaped the man. âIâm just curious because of the stories, you know, how sex is a hundred times better.â
âGo find your own Fated mates and find out for yourself,â Dustin growled.
Raj laughed, âcatch you at my next home game. Got to go; Dadâs waiting on me.â He dodged Dustinâs fist again and laughed as he ran to his fatherâs car.
âSorry about that,â Dustan said, turning to Shar.
Shar smiled at him. âItâs okayâheâs just curious. I was just shocked at his bluntness.â
He chuckled, âyeah, Raj has always been blunt.â
âWhat does he shift into?â Sharissa asked as she watched Dustin walk over to her.
âA tiger.â
She blinked. âReally?â
He nodded and replied, âyeah.â
âI would love to see that,â she said with a smile.
He growled as he pulled her into his arms. âYou would, would you?â
She nodded. âI would love to see others. I have always found shifters fascinating.â
He chuckled, âweâll go to The Shifter Dive this Friday.â
Her eyes opened wide. âIsnât that the shifter barâwhere only shifters hang out?â
Dustin nodded, âand their mates. Though youâll be the first Fated mate.â He smiled. âBut donât worry, theyâll be happy to see you. Youâre one of us now, Sharissa.â
Sharissa smiled. She has never been so proud to be a part of something before.
